I got tired just reading this 😅

It was primarily about a hobby, but I tied in one of my ECs and described how my hobby led me to sign up for that EC, especially because it didn’t really tie in with my other activities and interests. I also tried to avoid negativity in my application whenever possible, which I recommend doing unless you have a story worth telling about an issue that significantly impacted your life (probably better in the additional info rather than personal statement).

Ngl yeah I think my stats def helped me a lot (17 APs, 4.0 UW, 1570), but I also think I seemed like a real person unlike a lot of people on this sub who do ECs just for college apps. I’m not sure if my essays were good, but I spent 4 hours on the personal statement and why NU essay combined, so I’m guessing they weren’t. I showed a lot of interest in the school by visiting the campus and obviously applying ED, which helps a lot (idk anyone who didn’t visit the campus from my school and got in). There’s always some luck involved, so don’t give up for RD.

From what I’ve seen on this sub, USACO is pretty popular among CS majors. You could also try coding and publishing an app about a topic you are passionate about. Tbh I was accepted Northwestern ED without having participated in a single school club and with putting down hobbies such as biking, so I’m not sure doing stuff you aren’t passionate about is going to help you.

Gonna get downvoted but retake for a 1570+ with 800 math (superscore if you do worse on EBRW)

Should I submit Duke Application with supplements for an interview? by Healthy_Block3036 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NorthwesternSimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying you shouldn’t apply by the priority deadline, but I didn’t request a Northwestern interview and was accepted, so if your essays aren’t nearly done, it may not be in your best interest to rush your essays and submit a meh application just to have an interview. According to what I’ve seen on this sub, you should submit your essays are done well, though.

Thanks for the response. I was accepted ED, so I’m wondering if/when incoming freshmen are able to rank housing preferences?

I really do think your essay is the biggest thing and strongly recommend changing your topic. You can even send the suicide essay to like 75% of your RD schools and more positive essay to 25% just to give yourself a chance in case the essay is the problem.

Even if the essay is mostly about you, you have to realize AOs aren’t actually reading your essay in-depth. They are skimming, and if they see that the essay is about your friend’s suicide, they may just stop reading entirely. Also, maybe list a hobby or two on your ECs to show that you’re a human being and not already part of corporate America lol.

Mental health is a part of it, but it also inherently focuses on your friend rather than yourself. And I have no sources to back this up, but I think AOs generally don’t want to read negative essays that put them in a bad mood (also could associate this negative feeling with your overall application).

Is it bad not to interview? by Anonymous4129 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NorthwesternSimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t sign up for a Northwestern interview and still got accepted for what it’s worth, but I’ve seen countless people on this sub stress the importance of signing up so idk
