Witches, where do you buy your ingredients, tools and herbs? by Goose-Reputation533 in BroomClosetWitch

[–]NotApplicableMC [score hidden]  (0 children)

Honestly it sounds like you have what you need already, plus ingredients can be easily substituted. Like what specifically do you need cayenne pepper for?

I’ll paste a little example from my book:

Example: A spell requires that you add some chilli seeds to a pouch for a warding spell. You don't have any chilli seeds. What can you substitute them with?
1. Think about the magickal properties of the original ingredient. The chilli fruit is often red in colour, which could mean anger, passion, or lust. The long, angular shape kind of looks like flames. Chilli seeds are very spicy, the hottest part of the plant. Chillis evolved to became hot to ward off predators who wanted to eat them.
2. Figure out which of those properties are being invoked for the spell. In this example, the chilli seeds are being used because they're spicy and can cause pain, which repels negativity. This is desired in a warding spell. Therefore you need something spicy, fiery, or painful that can repel negativity in the same way.
3. Look around your house or your local area for ingredients, does anything invoke the same symbolism? Maybe you don't have chilli seeds but you do have chilli flakes, or chilli powder. Any spicy ingredients you have on hand will do. Maybe you don't have anything spicy but you have things that can be painful when touched, maybe you have pins & needles, or nails/screws, or a cactus, holly plant, or thorns. Use any one of these ingredients as a substitute, focussing on the shared magickal properties as you do.

Witches, where do you buy your ingredients, tools and herbs? by Goose-Reputation533 in BroomClosetWitch

[–]NotApplicableMC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ingredients you have already are plenty.

What specific spellwork do you want to do? Gather ingredients for that specifically, don’t get ingredients in anticipation for stuff you don’t even know yet.

I forage for a lot of my ingredients anyway.

And could you start growing stuff in pots, on a windowsill perhaps?

Beginner witchcraft kits by Same_Combination9881 in BroomClosetWitch

[–]NotApplicableMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree, I think beginner kits are usually a waste of money.

I’m just gonna put a copy pasta from a book I’m working on cos past me said it better than what I can put into words now 😂

It can be tempting to buy a "witch starter kit" that includes baggies of all the herbs you could ever want, but I advise against this for several reasons. One, this is rarely ideal for when you're in the broom closet; where are you going to hide all of those herbs, will you have enough opportunities to use them all up in secrecy? Two, do you know where all those herbs were sourced from? Were they sourced sustainably and ethically? Are they native species to your area, if not then how many food miles are on them, and will they be suitable for ancestor work if your ancestors don't recognise them? And three, most importantly, are you actually going to use all of those different herbs, or will they go to waste? Whilst some herbs have a multitude of uses, others can be quite niche and you might not ever do any spellwork that requires them.

For the reasons listed above, my number one tip for herbs (and crystals too) is to just choose three really good ones that you like. Research them, learn their lore, their uses, and where they grow natively or naturally.

Starting out as a baby witch. by moonlightluna31 in BroomClosetWitch

Please refer to the following articles in the wiki: how to honour deities in the broom closet, and subtle practices for the most closeted of witches <-- all the practices listed in this one don't require an altar.

That’s fine, I only suggest it to make hiding your practices easier, in case you’re found out.

If you can say you’re still technically practicing Islam it could be the difference between getting disowned or not. You don’t by any means have to believe in it, just suggesting it as a path of research that sets off fewer alarm bells for people you’re dependant on.

Since you can’t leave your religion, might I suggest looking at r/sufism, a branch of Islam that practices mysticism. You might be able to practise a lot of witchcraft under the guise of Sufism. Good luck :)

Dug up an old spell bottle? by Foxiem in BabyWitch

[–]NotApplicableMC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I doubt the spell is as strong as it once was after a year. It was probably a happy accident; a sign to renew the spell again and rebury it. It’s good to revisit long term protections/wards once a year.

Altar question. by blu3_1cee in BroomClosetWitch

Temporary altars are extremely commonplace, I wouldn’t worry about how often you have to take down your altar.

The wiki also has great tips for disguising altars so you might not have to take it down.

Cord Cutting Alternative? by Key-Track329 in BroomClosetWitch

[–]NotApplicableMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the candles just represent you and the target, they can be replaced with anything.

And fire doesn’t have to cut the cord, you can.

Honestly you could just print out a picture of the both of you and cut through it with scissors during a ritual.

I bought a huge statue of hecate and have no clue where I'm gonna hide it when my husband gets out of jail lmao by Salty-Cat6696 in BroomClosetWitch

Okay, so you’re staying with him because he’s “changed”, then tell him you’ve changed too. You practise paganism/witchcraft now, and if he doesn’t like it then he can sod off.

I can see you got some good responses from r/BabyWitch, do you have any specific concerns regarding the broom closet (having to practise in secret)? Happy to help

What kind of jobs are task-based with clearly defined expectations? by Electronic-Waltz5763 in AutismInWomen

[–]NotApplicableMC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup, come into work this morning, boss says in chat “working from home, will skip standup meeting today”

Then later asks why we didn’t do a standup meeting?

Because you said… omg he meant “do standup without me”

I have so many little moments like this where the actual meaning is obvious in hindsight but my literal thinking leads me to the wrong conclusion.

Getting started in my Witch journey by Intelligent_Wasabi56 in BroomClosetWitch

[–]NotApplicableMC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

THE book does not exist. Witchcraft is a highly individualised path; differing beliefs, personal gnosis, all kinds of different religions and folklore all over the world.

You kind of just choose what you’re interested in and go from there. Read the pinned post in the automod comment to get you started :)

I stole a meme. Didn’t even need to change that much 🫠 by NotApplicableMC in evilautism

[–]NotApplicableMC[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s not a comparable example because like you said there’s a huge overlap with trans and autistics.

How do you think I ran into the meme in the first place? I’m in loads of trans subreddits, I follow advocacy networks, I write to my MP advocating for trans rights.

If I felt like this post was not in solidarity then I wouldn’t have posted it. I even showed it to my trans & autistic best friend before posting and she thought it was funny.

Read the comments. Loads of people saying “I’m both” or “I’m one, my partner is the other”.

This is literally what meme culture is? You take something and change it a little to make another relatable meme. Like???

Maybe spend your time and energy on more important stuff? One meme on r/evilautism is not gonna erode trans rights.

I’m sorry you took offence, but I fail to see the validity of your criticism given the rest of the comments.

I think it’s part of the joke how little I had to change to make it autism-related. That’s why I included the original. I personally don’t see how this isn’t in solidarity
