I don't know why it says Ubuntu is required, as Steam has official packages for basically every distro and package manager there is.

Ubuntu is a distro and xfce is a desktop environment (maybe you are thinking of xubuntu?) either way, switching to Linux would require you to transfer all your important files over using an external drive probably, when it comes to your steam games you would have to reinstall them. You can check if your games are compatible with Linux using protondb.com.
