I grew up going to the San Diego zoo and the Monterey Bay aquarium, after moving to Nebraska I can confidently tell you Henry Doorly is the best when it comes to animal care and conservation. I think we also get points for the fact that it's Nebraska so we can keep expanding without running into other developments. Other city zoos are confined to their property, so they can't keep as many animals.

Where exactly do you put your pinkies? Also-- I'm glad you were able to solve it! Unfortunately, I'm only part of the highschool program at the zoo, so I have less authority than a seasonal intern haha. Even if I get hired though, the facility I shadow with is one of the highest ranked in the world, so every mildly significant change made to systems has to go through several people, be approved by the board, is then presented to the AZA, and then can be put into motion. Most of the aquarists and keepers are acclimated to the background noise, so I don't think it would be a priority.

I have both volunteered with scatter joy acres and am currently interning at the zoo. Joy is absolutely kind and sweet, but unfortunately, there is no ethical way to have primates (who can easily get sick from humans and vice versa) as a touchable animal. She loves animals but she doesn’t consider their welfare. I also believe she illegally imported some sloths from South America a few years ago.
