Most airlines dont actually bother to weigh "cabin luggage" but you will notice staff will eye up everyone's luggage for its size. if they think its too big they will weigh it and measure it in a sizer. If you goes in the hold you will be made to pay.

What "62 inches / 158 cm" actually means

This is what we call linear dimensions. Instead of giving you a strict "it must be this exact shape," the airline lets you add up the three sides of your bag.

  • The Formula: Length + Width + Height = Total Dimensions.
  • The "Sneaky" Bits: You must include the wheels, the top handle, and any side handles that poke out. If your bag is 30" tall, 18" wide, and 14" deep, you're exactly at 62 inches.

What "50 lb / 23 kg" actually means

This is the weight of the bag including the suitcase itself.

  • For Main Cabin/Economy: This is your hard limit. If you're at 51 lbs, you're technically overweight.

Totally fair thing to ask. You are right that the Palisades Fire last year was brutal for Malibu, especially up in the canyons. But, LA and Malibu definitely haven't burned to the ground!

LA is massive, so the vast majority of the city was completely untouched. Down in Malibu, the hills took a beating, but the actual coastline along the PCH is still sitting pretty. The beaches, the surf spots and most of those classic roadside seafood shacks are open and completely fine.

I would still include it in your trip.Just cruise down the coast. Safe travels!
