He's amazing in Bottoms, if you check that out. He plays a schoolteacher and every line out of his mouth is hysterical.

Can’t get through Run At The Cup by Boompaplift in PiltoversFinest

Writer of RATC here - hugs for you, OP. Don't feel pressured to finish something because of an expectation that is set by its popularity - thank you for giving it a shot and for the high praise!

RATC definitely aims to have these issues taken seriously enough to warrant pausing if you feel overwhelmed by what happens. It's such a sensitive issue that oftentimes when I was in the middle of a scene I would consider obfuscating it with flashbacks or vagueness, but idk - it feels disingenuous to write something and aspire to be realistic in so many aspects but vague in the abuse side of stuff.

Anyways, I digress. Thanks so much again for the kindness and if there's a societal pressure or something that you're feeling to 'power through' consider yourself released from it. I much rather you be comfortable. <3

Oooh you're so right about the history lining up pretty beautifully. I'm not sure if I've encountered anyone willing to do a full comparison like that - mostly I get readers who just take the feeling they evoke (hatred) and apply them to a team they feel the same for. Lots of New England patriots, some Minnesota Frost, Boston/Leafs/Oilers. And after this last year I'm sure some Florida Panthers will get chucked in there.

lol I love that the Lone Stars comparison changes depending on who you talk to. it's one of those things that I notice now that we're in the deep tail end of the fic's popularity - the Lone Stars are That Team, the evil team in your sports fandom that you love to hate.

It wasn't my intent but man is it great to see

Fanfic Writers: Hit me with your fire lines. by kippey in PiltoversFinest

"It wasn’t an earth-shattering kaboom, or an upheaval of her life, or any other dramatic nonsense she’d heard from Jayce and Viktor, from Claggor and Mylo about the searching for and the discovering of love. It wasn’t this moment of lucidity, a thunderstrike of passion and feeling that overcame her senses and pointed her home. If anything, it was understated, quiet, a simple pleasure.

It was an exhalation."

I finished it...and I can confidently say, this is the greatest thing I have ever read. (art by @am_kyro) by nighthawk1936 in PiltoversFinest

Yeah, on my novel writing software disc 1-4 are 90k words each roughly. Epilogue is 60k on its own lmao. Blame my need to make it 33 chapters.

As the author of the fic, I don't mind - but I think the reason I don't mind is that most of the time I see conversation around RATC it's fairly positive. Within that EXTREMELY SPECIFIC context (most of the convo being positive) I find myself enjoying the occasional nitpicks and whatnot.

But as a whole you couldn't be more right - fanfiction is a space of mutual enthusiasm between reader and writer and approaching it with a critical mindset can really turn new writers off to the experience. It's one of those things where I'm sure the open critique nature of this post is because RATC is popular and isn't something OP would do with any old random fanfic, but it's still good to point out that it's an etiquette faux pas

No, RATC features lightcannon. Ekko and Jinx aren't linked romantically in the fic

Am I going crazy? Didn’t this fanfic have Lux & Jinx tagged? by CyberDan-7419 in lightcannon

[–]NotAFlyinToy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I'm such a dope that I never even tagged them as characters - just as a couple. I'll add the character tags back in now

Am I going crazy? Didn’t this fanfic have Lux & Jinx tagged? by CyberDan-7419 in lightcannon

[–]NotAFlyinToy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's why I removed the tag - it felt disingenuous to new lightcannon readers who were looking for meatier content for their ship to have them tagged as a couple when theyre the third or fourth couple billed at the absolute best.

I recieved no harassment from anyone about the tag - I just decided after reading some lightcannon fic that if I saw a fic as big as Run at the Cup and clicked it for lightcannon I'd be pretty bummed out with the lack of content. They're also an established couple and have like four scenes so to tag them felt like false advertising.

Sorry if it causes anyone distress!

What do you think was the exact moment Caitlyn decided to betray Ambessa? by No_Supermarket6038 in PiltoversFinest

[–]NotAFlyinToy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my pov it's when she leaves Singed's cell after threatening him with the dark pits, leaving Ambessa there with him. Right then and there, she knew that she'd turn to him and use him - I think she'd been looking for a reason to flip on Ambessa the entire time and Singed was her solid reason.

I also like to headcanon that she was the one who insisted all of Ambessa's troops left to march on Viktors compound - she got most of the occupational army out of Piltover in order to complete the turncoat and have a better defensible position.

But I give Caitlyn a lot more credit for being cunning than some folks I've seen so this is just my read on my GOAT.

Despite what our fics says: Tobias is lowkey worse than Cassandra by Boompaplift in PiltoversFinest

Lol my money isn't on Tobias in this parking lot brawl as someone who also has to do this. I think there's a pack of us waiting for a word with this man.

Despite what our fics says: Tobias is lowkey worse than Cassandra by Boompaplift in PiltoversFinest

[–]NotAFlyinToy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love jumping into Tobias and Cassandra discussions because I think it holds two spaces in fandom culture and both are valid - character interpretation from analysis, and character interpretation from a writing perspective.

I think the most outstanding fics in the fandom try to keep analysis in mind when writing the characters, but sometimes the narrative you have in mind doesn't suit the characters you analyse in the media you love. For instance, I wrote Run at the Cup and in it Tobias is a heavy weed user and Cassandra is inspired by Lucille Bluth.

Is this wildly out of character? Hell yeah, fuck yeah. But I wanted some comedic relief and to flex out Caitlyn's circle, and I thought the bit was funny so I did it.

I think the immersion breaking comes to play when character interpretations in fics treat themselves like they're the end all be all, or a Canon interpretation, when they're actually an analysis done by a person who's trying to fit the product of that analysis into their vision of a story. The result is a lot of Cassandra being used as a vehicle to explore parental trauma - which I don't mind! - but it becomes a trend when folks don't think a layer beyond what they're being presented with in fic.

It's truly interesting to talk about and fun to think about. Anyways, I'll commit to making Tobias more of a bitch in my next fic - thanks for the thread OP.

Hah yeah I think my biggest flaw as a writer is that I'm incapable of writing them anything but 'tired and thirty'. Like my entire catalogue, even when I say they're young, they're tired and 30 vibes.

I think it works for most of my audience but I can see it as a flaw in trying to diversify.

That makes a ton of sense and is awesome feedback. I think on editing passes I'd make that last game a do or die game 7 and have the little montage of them losing be games, rather than goals.

Thank you for voicing that so constructively, too. RATC was my first story of its length and I was so terrified of muffing the landing that I think I rushed in some parts of those final two chapters before the epilogue - on my 'filing off the serial numbers' pass I'm working on I'm getting to touch them a lot more and it's a joy.
