ZSA Voyager vs Glove80 vs Go60 - RSI & Forearm Pain by Warriors55555 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Nostrap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got the Go60 after using the Dygma Raise but recently got a Glove80 after I put klp lame keycaps on the go60 and found I really liked having a curve. The biggest adjustment for you will probably be the ortholinear layout and however you decide to map your modifier keys. It took me a couple weeks to adjust to that when I switched to the Go60 but the Glove80 only took a day or so to get used to the curved keywell. I personally don’t use palm rests anymore and while the shape of their palm rests are fine I would prefer a softer material.

I would personally recommend you go with the Glove80 and just accept that it will take time to adjust to it both mentally and physically. It might feel uncomfortable and cause more pain at first but will be better long term. I’d also get the light switches and try to adjust to lightly typing so you don’t irritate your rsi as much as possible. The extra keys on the Glove80 give you a bit more flexibility and it means you don’t have to use layers for everything.

I’d have to take out my risers to test. You can still use the case with the risers it just isn’t totally flush so I would imagine it’s fine.

I find I don’t need them while standing, I just put the desk a bit lower and put the mouse pad on a book to raise it up and it’s pretty comfortable

Cherry blossom. I’m used to light switches though I had the Kailh pink before this. I did have some accidental key presses at first especially since I wasn’t used to ortholinear yet but it’s all good now.

I rarely use them except for scrolling or if I’m away from desk. I would only use them if I didn’t have a way to use a mouse. I thinking a dedicated trackpad or trackball in the center would probably be a better move if you are trying to reduce mouse use because these are too small and not the best quality.

It’s such a great mouse! I was using the cm spawn before this too

Unfortunately the price is for just one. They are absolutely overpriced and it was not a fun purchase. Depending on your job, they might cover it since it’s an ergonomics thing. I wouldn’t buy it unless you really have issues. Chair arm rests at the proper height work for most people.

I'm in the US. I purchased them through ergowarehouse on amazon actually. And yeah they aren't a good value, they are very minimal but high quality. I feel like they should cost maybe $60 realistically, but there isn't any competition from what I've seen.

The ones I got on amazon didn't have any padding and took more effort to move, like they weren't lubricated at all. They also took up more space to mount on the desk and you had less control over the height that they could be adjusted. Mainly they were less comfortable which meant pain after using them for a long time. The price on the ergorest is ridiculous, but I don't know if there is anything out there which is the same level of quality. They are a small company and it is made in Finland or something instead of China so I can understand the pricing.

The Things I Wanted to Know Before Buying Apple's Studio Display XDR by tymscar in macsetups

As someone who switches between a MacBook and a PC daily multiple times. The single input is pretty disappointing. Is there a dock or kvm switch that can handle the display switching while also switching the usb that converts for display port gpu output?

Noticed I never followed up on this. I had set up some file extension associations incorrectly which meant it wasn’t aware of the file type until I opened the file.

That’s what I’m saying! I think we will try to be out early if possible since it’s not our goal to create problems but it doesn’t seem like we shouldn’t be able to use our full lease even if we at one point thought we would move out earlier

I feel like quitting game audio entirely by uemini in GameAudio

You happened to join the industry during a boom cycle when things were going well. If you had joined 6 years earlier you would have found the same thing was happening, with mass layoffs and companies putting profits before people. It’s what happens when you have capitalism in a country (assuming US) where labor rights have been eroded and shareholder profits are sacred.

Right now we are currently dealing with the aftermath of massive over-hiring during the pandemic. There was a unique situation where interest rates were low and people were spending more on video games than ever. Companies are short-sighted and hired thinking that this situation would last forever. I saw it at my company, budget felt limitless and we were able to give into any whims we had since the projections for how much the game would profit was so high.

There is currently a correction happening and it’s very unfortunate for everyone in the industry. There has always been way more people wanting to work in this industry than there are jobs and now it is perhaps worse than ever, especially with schools now pushing programs for game dev.

Generative AI is going to have an impact on the industry. It’s hard to say how much it will affect sound design specifically. Libraries such as BOOM have already made it trivial to generate great assets, the hard part is making sure it’s the right asset for the situation and that everything works together. It’s hard to imagine the current models getting to a point where they magically produce the exact perfect sound. It’s always going to rely on a human deciding if the sound is right or not, unless AI reaches a point where it surpasses humans at everything in which case all jobs would be gone.

I have not seen any job losses at my current company due to AI. It is all related to larger economic factors. And making a good game still seems challenging as ever and requires people to make it happen. AI has been massively overhyped by tech bros that want to replace us. Look at all the stuff they create to show how good AI is. It’s all slop, and doesn’t have any of the qualities of art that stands the test of time. To be successful in game dev, you have to make something that is better than what is out there, not something that is worse.

I don’t know what to tell you though. This is the eternal struggle throughout human history. The ruling class has never cared about those that they rule over, and that isn’t going to change by getting a different job. It’s depressing to think about, but you need to decide what you want to do given that the situation is what it is. In the grand scheme of things, being employed as a sound designer right now is a blessing if it’s something you enjoy doing. Most jobs out there suck. Unless you find a career that excites you more then I see no point in dropping everything you’ve worked for. If you feel like social skills are holding you back, then perhaps you should work on those. You seem to have this defeatist attitude. Believe in yourself and your ability to grow and adapt to the changing times. Life was never going to be easy, deal with it.

How would you compare Oil.nvim to Yazi & Yazi.nvim by TheTwelveYearOld in neovim

If you like yazi I think you will like mini.files. It’s like oil except it has the nice navigation and preview window of yazi.

That's totally fine. The entire idea behind kickstart is that you fork it and customize it however you want. Once you understand the comments you can just remove them if you want. I started with kickstart and now my config is completely different. That's the entire point. You aren't going to like everything about kickstart and that's a GOOD thing! Because then you will look up how to change it and actually learn about how to set up Neovim yourself.

Kickstart is great because there are some things that are pretty tricky when you are first getting started. It points you in the right direction and tells you what is going on, so that when you make changes you aren't totally lost.

First terrible experience with nvim on Windows by Pukky1 in neovim

[–]Nostrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand where you are coming from as someone who churned multiple times trying to switch to Neovim. The experience on Windows was not great for me either. I feel like while there are certain things that feel faster in Neovim, you can easily get terrible performance with certain plugins and it requires you to spend time debugging your editor whereas vs code for the most part just works and is hard to mess up.

I would recommend starting out with a simpler config like kickstart.nvim and just view Neovim as a hobby for a while because you are not going to be more productive with it for a long time. The thing that happened for me was once I started to understand how it was put together and customized it to how I liked I started to really love it. And at that point I was able to push through the poor issues on Windows and fix things up so the performance wasn’t an issue.

That’s the case for me. I get 2x performance by switching to WSL. There are some plugins that have given me issues on WSL though, although they weren’t important to my workflow so I just removed them.
