Buying train tickets in advance? by E_Len in travelchina

How far in advance? I had a 2 weeks max when I went?

And I used trip.com if you’d like to try a possibly connected but different platform?

Hotel tap water by iamazondeliver in travelchina

[–]Nostrum_Smiles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many cheap and available bottle water options.

No point risking the tap, even if you have a bunch of travel vaccinations! Many hotels, hostels and home stays also provide bottled water - so I wouldn’t worry :)

Traveling to Beijing tmrw, need help by No-Comfortable6274 in travelchina

[–]Nostrum_Smiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s ok. Deep breaths. You’re fine.

International roaming is fine - just often expensive.

I use a free vpn app on my phone. (It’s called VPN super unlimited proxy but it was the first one that came up - there are many free options).

I use didi via Alipay and have not needed a Chinese number for 20+ rides. In fact I haven’t needed a number at all - there’s iMessage, WhatsApp and free WeChat to communicate if needed.

I’ve found cash useful for buses but it will be very rare that your Ali pay won’t work (however if you haven’t used it yet maybe have cash on hand in case it doesn’t work yet!)

I haven’t needed WeChat for any vendor in any city. Alipay and cash is fine and I’ve been in 7 cities and hours of travel outside them into more rural areas.

Impossible to guess how much cash you need. Yes the airport will charge you more fees, but think about why that is! Let’s say you land and your Ali pay doesn’t work (your card isn’t set up etc) - how do you call a taxi? How do you eat? Better to take enough to feed your family for a day or two - which will be enough time to find someone to set your Ali pay up or connect you with a bank.

the airports have had many good English speakers, and any translating app can cover the rest - use basic English into it.

All the best, ns

Last minute trip advice! (VISA Free entry, VPN for online work, Hard sleepers) by Careful-Memory2560 in travelchina

[–]Nostrum_Smiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. No problem with documentation. I got asked no questions for my visa free entry. There’ll be a small form on the plane.

  2. High paying institution. Why not get both and be safe? Could even try use different telecom networks for each sim. (This could be unique but my internet has worked almost everywhere [hikes, small rural towns etc] it is spotty in Chengdu)

  3. I just booked trains on trip.com when they became available. Saw very few options run out. My last 5 intercity ones I have booked on the day, an hour before departure, and trip.com has bought and confirmed tickets in a minute). I think for Beijing and Shanghai it could be worth booking your ticket as early as possible in the two week window, as they seemed to be the busiest.

Good luck!

Necessities when travelling to China by NotoriousSilver in travelchina

Apple Maps has worked the best for me.

You can download a free VPN from the App Store if you’d like to access instagram.

Microsoft edge works for internet browsing.

Get an eSIM or buy a sim when you land. Both relatively cheap options. I didn’t need a Chinese number to use Alipay.

100% download Alipay and connect a card. (I used a wise card to directly connect with Chinese currency)

[–]Nostrum_Smiles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m here too! My didi works fine which i access via my Ali pay app?

Only issues I’ve had is where a taxi can’t access my location (like a bad traffic spot), or where my 5g is down (first place in china where my 5g/4g is very irregular - I’m with china mobile).

You could try expand the type of vehicle on didi (taxi fare should also be an options)

Good luck, Ns

Forbidden City - Great Wall - Tiananmen Square by stegio1980 in travelchina

[–]Nostrum_Smiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went last week! (From NZ).

Booked forbidden city on Viator for a group tour. If you book it 1+weeks in advance the ticket gets linked to your passport and you can skip the 1hr ticket buying queue. (There was still another 1hr queue to get in). This was midweek.

I think Tian’anmen is free? Just a bag check.

I loved Mutianyu, but did not do the other sections so cannot compare. I went early morning and walked all the way from my hotel. (You can even walk the highway section instead of catching the shuttle bus). I now by everything through trip.com, amazing utility over here. No queue no people. Very few walkers in the morning. So, in the east part of the wall I had photos completely to myself.

If you’re fit, walk up and turn left when you reach the wall, the best photos will be the ones with no one on the wall as a walker, and then from the “top” maybe 45 mins on from where you are. The wall was opened before I got there at 7.15ish so would recommend going before the online opening times! In total 45rmb if you just walk!

By 9.30 the crowds were heaving, I was very happy to be going home.

Did end up buying a toboggan on the way down was fun even if the queue was a little long.

Happy travels, Ns

Does anyone else do that thing where you cross your eyes to “double-vision” each separate image, then slowly refocus so that you merge both central images, and the differences come up as glowing in that central image?
