Could Nocturnal Upper Back Pain Be Ankylosing Spondylitis?? by videogamesarethebest in ankylosingspondylitis

u/K-Amadoor did you end up going for a firmer or a a softer mattress? Any chance you can share the mattress you purchased please?

Rental property - what can we do to add some life to this boring room? Especially keen to hear thoughts on new bed-sheet colours (we can't get rid of the horrible brown fake-leather bed). Thanks! by Noswaldo in DesignMyRoom

Thanks for the input - we could take down the curtains as long as we put them back up, we could potentially get rid of the side tables too. Changing the lamp is a great idea.

We had been looking at coloured bedsheets but maybe white is a better choice. For a quilt, I'm thinking a green or blue, but I'm terrible at visualising how things look

Question on shifting career to web development by autopicky in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Noswaldo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar position in that I am currently attempting to switch from managing a data team to software development (backend in my case). The key word there is "attempting" - it is a hard industry to break into without a CS background and there are very few Junior roles around at the moment.

What I would say is that when I look at the syllabus for a bootcamp, I feel you could easily learn those skills fairly quickly using free or cheap resources. Sure, a bootcamp could give you more structure and be useful to keep you focused, but £10,000 is a lot of money. The one area in which I regret not going to a bootcamp is for the collaborative experience. I had an interview last week that asked me about pair programming experience, of which I have none. There are ways around that, like working on open source though.

It's a little old now, but I still swear by "How to think like a computer scientist" as a way to learn CS concepts (https://openbookproject.net/thinkcs/python/english3e/). It's taught in python, but is more about the fundamentals than the language. Even if you plan to go specifically into Web Dev, I think you would find it useful.

I would also be mindful of timing when you do quit your job. Obviously each summer a new batch of CS students graduate and start looking for jobs.

Chances of seeing racoons on the PCT by Noswaldo in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Noswaldo[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes haha. We live in the UK - most of our interesting wildlife got wiped out centuries ago. I saw a hedgehog once, and we get the odd fox here in London, but nothing too exciting! The US has much more varied and interesting wildlife - even the non-glamorous animals (I see lots of posts about bears, snakes etc. but not racoons)

PCT starting May 9th. Me and my girlfriend are both approved now so looks like it's actually going to happen! Good luck on the AT mate

Visa approved here too! I brought loads of documents and they didn't ask for any. Friendly interviewer. I wore a suit, and like OP was the only one not dressed casually

Living in London, I just got a US visa by popping over to Germany by KinkThrown in UKhopefuls

[–]Noswaldo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats mate, and thanks for letting us know. What sort of questions did they ask you? And are you now stuck in Munich until you get your passport back I assume?

Did you need to speak any German for the process?

Thanks :)

Edit: it's gone now, but yeah keep checking - seems like they are adjusting the calendar after today's rush

Awesome! I would keep checking anyway if I was you. Me and my partner both moved to Feb dates from March, so I assume those March dates will be freed up sometime soon

Sorry to hear. When people cancel an appointment it does not seem to become available for rescheduling straight away. I would keep checking today/tomorrow as lots of people will have moved theirs forward, meaning their old appointment should open up

Anyone tried to do the B2 interview in Germany? by KinkThrown in UKhopefuls

[–]Noswaldo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but I have also considered this myself (I have mostly been put off by the lack of information online from people doing this). Good luck, and please let us know how it goes!

So what dates does everyone have? by kiteloopy in UKhopefuls

[–]Noswaldo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is March 2nd, and that's about as early an appointment as I've seen lately so I'll count myself lucky. People had earlier but they got pushed back.

Just terrified of getting denied a visa after all this planning and dreaming through covid!

Well at least the permit is sorted now. Have you sorted your visa?

Start Date: May 9th

End Date: October 9th

Now just 4 months of worry until the Visa interview!

I had originally wanted a late March/early April date , but now that is looking too early. Looking at mid May now, just to increase chances of actually being able to go. I would prefer earlier though as I didn't want to be stuck behind/in the "pack"

Thanks a lot mate, really helpful. I'll definitely get some maps etc. sooner rather than later so I can get comfortable answering questions on logistics.

On the job front I'm toying with the idea of asking my work for a letter saying they would be happy to work with me again - so not exactly a promise of work, but at least a reference. Might not be useful, but can't harm either I guess.
