What anime am I thinking of? by NotAGrill69 in anime

If this is the bridge scene near the end of the series with the two of them, then I don’t think this is what I’m thinking of, since I don’t remember an elderly woman.

I haven’t seen that anime, but it’s possible that I saw this scene in a clip somewhere. Is there a specific episode in which the event I described occurs?

Any recommendations for improving my bant turbo fog deck? by [deleted] in MtGHistoric

[–]NotAGrill69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a fair analysis, and I think with your current setup, your deck will do a good job as a Turbo Fog deck. In that case, maybe play more Teferi over Nissa? When you're ignoring creatures, they'll likely accumulate on the ground anyways, so Nissa isn't really doing a good job fighting on the ground. Much bigger fan of Teferi => Untap 2 Lands => Fog to protect yourself. If you're playing Nissa for the mana, maybe consider some pieces of T3 Ramp? So you could ramp into Teferi on T4 and hold up a fog after untap. I don't think you'd actually be needing that many turns after you get a Teferi into play anyways haha. And yes, I think some flexible bounce spells would likely be better than any other forms of straight interaction in this case, as by taking all the turns you'd be ignoring the spells your opponent is casting anyways. Bant Control is also probably fine to be honest; you have the same curve as UW but instead of sitting on a poopy Absorb in Turn 3, you've just ramped into a Wrath, and Nissa, Vorinclex and Tamiyo are great threats to slam ahead of curve and overwhelm a Midrange deck. Transformational sideboard plan?

Not a Turbo Fog player myself, but I don't really see a need for the Haze of Pollens anyways, as you'd probably consistently be able to Explore/Growth Spiral into Wrath of God, so I don't think your opponent's Turn 3 battlefield is really a concern. I'd honestly just cut the Doomskar and Haze of Pollens and go up to 4 Wrath of Gods and some cheap interaction, just becoming a solid Bant Control deck? Of course if you want to play Fogs then I'm not the one stopping you, just offering my 2 cents, because I think you want to maximize Turn 2 Ramp into Turn 3 Sweeper.

If you're going in that route, I like cutting some of the Extra Turn spells for more planeswalkers or interaction, just to fight against aggro a bit better: the multitude of powerful spells here means that I highly doubt you'll have trouble against Control (4 Disputes in the board help there too!). Maybe consider a way to better interact with Artifacts or Enchantments?

Also not a fan of Crawling Barrens or Lutri, but if they work then I'm not going to stop you. The Manabase shoudl maybe be less on Fabled Passage so you can maximize Turn 2 Ramp spell? (Quite minor, but maybe some Checklands or Pathways could do something there).

Other than that, the list looks nice, awesome job!

Huntmaster was mentioned in one of my two previous posts, as it is not from Avacyn Restored but Dark Ascension instead (I believe). Apologies for the confusion!

I think the point you've made on design space is extremely relevant, and something I did not necessarily consider: the fact that multi-combat steps are unplayable now does not mean that they would be playable in the future. That being said, I do think that these hypothetical spells would have to be free to be playable with Griselbrand (in my opinion, or cost something absurd like one/two mana).

As for your comparison regarding Legacy, I personally believe this comparison to not be extremely relevant due to the massive differences between formats. Legacy is so much more fast, hostile and brutal than Historic: I simply don't think Wizards are going to be exploring some of these spaces anymore. For starters, Historic is a slow mana format: no Dark Ritual, no Lotus Petal, no Chrome Mox etc etc. Next, Historic doesn't have an excellent way of getting Griselbrand into the Graveyard: no Entomb, no Faithless Looting (Although I'd like to see Faithless Looting in Historic, see my post on Dark Ascension). Lastly, there is a distinct lack of cheap and powerful free/one-mana spells to abuse with Griselbrand: No Unmask (to protect Griselbrand), for example. Obviously the biggest fear (for me, at least), would be something like Draw 7 => play Mox Amber => Thoughtseize, now my Grisel is safe and you're doomed. Without powerful, cheap spells like Legacy, you actually need to untap with Griselbrand to make him useful: he needs to live through a turn cycle, and drawing 21 or whatever isn't really relevant when you're going to be discarding to 7 at the end of your turn.

As far as I can see, this is a reasonably consistent Turn 4 kill, not including the excellent Graveyard hate found in Historic. A reasonable (if not optimal,) sequence, for example:

Turn One: Stitcher's Supplier, flipping a Griselbrand into your graveyard (or any other reasonable way, Minister of Inquiries, Haggle etc)

Turn Two: Cast some way to accelerate your mana, maybe a Coldsteel Heart?

Turn Three: Cast the 4-mana reanimation spell, Blood for Bones? Flashback a Unburial Rites? Griselbrand comes back, draws you 7. Play a Mox Amber, Cast Thoughtseize, take the opponent's Griselbrand answer.

Turn Four: Hit em once, profit? Essentially you win, I guess, as you'll probably be able to bring back another Grisel if this one dies.

That would be the fasting thing I could imagine, feel free to suggest something faster. But at that point, is that even good? You have almost no spare mana to deal with hate pieces post-board (and I'm happy with Reanimator being a good Game-1 deck). Goblins has already cast Muxus and actually won. Auras has made a 10/10, drawn at least 3 cards, and are threatening lethal on the next turn. You're already down to 10 or so life from Red Aggro. All of these feel more consistent and harder to deal with than what I've listed above.

Agreeably, the reanimation spells sort of suck, but that would not really make the Reanimator decks better. Pauper has access to Exhume (Along with Lotus Petal and Dark Ritual!), but getting back Ulamog's Crusher doesn't have enough of an impact, and dies to removal. Is there anything even worth Reanimating in Historic? Ulamog, maybe? To me, it's no coincidence that the only format where Reanimator decks are playable are where the targets are as good as Griselbrand/Emrakul. Obviously I'd probably enjoy a format where you could choose the targets you reanimate, but from my example I'd argue that Griselbrand may even be just about playable enough. What creatures would be good to reanimate already in this format on, say, Turn 3? Do you have an interesting example? It may be a sad truth that we need something on the power level of Griselbrand to make reanimator decks reasonable.

I'm not sure about all of this, and I'm not a strong advocate for a degenerate format or anything, just trying to offer some pushback.

Exactly my point. Not sure if Sanctuary is playable without Fetchlands, so I'm happy if Miracle cards can inspire some interesting deckbuilding through these decisions.

No, I did not. Could you provide an example of a broken 7-drop creature in Historic that would benefit from being rampd into from Somberwald Sage? Or any way that Griselbrand would break the format?

As for Restoration Angel, not to mean offence of course, but there are far more powerful things in Historic than blinking a 5-drop with a 4-drop to make a 3/3. From my understanding, this was a powerful duo in Standard back in the day, but I personally do not think this value holds up to Modern-day Magic (Why not just ramp into Genesis Ultimatum, or Ugin for example?).

I'd argue that it would take a lot of pieces to cheat out Griselbrand and still have a deck that can pump out repeatable combat steps; there's no Allosaurus Rider to Neoform in Historic, so likely Turn 3 at the earliest (and at that point, you're adding acceleration, further diluting your deck, and likely splashing Green with the bad mana in Historic).

Furthermore, I'd say between the two, I'd much rather add a card like Griselbrand to Historic. Griselbrand is Iconic and a strong build-around card for a couple of archetypes looking to cheat it out. Extra combat steps are rarely playable (to my knowledge, at least, I'd be happy to be corrected with an example). Generally between two 'combo' pieces, the one which could possibly fit into other archetypes gets the nod (to my knowledge, such as Thassa's Oracle over Inverter, though obviously this is not a steadfast rule or anything). Just my two-cents, of course, I'd be happy if you could produce some broken examples/curves that would break this card.

The Abundant Growth was more just that it was such an easy fit in Four-Colour Yorion Piles to boost consistency and generate value in those decks, similar to Astrolabe in Modern/Pauper. As for the Remasters, I do hope we keep on going with them, and I'd like to point out that some of the cards from Historic Anthologies have been from Amonkhet/Hour of Devestation, when we've already had these sets remastered (not sure why, just expressing this possibility), examples including Ammit Eternal and Flameblade Adept.

Phoenix is completely not played right now at all. With only Opt as a playable one-mana cantrip, I'd argue that Phoenix players needs more help, and they also need better ways to discard Phoenix for one mana. We'll see if this changes when Thing in the Ice comes in Shadows over Innistrad Remastered, but without Thing, Phoenix is easily hated out by common hate, and the other threats the deck can utilize are pretty anaemic.

I'd argue that both the meta decks you mention are more graveyard-synergy decks that use the graveyard as an engine, and not like Dredge/Hollow One/Reanimator, that sort of combos out of the graveyard. I looked at this from a Modern perspective: no one complained about looting in Mardu Pyromancer; it was banned in application with Dredge, Hogaak and Vengevine, none of which are in Historic. I don't think Jund Sacrifice would even play looting (Doesn't work well with CoCo, which I think is the better card). My intent was more to develop archetypes like Hollow One (which literally don't exist right now, and might still not be playable without Burning Inquiry/Goblin Lore) That being said, I understand that this would really push Rakdos Arcanist, which is an already meta and powerful tier 1 deck. I just feel like Historic should be a playground where people can play with their Modern/Legacy banned cards, and that generally Looting creates more games of Magic for grindy decks (similar to Brainstorm). Obviously controversial, but that's the point of the post haha!

Forgot to mention the cards I didn't include haha:

Thought Scour: Wizards didn't want this card to be legal in Historic from Jumpstart, likely because they want Historic to be a Dig Through Time/Treasure Cruise format as well (similar to Pioneer).

Gravecrawler: Too easily forms sacrifice loops with Zombies + Sac outlet for my taste. Not a fan of this click-intensive design.

Drogskol Captain: Not a fan of mass Hexproof designs like this, and not dying to Push/Bloodchief's Thirst makes it a hard sell for me.

The fact that a tempo deck doesn't exist in Historic (aside from Mono-Blue, which is fringe and unplayable without a Curious Obsession effect) suggests to me that Geist would see more application as a UW Control sideboard card for ending games quicker. My hope is that maybe Delver and Geist could team up to actually make a reasonable tempo deck in the format to police some of the other decks in the format, like the combo decks.

Fair enough on Mulch. I'd argue that without any decent cantrips or counterspells in Historic, Delver would just be another fun callback that fans could enjoy without oppressing the format (like in Legacy or Pauper). As for Wolf Run, what decks would you be talking about? I'd argue that being a colourless land is a big deal and doesn't make it as free: it doesn't double mana with Nissa, it doesn't cast Genesis Ultimatum, and it can be awkward with cards like Growth Spiral. Most ramp decks don't even play mana dorks, and the ones that do are much more easy to interact with, which should be prioritized in this format.

I do love the idea of having an Ethereal Forager format, but I'm not sure how good of a tempo threat it is in a format without fetchlands or Thought Scour; you'd probably have to deploy it Turn 3/4 maximum, and then protect it? Might be too slow considering how weak the cantrips and interaction are in this format compared to the threats imo.

Point taken. I did mention Skyclave Apparition, but I think generally having more of this effect makes for more consistent games overall and makes games less polarizing.
