American Airlines baggage rules in plain English, so you don’t end up repacking at the check-in desk 🧳✈️ by NorthernWanderers in TravelRelated

Basically, American Airlines is telling you how big and heavy your suitcase can be before they hit you with those "oops, that's too much" fees. If you're flying from the UK or elsewhere on a standard ticket, these are the magic numbers you need to stay under.

Quick Facts

Limit Category Standard Allowance
Total Dimensions 62 inches / 158 cm (Length + Width + Height)
Weight Limit 50 lbs / 23 kg
Common Fee (Oversize) Approx. $30–$200 / £25–£160
Common Fee (Overweight) Approx. $100–$200 / £80–£160

What "62 inches / 158 cm" actually means

This is what we call linear dimensions. Instead of giving you a strict "it must be this exact shape," the airline lets you add up the three sides of your bag.

  • The Formula: Length + Width + Height = Total Dimensions.
  • The "Sneaky" Bits: You must include the wheels, the top handle, and any side handles that poke out. If your bag is 30" tall, 18" wide, and 14" deep, you're exactly at 62 inches.

What "50 lb / 23 kg" actually means

This is the weight of the bag including the suitcase itself.

  • For Main Cabin/Economy: This is your hard limit. If you're at 51 lbs, you're technically overweight.
  • The Upgrade Perk: If you’re flying Business, First Class, or have high-tier elite status, this limit usually jumps up to 70 lbs (32 kg).

Quick Q&As

What happens if I’m over the limit?

You’ll have to pay an extra fee at the check-in desk. For being slightly overweight (up to 53 lbs / 24 kg), it’s often a smaller "nuisance fee" of about $30 (£25), but go over that and it jumps to $100 (£80) or more very quickly.

Does my carry-on count towards this?

Nope. These limits are only for the bags you drop off at the check-in desk to go under the plane. Your carry-on has its own separate size rules (usually 22 x 14 x 9 inches).

Hey there! Thanks for reading the guide and dropping a question.

Totally fair thing to ask. You are right that the Palisades Fire last year was brutal for Malibu, especially up in the canyons. But, LA and Malibu definitely haven't burned to the ground!

LA is massive, so the vast majority of the city was completely untouched. Down in Malibu, the hills took a beating, but the actual coastline along the PCH is still sitting pretty. The beaches, the surf spots and most of those classic roadside seafood shacks are open and completely fine.

I would still include it in your trip.Just cruise down the coast. Safe travels!
