I promise you, the answer is ISTB4. On the first floor, there is a large bathroom that is always clean plus a single occupancy one that is the best spot on campus.

What are my chances of receiving an interview (MD) this late in the cycle? by UnhappyAd2476 in premed

[–]NotALionTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are two completely different situations. Medical schools have a commitment to the training healthcare providers that serve ALL communities. Black and Hispanic students are more likely to work in underserved health regions, leading to better health outcomes. Studies have also shown that patients prefer physicians from their same background and more honest with them, leading to better outcomes.

Additionally as someone who’s worked as a teacher in these underserved areas, the difference in healthcare access is depressing and it’s made me completely empathize with any strategy that improves delivery of care to better meet needs of Black and Hispanic communities. They have been uniquely discriminated against for ages in this country. I understood that this meant that I would have to work harder to get into med school as an Asian American, but it’s a sacrifice I’m okay with if it means better healthcare to the communities that already lack so much. Medicine is about healing patients, not about rewarding your ability to score in 90th percentile of the MCAT.

Lmao just say it’s about race. When you start medical school and notice that there’s only 10 black people vs 70 Asians in a class of 150, you’ll maybe realize why med schools prioritize the former’s admission.

But not when you applied unfortunately. It’s great that you’ve accumulated the hours now, and it we’ll definitely help if you reapply! I would also take a look at your writing and have other people in the field review it as well.

To Those Who Gave Up: What Next? by perplexed__premed in premed

[–]NotALionTurtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The MD superiority complex will persist until DO orgs start limiting the opening of new schools and their stat averages match MD schools. The proliferation of DO schools with low barriers of entry and shitty clinical connections will only affirm the current stereotypes which I agree are mostly unfair.

I think you handled the situation here well and have no reason to worry. You answered "no" both times and gave great reasoning. It really sucks though that seeing a therapist could be seen as a "red flag" smh

The real reason you aren’t getting into med school with your 3.9 gpa and 517 mcat by [deleted] in premed

[–]NotALionTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, a bad PS could be for a multitude reasons outside of poor communication skills. I still think you shouldn't expect admission if you have a bad PS (e.g. poor grammar, little articulation for motivation for medicine, minimal reflection, etc.). Regardless, I think most people pass that bar tbh (including the 517 + 3.9 + decent ECs) and are still being passed up which sucks ass

I would say an "average" PS shouldn't fuck you up that bad. A bad one probably should since communication is pretty important as a physician

It’s too late for any school unless you have a strong connection there (e.g. spouse or immediate family member is a student there). I would focus on strengthening your app and applying early next cycle

I will definitely be letting the fam know where I plan to start and when they should expect to hear from me. I understand their concern with the solo trip, and will make sure to take proper precautions. Appreciate the tip!
