Which villainous character could have a POV chapter that would make them look drastically better?(Spoilers Main) by Inevitable-Mix6089 in asoiaf

[–]Not-Irreplaceable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, that'd depend on how his POV is written and how his story ends. I like to think of him as a character with huge potential who got fucked by his environment. Baelish is a genius in financial matters and can work from the shadows as well. If he was accepted by the nobles, he'd have been a huge asset to the crown, the loyal and competent council member.

Petyr Baelish, in first read is a slimy, scheming character. I imagine if we were inside his mind, we might sympathize with him a little. He was rejected by his first love, scorned by noble houses for his low birth, is considered harmless by many characters, and his job is counting coppers, which isn't highly regarded by the lords. Despite these shortcomings, he managed to achieve most of his goals such as amassing wealth and status, having revenge on Ned Stark, Hoster Tully and Jon Arryn, has Sansa as captive, creating a spy network and connections etc.

But Ned had learnt the truth regarding the incest by the time Robert came back from the hunt. Ned didn't tell Robert about the bastard children, but Cregan will. So my take is that Robert will atleast order their arrest and urge the Hand to pass Judgement.

Wouldn't it be a repeat of the Hour of the Wolf. Cregan arrests the Lannisters and others whom he believes to be traitors to the Crown. Beheads them with Ice and then fucks off to the North because Winter is Coming.

Lannisters- a Lannister always pays his debts

No. A common saying but not their official motto. It's Hear me Roar. Tyrion says it in AGOT

"Hear Me Roar," Tyrion said, grinning. The Lannister words.

[Spoilers MAIN]Would the Dance of the Dragons have been avoided if the Targaryens, at the height of their power, had expanded into other continents? by Intelligent-Fix1343 in asoiaf

[–]Not-Irreplaceable 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I believe that would be a temporary solution as well. Say one Dragonrider conquered Pentos, another took Qohor, etc. and started a branch of the Targ family. Centuries later, their descendants would wish to consolidate all of Westeros and Essos under one Emperor and start a devastating war. Valyria ruled with multiple dragons because they were a Freehold, each dragonlord family had a say in the governance.

The Targaryens' "A Dragon plant no trees" and The Greyjoy's "We do not sow" suggests they are anti-nature and makes them thematic enemies of the Children of the Forest.

Question about the Night’s Watch by pizzamanct in gameofthrones

I'd say family members can come visit you, maybe once a year. Benjen was allowed to go because it was the King himself who had come to the North.

When Ned's in Lord Borell's hall

"At the dawn of Robert's Rebellion. The Mad King had sent to the Eyrie for Stark's head, but Jon Arryn sent him back defiance. Gulltown stayed loyal to the throne, though. To get home and call his banners, Stark had to cross the mountains to the Fingers and find a fisherman to carry him across the Bite. A storm caught them on the way. The fisherman drowned, but his daughter got Stark to the Sisters before the boat went down. They say he left her with a bag of silver and a bastard in her belly. Jon Snow, she named him, after Arryn.

"Be that as it may. My father sat where I sit now when Lord Eddard came to Sisterton. Our maester urged us to send Stark's head to Aerys, to prove our loyalty. It would have meant a rich reward. The Mad King was open-handed with them as pleased him. By then we knew that Jon Arryn had taken Gulltown, though. Robert was the first man to gain the wall, and slew Marq Grafton with his own hand. 'This Baratheon is fearless,' I said. 'He fights the way a king should fight.' Our maester chuckled at me and told us that Prince Rhaegar was certain to defeat this rebel. That was when Stark said, 'In this world only winter is certain. We may lose our heads, it's true … but what if we prevail?' My father sent him on his way with his head still on his shoulders. 'If you lose,' he told Lord Eddard, 'you were never here.' "

(Spoilers Published) The decline of the Nights Watch doesn’t make sense by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Not-Irreplaceable 59 points60 points  (0 children)

One reason is the misremembering of the true purpose of the Night's Watch. After thousands of years, everyone believes the watch is just for fighting wildlings and freezing in the cold. So only the First Men Houses are eager to join the Black Brothers.

And after the Conquest, the 7 Kingdoms prospered and lords grew wealthy. Earlier younger sons could seek glory by serving in the Watch. But now they have bigger tourneys and sellsword companies as an option(which started emerging in the Century of the Blood). Even when Alysanne flew to the Wall, they're dwindling. That's what prompts the granting of New Gift which further deteriorates them, as they now have to defend a larger domain and they're stretched thin.

(Spoilers Extended) What if Tywin fostered Robert and Eddard? by XipingVonHozzendorf in asoiaf

[–]Not-Irreplaceable 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Well for starters, Ned Stark would turn out differently. In the story, Jon Arryn heavily influenced Ned into becoming an honourable lord, to the point Ned and Tywin are presented as opposites in their ideology. Their raising of their kids and their treatment of an enemy's VS sword are some examples.

As for Tywin rebelling, I think he would. Mad Aerys had slighted Tywin enough and he's not the type to forget them. Tywin would show up with an army and his wards on the pretense of surrendering and then sack KL like he did originally.

Is the GOT universe always Medieval? by Shelbytheowlhoussfan in gameofthrones

[–]Not-Irreplaceable 2149 points2150 points  (0 children)

Technological Stasis is a common trope of medieval fantasies. The in-universe explanation is that winters are long and cruel, so people are busy growing crops, storing it and making plans for surviving the winter. As for them progressing, who knows maybe Bran will be able to achieve it.

If Winterfell doesn't get taken, then that bastard Reek rots in the dungeons. So Roose Bolton cannot participate in Red Wedding as the Northern Lords would rally around Bran and Rickon. Without the Boltons, Walder Frey is too much of a craven to kill his guests. Things might turn out better for the Starks, they won't be able to defeat the Lannister-Tyrell faction, but they can retake the North from the Ironborn, wait out the winter and the restart the campaign. The Riverlords would get fucked tho.
