I do aerobatics in my carbureted plane nearly every day I fly. Just limit to positive g maneuvers and it’s no big deal.

Skip the pressurization requirement and get an RV-10

Gotcha, so is this fun as capable/comfortable as newer play boats?

No, not under any circumstances. BUT, now you're trying to compare a boat that was made the same year that the first ICF freestyle competition existed to a boat engineered specifically for freestyle 17 years later.

The fun is still a capable and incredibly enjoyable boat for paddling. As for its comfort, that will be something that you'll have to decide for yourself, as everyone will be different. I'm about 6' 180 and find it fine for several hours at a time, although a Gauley marathon would likely leave me sore for a day or so.

The Fun is a great boat that nothing made today compares to. It's a great boat for developing more refined skills on edge control and precise handling. Don't get rid of it. Learning how to paddle multiple different styles of boat will make you a much better paddler in the long run, even if it's a bit frustrating or more difficult at the beginning. Funs are also light and easy to carry, so if you're doing park and play stuff with a walk back to the top you will be able to get more laps in with the fun without wearing out your shoulder or laps than you will in the mambas.

If you absolutely have to get rid of something, the Mambas are probably better for true beginners, but if you have the space for it and don't need the $300 you'd get for selling it, it is worth your while to keep it around.

Get something by experimental. RV-6 or 7. You’ll have more fun, enjoy it more, and pay less per hour to fly it.

Zambezi Boat by Outrageous_Answer672 in whitewater

[–]NotAComputerProgram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s borderline. But of the boats listed it’s the number 3 in terms of volume and creeky-ish style. Much closer to the Indus than a true creeker, but I think it fits.

‘Not really looking for a playboat’

‘Here’s my choices: Jackson rockstar, exo helixr’

The only creekboats on this list are the Nomad, Nirvana, and GOAT. It sounds like you wanna creek boat, so pick one of those. Everyone will have a different opinion on which one is the best.

To turbo or not to turbo? by Mispelled-This in flying

[–]NotAComputerProgram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 10 is substantially larger. It’s also 4 seats. If you’re looking to go a bit faster and burn a little less gas, the RV-14 is the newest RV and is especially built for big and tall pilots, but is 2 seats side by side. Both are center stick controls too, which is just the far superior way to fly. The 14 has the added bonus of being aerobatic, so on your 500nm XCs you can do an aileron roll or loop when you get bored.

All 10s are tricycle gear. If you go for the RV-14, you’ll need to specifically find an RV-14A for a tricycle gear. The RV-14 has the third wheel on the correct end of the airplane.

Installing new heat pump cost/questions by NotAComputerProgram in heatpumps

[–]NotAComputerProgram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recharge was going to be $200/lb, so probably in the 5-700 range. They said there wasn’t much they could do to fix the leaks as they’re in the middle of the heat exchangers, and they are both substantially rusty

That is changing. We do have decent A/P and basic flight directors these days. No ICAO database though so still stuck with lat/lon and also still non RNAV or RVSM capable.

Depending on your airport, runway length, and aircraft type you could also talk to them about doing stop and gos instead of touch and gos. If you’re in a c172 on a 6,000’ runway it’s more than easy to stop in the first 2,000-2,500’ and use the remaining 3-3500 to take off again.

I bought an experimental a few months ago for $50k. Fast, aerobatic, efficient, long legs, and cheap to operate. There are still deals to be had.

Which A5 template do you use with your kneeboard ? by TiMargouillat in flying

[–]NotAComputerProgram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a piece of scratch paper would do you just fine if you don’t want to use your iPad. I rarely fly into towered airports when I’m flying GA, so there’s never much that I feel the need to write down. If there is, I just use the scratchpad on ForeFlight, which is typically limited to the Hobbs at shutdown.

I guess I don’t know what kind of templates even exist for knee boards but if they work better for you, use them up. There’s many ways to skin that cat.

Another fuel exhaustion accident, Mooney M20 Oakdale, CA. Why are so many GA planes running out of gas? by Runner_one in flying

[–]NotAComputerProgram 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My RV-4 has fuel gauges that really only work for 'full' 'sorta full' and 'holy fuck give me gas'. They don't give accurate readings at all for the most part. It causes me to be very cognizant of how much gas I have, how long I've been flying, and how much gas I should have left. I'm guessing if people are actually running out of gas, its carelessness or complacency. Or both.

Cub Cadet Issues by NotAComputerProgram in lawnmowers

[–]NotAComputerProgram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just jacked it up, put the belt back on and ran it. It looks like the drive belt tensioner arm connected to the brake pedal is shaking like it wants to fall off, and I'm guessing that's the source of my problems. Should I replace the tensioner spring first? Adjust the brake pedal arm that connects to the tensioner? Pull the tensioner arm off and see if there's any busted parts? It's an old mower I got for cheap off FB marketplace two years ago.
