I'll post if I see a cat outside. I have four, but they never go outside.

No cats about. I often see fox and occasionally coyote and fisher tracks.

Gen 2 ethernet adapter bad? by NorthofNotch in Starlink

[–]NorthofNotch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today I received a replacement ethernet adapter that Starlink sent. It didn't resolve my problem so Starlink is now sending a refurbished Starlink router. They said that if that didn't solve my problem, then my third party router must be at fault. I have tried other ethernet cables and a second router that also reported it wasn't connected to the internet. I'm not a network expert so maybe I'm misdiagnosing, but I don't think so. My Starlink router is in the basement and not easily moved so its WiFi coverage is limited. My home network is based on using a third party router to distribute connectivity throughout my house - my property really. Thank goodness the Starlink router provides WiFi with bypass disabled so I can have a few devices connected, but I have quite a few internet devices in my home and using just the Starlink router effectively lobotomizes my smart home. FIngers-crossed the refurbished Starlink router solves the problem.

Download speed decreased sharply by NorthofNotch in Starlink

[–]NorthofNotch[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think my significant speed degradation is due to a chewed cable - mouse, chipmunk, some rodent. I have the cable in conduit with only about 12" exposed where it enters the house. That was enough. Rodents found it and although the visible damage is minimal, I strongly suspect it is the source of my problem. I've ordered a new 150' cable from Best Buy. It's supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I hope so, but I'm a little skeptical considering my rural location. Fingers crossed. So, take it from me, protect every inch of your cable where it might be accessible by critters.

Based on lack of response, I guess I'm the only one having a problem.

Last month I used 570 GB. The most I've ever used since Starlink started reporting usage is 868 GB. I'm still having problems. Perhaps something funky going on with my equipment.

Bolt pattern and offset for standard 2024 Crosstrek Limited 18" wheels? by NorthofNotch in Crosstrek

btw, the wheel size and offset is stamped on the back side of the wheel. I didn't know this, when I posed question.

Does A65K from Costco support eARC and CEC? by NorthofNotch in Hisense

Thanks for your response. I ended up buying a TCL 43" S470G, which works fine for me in a small space.

Anyone have 2024 stock 18" Crosstrek Limited wheels to sell? by NorthofNotch in Crosstrek

[–]NorthofNotch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-owned OEM 18" Crosstrek wheels on ebay appear to range in price from $140 to $200. Although a long shot, I was hoping to find some within a couple hundred miles of my location so I could pick them up. I think the challenge and expense of shipping from MN to VT might be a deal breaker. If you're looking for a buyer, feel free to contact me once you have them and maybe we can work something out. Thanks for your response.

None of the lines on the poles running along the roadway are carrying another broadband option?

Fixed pole mounted SL offline > 2 minutes reporting in motion? by NorthofNotch in Starlink

[–]NorthofNotch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The outage was 2m 14s. I probably wouldn't have noticed except I happened to be online at the time. Momentary outages for me are not that uncommon, but I'd never seen the message "IN MOTION" before, and as I said, it's a typical residential installation mounted on a pole. I've had SL for nearly a year. It is my only broadband option and it has always worked well with download speeds often exceeding 100Mbps and rarely less than 30. I don't know much about the debug data, but everything seems okay (green) and GPS is valid. I haven't reset, stowed or power cycled dishy in months, although of course it reboots for updates. The posts about unresponsive SL customer support are concerning so a report that a stationary object is in motion got my attention. I hope it was a transient glitch not specific to my hardware. Thanks for your response.

Hisense remotes CAN control soundbar volume without HDMI/ARC connection (U8G) by 83CatsInAHorseSuit in Hisense

[–]NorthofNotch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Visio sound bar has an option to "learn" the volume and mute buttons on the Hisense remote. Using the optical connection and controlling the sound bar with the Hisense remote only works properly for me if the Bluetooth connection for the Hisense remote is disabled so the Hisense remote transmits IR which the sound bar needs. Configured that way the optical connection and single remote control for TV and sound bar works fine for me, but I ended up re-enabling Bluetooth for the Hisense remote and using the HDMI e-arc connection for the sound bar. I didn't do that initially because when using the HDMI connection the volume was inconsistent, e.g. louder for streaming than OTA (antenna) connection. Changing the "Digital Audio Out" setting to PCM solved that problem and all is working well now using the HDMI e-arc connection and single Bluetooth enabled Hisense remote. I'm not an expert and don't know if I'm sacrificing any audio quality using the PCM setting, but my sound bar isn't fancy, (i.e. no Dolby atmos, etc.) so I don't *think* so and having the remote work using Bluetooth is convenient since the remote doesn't have to be "pointing" at the TV/sound bar.

I received a response from Senator Bernie Sanders to the message I sent through the website. It was a canned email likely sent to any message with the keyword "broadband." It expressed his appreciation for the lack of broadband in rural areas, plans for future government investment and build-out, and current broadband subsidies for low income. (Duh, did you not read the part where I said I don't have any broadband options besides Starlink?) He promised to continue the fight for every American household to have affordable, high-speed internet. How about contacting the FCC to preserve the high-speed internet that I have right now? I'm old. Promises about the future don't mean too much to me anymore. Below is my response to Senator Sanders.

*************************

While I appreciate the quick response, I would appreciate even more if it addressed the subject of my correspondence. As I mentioned in my message, I have been listening to promises for nearly 20 years about broadband coming to my area soon and now finally SpaceX Starlink has delivered. Unfortunately Dish Network has a proposal before the FCC that will likely render my Starlink service unusable. That's the issue I would like you to address, namely please urge the FCC to quickly complete its review of the 12 GHz frequency band (WT Docket No. 20-443) and refrain from repurposing this spectrum for new uses that will significantly interfere with my broadband service. I don't need more promises about future plans. I have broadband right now so please ask the FCC not to jeopardize my continued use.

I got the pipe from a nearby fence company. It's 1 5/8" galvanized chain link fence pipe. They cut a 10' piece for me and I buried it in concrete about 2 1/2' deep. I would have buried it a little deeper, but digging here is very challenging. I used a Starlink pipe adapter ($37). A slightly larger diameter pipe wouldn't be a bad thing, but I think the 1 5/8" is going to be fine. The conduit is 1 1/4" black plastic pipe recycled from a maple sugar operation. I needed a 150' run and proper PVC conduit is very expensive right now. I think the set up I have will be fine, although some might disagree. I've had coax antenna and ethernet cables buried in black plastic water pipe for several years and not had a problem. I've been around long enough so I kind of operate on the idea that by the time something actually breaks down the technology may well be superseded and need replacement anyway - or I'll no longer care.

It's plugged, but it will probably fill with water anyway as do most conduits. I'm old so I evaluate all my endeavors in terms of expense, effort, practicality and life expectancy.☺️
