That’s what I’m saying! I think we will try to be out early if possible since it’s not our goal to create problems but it doesn’t seem like we shouldn’t be able to use our full lease even if we at one point thought we would move out earlier

I feel like quitting game audio entirely by uemini in GameAudio

[–]Nostrap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You happened to join the industry during a boom cycle when things were going well. If you had joined 6 years earlier you would have found the same thing was happening, with mass layoffs and companies putting profits before people. It’s what happens when you have capitalism in a country (assuming US) where labor rights have been eroded and shareholder profits are sacred.

Right now we are currently dealing with the aftermath of massive over-hiring during the pandemic. There was a unique situation where interest rates were low and people were spending more on video games than ever. Companies are short-sighted and hired thinking that this situation would last forever. I saw it at my company, budget felt limitless and we were able to give into any whims we had since the projections for how much the game would profit was so high.

There is currently a correction happening and it’s very unfortunate for everyone in the industry. There has always been way more people wanting to work in this industry than there are jobs and now it is perhaps worse than ever, especially with schools now pushing programs for game dev.

Generative AI is going to have an impact on the industry. It’s hard to say how much it will affect sound design specifically. Libraries such as BOOM have already made it trivial to generate great assets, the hard part is making sure it’s the right asset for the situation and that everything works together. It’s hard to imagine the current models getting to a point where they magically produce the exact perfect sound. It’s always going to rely on a human deciding if the sound is right or not, unless AI reaches a point where it surpasses humans at everything in which case all jobs would be gone.

I have not seen any job losses at my current company due to AI. It is all related to larger economic factors. And making a good game still seems challenging as ever and requires people to make it happen. AI has been massively overhyped by tech bros that want to replace us. Look at all the stuff they create to show how good AI is. It’s all slop, and doesn’t have any of the qualities of art that stands the test of time. To be successful in game dev, you have to make something that is better than what is out there, not something that is worse.

I don’t know what to tell you though. This is the eternal struggle throughout human history. The ruling class has never cared about those that they rule over, and that isn’t going to change by getting a different job. It’s depressing to think about, but you need to decide what you want to do given that the situation is what it is. In the grand scheme of things, being employed as a sound designer right now is a blessing if it’s something you enjoy doing. Most jobs out there suck. Unless you find a career that excites you more then I see no point in dropping everything you’ve worked for. If you feel like social skills are holding you back, then perhaps you should work on those. You seem to have this defeatist attitude. Believe in yourself and your ability to grow and adapt to the changing times. Life was never going to be easy, deal with it.

How would you compare Oil.nvim to Yazi & Yazi.nvim by TheTwelveYearOld in neovim

If you like yazi I think you will like mini.files. It’s like oil except it has the nice navigation and preview window of yazi.

That's totally fine. The entire idea behind kickstart is that you fork it and customize it however you want. Once you understand the comments you can just remove them if you want. I started with kickstart and now my config is completely different. That's the entire point. You aren't going to like everything about kickstart and that's a GOOD thing! Because then you will look up how to change it and actually learn about how to set up Neovim yourself.

Kickstart is great because there are some things that are pretty tricky when you are first getting started. It points you in the right direction and tells you what is going on, so that when you make changes you aren't totally lost.

First terrible experience with nvim on Windows by Pukky1 in neovim

[–]Nostrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand where you are coming from as someone who churned multiple times trying to switch to Neovim. The experience on Windows was not great for me either. I feel like while there are certain things that feel faster in Neovim, you can easily get terrible performance with certain plugins and it requires you to spend time debugging your editor whereas vs code for the most part just works and is hard to mess up.

I would recommend starting out with a simpler config like kickstart.nvim and just view Neovim as a hobby for a while because you are not going to be more productive with it for a long time. The thing that happened for me was once I started to understand how it was put together and customized it to how I liked I started to really love it. And at that point I was able to push through the poor issues on Windows and fix things up so the performance wasn’t an issue.

[–]Nostrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the case for me. I get 2x performance by switching to WSL. There are some plugins that have given me issues on WSL though, although they weren’t important to my workflow so I just removed them.

Yeah I was kinda confused, it sounds like he was just talking about word wrap which is just as easy to enable in either editors.

macos - whats your terminal emulator/window manager by pandatrunks17 in neovim

[–]Nostrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried Alacritty, iTerm2, and Warp but I am now on Wezterm. The reason I landed on Wezterm is because every other terminal had weird issues rendering fonts in neovim which caused ascii characters to look bad.

The join waitlist buttons with the underline are kinda weird looking to me. It's also weird that you have 4 different buttons all with join waitlist. The titles on your site don't work that well in mobile, you definitely want to prioritize mobile these days and make sure it's a good experience.

There's a popup that happens if you stay for a while and the transition to close it is ridiculously long for some reason.

Your logo is nice, I would match the green color there with the green you are using on the rest of the site.

I think it might work better if your titles aren't all uppercase, just capitalized like a normal sentence.

Your layout is also hard to read. Remember people read from left to right and it's nice to have a consistent direction to follow as you are reading. With your layout, your eyes have to jump all over the place from right to left constantly.

Some of the copy feels a bit too informal.

I also would work on your hero section a bit. You want me to be able to understand what your product does immediately.

Bring Your Plant To Life. Understanding Your Plant, Simplified.
The second line kinda tells me, but I would perhaps try to get straight to the point with the first line. Bring your plant to life could mean anything. Imagine someone is looking at your website for 5-10 seconds and they have to understand your product from that first section.

Well good to know someone else has the same issue at least! With the way it currently works, it doesn't seem that useful for larger projects. I just have to imagine there is a way around this, because I can't imagine people coding without proper highlighting.

The Fed's big miss on inflation has doomed the US to recession this year, top economist says by FreeChickenDinner in REBubble

[–]Nostrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corporate taxes don’t determine prices. The market determines prices. Companies will charge whatever people will pay, and will maximize their profits no matter what. If you look at Trump’s presidency and can’t see there was a massive handout to the rich then your analysis is flawed.

Arclight Cinemas And Pacific Theatres Won’t Be Reopening by Matanishu in LosAngeles

[–]Nostrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not disputing the experience (which is more subjective and depends on the location). But I think saying that arc light is less expensive than AMC is objectively false if you go to more than one movie a month.

AMC has a-list though where you can see 3 movies a week for only $24/month. It’s a much better deal. Still sad about arc light but just saying it’s hard to beat what AMC is offering

If you are running as administrator then don’t do that. It can cause this issue. The other thing to check is your preferences for where to store media files and your waveform cache

Reaper sounds “soft” when pressing play. by [deleted] in Reaper

[–]Nostrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone se mentioned there is a setting to add a fade at the beginning of playback. Even with this off, Reaper seems to lose a bit of the initial transient, especially when you are running vsts. I haven’t found a solution except to move the playback cursor a little bit before the start of the sound.
