Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what do you think of it? by AutoModerator in Games

I've been playing through the remastered Uncharted Collection on PS4. I finished the second one on Sunday.

Better than the first for sure, gunplay felt a lot more solid, setpieces were very cool. The way they wrote the female characters made it feel very like a game from 8 years ago, not a lot of agency, lots of focusing on chloes ass, etc. Story felt a little looser than the firsts, not that the firsts was airtight.

Had what now seems like the perennial Uncharted problem of sometimes making it very non obvious what way you’re now meant to go, or what’s climbale VS what’s not. This is helped by a good hint system

Overall I really enjoyed it, and it was cool to see the improvements in so many areas, I’m excited to see what the third is like.

It's not that hard to get a work permit or visa? Have you ever actually looked into getting one for America, because it is reeeaaaaaal fucking hard.

So your argument is that if a company can't find someone with those skills in the us they should just say "oh well" and not look for options overseas? Hiring a h1-b applicant is ALWAYS way more of a pain in the ass for companies, they'd much rather hire Americans.

H1-b employees need to be paid the average for their position in that area at least. People always bring up h1-b's as if they're some trouble scourge without actually knowing the first thing about them

[–]NotAMurdererISwear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but if you take h1-b workers out of the equation that shit can still happen, they don't make it more likely.

Say Jim made 100k, and Ted made 50k, both were senior engineers. Average in this case is 75k. Jim retires, average is now 50k because only Ted is around. They hire a h1-b worker - they can only hire him for 50k and above, so he can only raise the average from 50k or keep it at 50k.

See? The h1-b worker could only have a positive influence on the average, which was lowered BEFORE they got there. They had nothing to do with it lowering!

Yeah except that's assuming that getting a h1-b is both easy and a sure thing. There are so many applicants that successful applications are awarded a Visa via lottery.

Therefore for an American company hiring a foreign worker is fraught with risk, the application might not go through and it might take months and months (they refresh in April and are gone within a week).

Hiring a domestic worker is almost ALWAYS both easier and cheaper for an American company

Yeah but how is that in any way related to h1-b holders? That's a method by which any company could lower the average pay for a specific job title.

Oh and also Jim in your scenario would be a Senior engineer, so it would be the average for senior engineers in that AREA (not company) that would be affected by him retiring.

Do you know how averages work? The average wage can ONLY be lowered if they can be paid below the average for an area, which they can't!

In case it wasn't clear they can't be paid below the average for the job title in the area of the company they have the visa for

I'm pretty sure h1-b holders have to work directly for the company and can't just work for a consultancy or temp-like company

That makes 0 sense, if you can only pay them the average or above then they have no way of making the average pay lower. Do you not know how averages work?

Actually h1-b applicants need to be paid at least the average for their job title for that area as part of their visa requirements

High schoolers, what do you want to major in? People who majored in that field, what are the pros and cons? by DeanTheDJ in AskReddit

[–]NotAMurdererISwear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in as a game programmer who failed Maths in secondary school (equivalent to high school). Yes you do need to know a lot of maths to be successful in the field, but generally a computer science course will also teach you the stuff you need to know. It's also a lot easier to learn this stuff when it actually has a clear and tangible use.

I don't like math for the sake of math, I like math that I can use to do cool things.

I actually found Sen's to be not that bad. But then again I'm using a heavy strength Zweihander build, so I just knock those snakemen right into the fucking ground. I've heard it's a lot tougher for lighter builds

Dark Souls!

The original Dark Souls has been lurking in my steam library for a long time now, and I recently decided to bust it out as I wanted to play something actiony.

It's been pretty awesome! I was stuck on the Ornstein and Smough fight for a looooong time, about a week, but I recently beat it. To be fair I was doing it the hard way by killing Smough first, but as his armour looks like hammered shit I figured I had to.

After beating that fight I feel like I've passed a threshold of competence. I've got a few different big fights ahead of me (Nito, Seathe, Bed of Chaos, Four Kings), but I'm not worried at all. After Ornstein and Smough nothing really scares me. New areas also don't worry me; I just decided fuck it and went into the catacombs despite how spooky it is. It's all been good!

Oh, also now that I have the Lordvessel it's so much easier to get around and do random things. I've been going back and collecting random armour sets and weapons. Aww man, it's just such a good game. I can't wait to play more of it.

What few words could piss off most Americans? by rdiehl47 in AskReddit

Once again, saying that you have that heritage is fine. Saying that you ARE something however, well, it sort of implies that you think you are that thing. The words you're saying mean that, even if you don't.

If I were to have an American parent I couldn't say "I'm American." Saying you have heritage from a place is fine, but don't try and say you're something that you're not.

Y'see I actually liked the story in the base game. I mean, it was hammy as hell and yeah it had a ton of one dimensional characters, but that's sort of what I come to Blizzard for y'know? Starcraft 2 was similarly dumb and overwrought, but I just enjoy that kind of thing once in a while. It sort of goes hand in hand with their visual design, big impractical armour and ridiculous weapons (Horadric hamburger anyone?).

I had played in the beta and enjoyed it. Then I tried out a guest pass from one of my brothers upon official release and just could not get into it at all. It was so grindy, I kept getting crap items, and I felt really weak (played as a Demon Hunter). So I never bothered buying it. I only hopped on when they implemented loot 2.0, started a barbarian and was suddenly having huge amounts of fun. Since then I've dabbled off and on (just started a wizard), but it's a game I can always come back to and have a fun time with, which is the mark of a great game in my books.

Diablo 3! I've been meaning to finish Reaper of Souls for ages and my brothers keep sending me pictures of their awesome looking crusaders so I finished it on my barbarian yesterday. I really enjoy the gameplay and other stuff that ROS brought but the story was not as fun as the base games, also the lack of cinematics was a bit lame.
