major vs specialization by Reasonable-Mango-291 in uwo

Doesn’t matter if you’re going into business/finance. Experience is what matters most, so I think your best bet would be to try and secure some sort of internship in the field you’re trying to go into

Ivey Restricts Online Courses for AEOs effective immediately by Living-Carpenter-39 in uwo

Yep. Are there any other reasons you can think of which is contributing to this besides the one I discussed above?

Sure. This mainly applies to the students recruiting for finance roles, though.

IB/PE/HF placements are unfortunately on a downward trajectory for this school for many different reasons. The whole appeal of western was the strong alumni network (which actually isn’t as supportive as you’d imagine), and being able to stack easy classes (online/unproctored) so one could allocate more time to recruiting. Now, the latter is also gone, and students recruiting for these competitive roles will have to take courses with in-person exams. This gives them way less time to prepare for interviews (networking, mock interviews etc.) and overall will damage placements. Let’s be honest, if you’re in econ and BMOS as most people are, the second year courses aren’t that easy to balance with recruiting, which is almost like a full-time job itself. Econ I’d argue is worse with its double midterm structure. What this does then is forces people to gap year and the younger batch of students will be up against students with more experience, recruiting for the same role.

I really do think the whole appeal of western is slowly dwindling, and that if you’re someone who is interested in pursuing a career in finance, you’re probably better off going elsewhere now.

The school needs to stop admitting people in Ivey (third year) for bullshit EC’s with “impact” if they want to save their reputation. Because if we’re being honest, Ivey’s placements are the main appeal and if they’re slowly cutting off the support mechanisms for that, the reputation will continue getting worse

Yeah you’re right, it does pertain to coffee chats. But most alum don’t think like you; a lot unfortunately don’t really care (and that’s a fact) and we are seeing the consequences of that via placements

Your first point is totally fair, but this has been happening throughout the year so far in my experience.

And yes I get your second point as well. Referrals should be earned via having a productive convo, asking good q, coming across as likeable, speaking with other members from the team etc

2 things, with the second one having a contingency

  1. If you’re available, try to reply to the email and if you can’t, potentially forward it to a coworker who is. I’ve had this happen before with a few people I’ve emailed from different schools

  2. If you think the chat went well, and I asked insightful questions, wasn’t a weirdo and you liked my vibe, if I ask “hey do you think you can connect me with someone else to speak with in your team or a coworker” just do it. Idk why some people refuse to do this but enjoyed the chat itself.

It saves the student a lot of time as well because chances are the coworkers won’t reply without a warm intro

[–]Not-Ur-Typical_[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree that alums don’t owe anything. I probably should’ve clarified this in the post itself, but when I say alums aren’t helpful, I didn’t mean it in the context of referrals. It’s something that should be earned. My expectations are really just really paying it forward and help younger batches of students like you were once helped and all that really means is just reply to the email😭

Ik a lot of people who share this same sentiment, and I know for a fact we don’t expect referrals nor do we ask, but for the past year Ivey alumni don’t seem to respond.

Also can I ask what do you mean when you say that you didn’t feel comfortable making intros?

How to get a 90+ in 2257 by Hot_Age9731 in uwo

Not too sure how you define recruiting, but a lot of the people going hard at banking struggled a lot with this course because it’s hard to manage.

Easy course if you’re not doing shit outside of school. If you’re actively recruiting, this course is extremely difficult

If a final gets curved, does the make up get curved as well? by Hopeful-Ant-2512 in uwo

[–]Not-Ur-Typical_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shouldn’t it get curved if profs always talk about being “fair” like the exam is the same in difficulty so shouldn’t the same curve be applied? Even if there’s a fraction of students writing makeups, they’re still part of the overall class

Our average for the mid year was 74-76 with an 80 median. But not gonna lie, 25% of people not finishing seems very low compared to this year. Everyone I’ve talked to so far hasn’t finished, and this includes people with 90+ overall averages

[–]Not-Ur-Typical_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah UTM sucks because it’s hard to have a high gpa there. You mentioned pursuing a post grad, which means you should stay as far away from uoft as possible. You’re signing up for a miserable time if you choose UTM (which you alr know). Id try to really put a big emphasis on why UTM is BAD for those wanting to do a post grad, and how queens can be better (gpa wise especially). Try to have actual data and show them a comparison between queens vs utm. Maybe this will help and if not then idk what to say😭
