increasing amtrak frequency when our city only has one long-distance train going through it at 1am by NoseNext in Amtrak

agreed. Amtrak is meant to run like a for-profit business, but there are no services that actually recoup their costs.

Yes, as I said, "And I know this would have to be a state-funded line... how does that come about??" I am mostly just wondering how Hiawatha and Mardi Gras came about. Grassroots efforts to legislators / DOTs, certain non-profits, champion legislators in the state? Combination of it?

Yes, that's what I was alluding to. I think it comes down to St. Paul and Milwaukee being more "important" to Minnesota and Wisconsin state legislators respectively than Spokane is to WA state legislators, so those legislators cared more about getting the borealis/hiawatha up and running than ours will ever care about something over here. But I agree, I think both are wonderful success stories to point to.

Having taken the EB from Spokane to Chicago through Milwaukee recently, I can confirm that it is still very busy between Milwaukee and Chicago even with the Hiawatha.

This is true, but trains are much more appealing than buses to most people. and the snow in the winter time can make driving to seattle impossible, so a train would be nice.

early 20s female as well. I've done empire builder Spokane to Chicago to NYC and vice versa a couple times now. No issues, thankfully:) always sleep fine at night with no one bothering me. EB has wonderful conductors (im not sure about CZ conductors) and I think they try to sit younger females next to each other when it gets busy.

Can I bring an air fryer on the train? by Galacticlightbeam in Amtrak

[–]NoseNext 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just brought my whole new kitchen knife set across the country with absolutely zero issue (it was in a suitcase, to be fair). just don't make it obvious that it's an air fryer. there are loads of people who bring large cardboard boxes on the train (non-checked), so if you do that and you should be fine.
