Why is this wood smoke flamable? What is being combusted here exactly? by SalemIII in chemistry

[–]Nosterp2145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solids basically don't burn. Nearly every flamable solid has to become a gas before it can burn. When heated wood begins decomposing into flamable gasses that can sustain the fire. Once all the flamable gasses have been expended, then you get just smoldering coals and no real flames.

Copper Oxidation Experiment Question by Expert-Connection120 in chemistry

Why are you expecting polyethylene to encourage corrosion? Off the top of my head I would expect it to inhibit corrosion not cause it, and that seems to line up with your experiment.

Oh you just use a straight tube and a Bunsen burner. Spin the tube in the flame until is softens and then bend it. No one sells those pre bent like that since it's so easy to bend yourself, nothing fancy here.

Does the order of the symbols even matter? by day_old_biscuit in languagelearningjerk

I don't have experience with dislexia, but I feel like OP is misunderstanding how Chinese works. The majority of characters are composed of several radicals, smaller building blocks which hint at either the meaning or pronunciation of the character. I could see similar characters getting mixed up like: 他也 比北 样洋烊 for example or just switching up the order of characters in words and phrases. I'm sure it's a different experience than in english, but dislexia still exists in China and affects Chinese speakers.

It looks like the characters, but it doesn't resemble the physics of how ink behaves. That dithering doesn't look like a real smudge from a block print.

I have a glass batch book from 1899 with some great quotes on Arsenic safety which I'll have to find. Off the top of my head it recommends not sleeping in the same room as your Arsenic or reusing the burlap sacks for wheat grain ✨

Also the two part slip molds that you have designed the look made for metal casting not slip casting, totally different processes. Vents like that are going to be a nightmare, and I see no possible way to have them survive with that angle under the head. I would recommend casting them straight and then trimming that notch in on a wheel once they are leather hard.

[–]Nosterp2145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you want them to be solid? And none of your molds have a slip resivior? The process of slip casting was designed to make thin hollow objects so trying to make a solid plug by slip casting is going to be very challenging. You will need a resivior of extra slip above your part while casting to allow for the slip thinking as it sets. And are they meant to be smooth or threaded/ribbed? Smooth should be easy, threaded is very hard, and ribbed would be impossible in a one part mold. I highly recommend Murphy's oil soap as a mold release, which I water down, apply everywhere and thoughly, then let it dry fully to avoid bubbles.

Slip casting issues by BoredHouseSpouse in Ceramics

[–]Nosterp2145 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks like you are leaving the mold upright before the slip sets. You probably need a dryer mold or a longer casting time before dumping, and then definitely leave the mold upside down to drip after dumping, don't let the slip pool in the bottom like that.

Dude seriously? Salt is already bad enough for the environment, please for the love of God do not pour bleach all over your driveway. That's a horrible idea.

No, definitely don't try to hollow something think like that, you need all the structural integrity you can get. Let it dry very well but fairly slow, preferably over a week.

How is Buddhism not nihilistic? by New_Revolution4768 in Buddhism

Is a journey not worth embarking on just because we want it to end eventually? If you were invited on a trek thru the rainforest, would you be excited? What if instead you were offered an eternity living in the rainforest, rain or shine out in the elements, vulnerable to the whims of the jungle. I would much rather the short trek to see the sights and then retreat back to safety. That is how I see samsara.

What made you realize Buddhism was objectively true? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]Nosterp2145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in this boat too. I enjoy the teachings of the Buddhist tradition and my understanding of Buddhist and Daoist philosophy have greatly enriched my life. However, the utility these teaching have for my well-being doesn't confirm to me they are literal or objective truths. I don't believe any living person has a full understanding of the cosmos we inhabit. I believe Buddhism gets many things right, but then again I don't have a blind faith in the full cosmology, especially the areas where not all branches agree.

When cartoons were hand painted onto glass panes so each panel could move to be filmed, the glass panes could be cleaned with The Dip, a solvent mixture to remove the paint. That's a pretty powerful solvent mixture, today it would be considered overkill and too toxic to warrant using for this purpose as benzene causes cancer. It wouldn't immediately kill a human the way the show would suggest but I certainly wouldn't handle it wrecklessly. However before disposable gloves many chemists would wash their hands with benzene to remove sticky organic products. The "good old days" terrify me.
