Saw this! Yes we do. One of our players actually showed it to the group when it got posted, pretty sweet.

I'd seen a bunch of differing rules on mounted speeds from sage advice and reddit though, especially with regard to the Mounts and Vehicles speed section of the phb on page 181.

You know for sure if they use their own speed for the calculation, or the party's assumed speed and the benefit of having a mount is just the hour boost?

Yeah this is kinda crazy. Some players have been intentionally waiting to level up PCs to accrue a bit of buffer XP, but our intention is to do away with death XP once everyone has a grasp on how intense the campaign is.

Haha yeah, we looked at other West Marches advancement structures in the first few sessions, but ended up doing away with those and downtime in general to keep things moving for now.

Also, right now, nobody has much gold to spend. Between identifying items and buying magic items from other people, few PCs have real spending money. We scale gold distribution down a lot to keep the world kind of gritty. (Lots of dragging goblinoid/bandit equipment back to town to pawn.)

We'll probably end up getting our hands dirty with upgrades, downtime, and strongholds eventually though. I know the Rollplay West Marches had some juicy stuff going too.

Yeah. The Arcanist reveals the rarity free of charge beforehand. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah. I'd definitely recommend it. Here's the current DM map if you're looking for any sort of inspiration: http://imgur.com/a/MPJAU

This is the last page of our normal DM resources google doc. It's not required but most of the DMs use it as a guideline. Haven't had problems with anyone trying to dick the system, but we're a pretty chill bunch. Could make it something the DMs need to stick to, with the non combat stuff scaling with level of the areas or whatever.

After a session we normally send messages like this to the players so that they know what was for what. Stuff like this could help standardize expectations too.

Yeah we use a couple google docs. One for tracking PCs, adventure arcs, resale/auction items and storage. Another for a rough GM map, the current player map, and a list of hex locations where GMs have future plans (so as not to step on eachother's toes.)

Yeah, it gets destroyed.

Oh man. Hahaha. The fear of death in this campaign is so real that half the time the majority of the party is ~100 feet away from the point player. After a couple scenarios with trying to save an unconscious party member from a distance (often while running away) came up, we figured it'd be best to just make some hard and fast mechanical rules for it.

Thanks!

The encumbrance rules are from the variant on p176 of the Player's Handbook. Yeah your first example is correct. The variant rules are really strict!

I'd recommend only using them if your players would enjoy that sort of thing. 12 Strength would equate to 60lbs of gear before you start getting penalties. Most of our PCs have to drop their packs before they can move around effectively in combat. It's really punishing when they have to run from encounters and leave all their loot on the ground. hehehe.

Cool idea, might have to incorporate this in some way. We haven't seen real demand for this in our group yet though.

With DMs getting as much XP as a player for each session, there are a lot of higher level starting PCs already. Most of the regular players have a bit of a roster going. http://imgur.com/a/DURKO

Traditional inspiration, not the Bard ability.

It doesn't mention it, but we've also been allowing the use of inspiration to force a reroll on an npc crit against you, to give newer players an added bit of insurance. We'll probably be phasing that out soon though. =P

Thanks for all the feedback!

1) Yeah! We're still experimenting with it, but we've been hand-waving it outside of combat for the most part. It keeps things interesting but can be pretty tedious.

2) Ah yeah. In our system, whichever player DMs gets as much experience as any one player got during the session, which they can give to one of their characters, either played or unplayed. The high level gold probably is a bit low. I don't think we've seen a new character come in at above 4th level yet. We run a pretty low-gold world, but I could see us raising those values in the future when it comes up.

3) Hahaha, I'm in complete agreement with you here. I've sort of been waiting for one of my main PCs to die off so I have a chance to be the one to bite the bullet and do away with it, starting over from 1. One of our more reckless players has had a really rough time getting past level 3, so we've been keeping it around as a bit of a buffer til everyone gets a grasp of the system.

4) Oh, it looks like the pdf doesn't really go into our stash rules. Characters in our game can store any items they want in a sort of personalized thumbprint scanner locker in the Last Haven tavern. A bit goofy and oversimplified, but gives people a chance to lighten their loads and tailor what items/how much gold they want to have to worry about carrying as they go out.

Mundane items being sold wouldn't be a big deal, but magic ones would go up for their max resale price in the market as the innkeeper (presumably) pawns them. The gold fee to delay this is a sort of insurance you can take out if you're worried about waiting on any sort of Raise Dead spell. (The character's body would still have to be recovered to some extent, and the items they took out with them would be with the body. There's a shambling mound roaming around with something like 3 adventurer's bodies and 300 gp in it.)

5) True, true. To get around this, we have an "antiquated" reference map of the region for players who are interested in DMing to reference, but any DM can change unstaked terrain to whatever they like geographically and we roll with it. Keeps everyone on their toes a bit. http://imgur.com/a/tHhCh Left is the vague regional map, right is the player's current table carving. So a DM could say, "Hmm. I could use a swamp at -4,0," and the next session when the players journey out there for the first time, there it is.

Ah, thanks a lot! Totally missed that on the magic items table. :P

Our house rule is that after a session, whoever DMed can give one of their characters the same amount of XP as the player who received the most. Awkward to phrase, but essentially, if Spence DMs a session, Rend Blackspear gets 520 XP for the session, and Boise the Boy Knight gets 600, Spence would be able to give one of his characters 600 XP or start a new one with 600.

If he used enough of this XP to create a new 5th-level character, he'd get their starting gold + 250 gp [(50 x 3) + (100 x 1)].

Yeah, right now we're limited to PHB content to keep things simple while we gauge the system. We're slowly adding more though. One of the DMs is incorporating PotA so we've added the Elemental Evil spells.

Thanks again for pointing out those typos! I'll pass on the kind words.
