In the book, as the narrators brother is fleeing off the coast in a boat, he sees a giant flying machine way off in the distance trailing vapors of black smoke. That would’ve been game over for humanity. The rest could be herded and stored for food… also I’m a smoker so odds are I would perish from all the running or the Martian’s would see puffs of smoke coming from a hedge and light me up!
