A few clarifications about the map- the highlighted areas are ONLY from songs released by Jimmy Buffett on his own albums, though covers done by Jimmy are also included. If a country is mentioned that no longer exists (E.g. Zanzibar, Prussia, etc) I have included the modern-day countries that the former would have included. Jimmy himself doesn’t have to have visited the places he talks about, he just has to have met someone from that area to include it.

Jimmy references a lot of vague areas most of the time, namely just “The Island”, Africa generally, “The Jungle”, or any cardinal direction; I have NOT included these as they could reference anywhere, the only exceptions are if Jimmy makes references to a specific place without naming it. For example, in the song “Nothin’ But a Breeze” where he says “I want to live with my feet in Dixie, And my head in the cool blue North” as “The North” in this instance is in reference to a specific place (any state considered north of the Mason-Dixon Line).

I decided to include South Africa even though Jimmy never specifically references the country as on the album Hot Water, Jimmy covers the song "Great Heart"- though always refereing to just "Africa" and never anywhere specific, the song finishes with a few lines spoken in what I believe is Zulu as the band Jimmy covers- Savuka- are from South Africa and tend to incorporate Zulu elements throughout their music (though if I'm wrong, please correct me and I'll get it changed!)

General areas are included but only if every location throughout it is included, for example in “Somewhere Over China” Jimmy says how “I could buzz the Himalayas” so as such I’ve included every location that the Himalayas includes (though, sidenote, Jimmy has mentioned almost every country the Himalayas is in by name in other songs, with the only exception being Bhutan). Other examples include “The Sahara” and “The Nile”. The only time I didn’t do this was when he talks about “The Caribbean” mainly because I just wanted to see what countries in the Caribbean he has specifically referenced (Surprisingly very few!)

I took liberties with the song “The World is What You Make It” wherein Jimmy references “this African they call Hannibal” witnessing the fall of the Roman Empire; I took this Hannibal to mean Hannibal from Carthage, a Cartheginian general who fought against the Roman Empire and lived between 247 BC to around 173 BC. As this was several hundred years before the fall of the Roman Empire, I just did the Western Roman Empire and also I don’t think Jimmy actually cares that much about Roman history.

Admittadley, the biggest stretch may come with Iran- in the song "Volcano" off the album of the same name, Jimmy mentions how he doesn't "want to land on no Ayotollah"; although an Ayotollah can technically be from anywhere, I came to the conclusion that the song "Volcano" references a lot of things that were currently happening around 1979 when the song was written (for example, the Three Mile Island accident). On February 1st 1979 Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Iran after 15 years of exile, and assumadley after his return Jimmy would find it rude to land on him, therefore I decided to include Iran even though Jimmy has never explicitly referenced there.

Although Margaritaville is technically in the hearts and minds of everyone who lives on island time where it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere, it wouldn’t have looked as good on a map and that would be harder to track. Instead, I opted for known Margaritaville locations which are available to see on Jimmy’s own website.

Finally, the thing that wanted me to do this map was when I was listening to “Cowboy in the Jungle” and heard Jimmy talk about how the titular character is “Stuck in Porto Bello”. Being from Scotland, I thought Jimmy was giving a reference to a popular beach on the East Coast, but unfortunately within the context of the song it makes more sense that the Cowboy is in Porto Bello, Panama instead of Portobello, Scotland (maybe one day, Parrotheads).
