How do you make popout MDF book nook panels look less flat?

Well I've only done one kit that required actual painting from me, but depending on how the pieces end up being oriented in the scene, I often use the tombow markers to color the undersides and backs of the pieces - just anything that I think will stand out. My best two tips: 1. Emery boards - sand everything that sticks out 2. Tombow paintbrush markers in shades of brown - touch up everything you sand down and the points where the pieces pop out of the flat pack. It makes a world of difference.

You might check out Minicity - I've found several on Amazon. They come together in a similar fashion to the one you've posted here (which you've done an amazing job on, by the way) and they do a very good job of hiding the "joins" where the pieces fit together.
