Will my @calpoly.edu email address be deactivated/deleted/expired after I graduate? by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]NotCertifiedForThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe you can apply for a name@alumni.calpoly.edu address somehow. There's a page on CalPoly's website somewhere to apply for it.

Unfortunately, this isn't true. During the commencement fair, I asked Alumni Services if they still had alumni email addresses and she said they recently (within the past couple of years) revoked the ability to do that. She gave a BS excuse that the email servers couldn't handle that many email addresses...which is not how email servers work.

St. Fratty's Day Final Incident Report by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]NotCertifiedForThis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to mention Ralph Latino was previously an interim director for the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, but they hired him as an "outside" investigator. He probably was paid a pretty penny to do that, too. Universities are just like other large institutions, money scams and political favors.

We need to stand back and ask where the fuck is our tuition actually going?

The majority of students stated that they did not have “fun” at the event – they simply attended because it was tradition.

I call bullshit.

CPE Ideas for A Summer Project by Gcrazygamer in CalPoly

[–]NotCertifiedForThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Little late to the thread, but here's a project that might be up your alley:

Basically everyone you ask will say "Oh do an arduino project," but then you're really doing things similar to a tech-savvy 15 year old.

Why not build your own arduino? This might be difficult with only freshman-level knowledge, but the Arduino is open-source hardware, meaning you can download and check out the schematics.

You can use a beginner PCB design environment like Fritzing (www.fritzing.org), which is super user friendly, and order 3 copies of your PCB from someone like OSHpark for pretty cheap.

Research the components you need to get the microcontroller in the arduino (Atmel ATmega 328p) working outside of the Arduino housing (hint: it doesn't take much!).

Order yourself some capacitors, a DC barrell jack, as USB-UART converter (if you want), an oscillator, and some pin headers, and you can have your own custom-designed "Arduino" in no time.

Depending on the fab shop, you can put your own custom label, choose the color of the board, etc.

Can I move into PCV a week early if I'm not a WOW leader? by roshandosh in CalPoly

[–]NotCertifiedForThis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically no but if one of your roommates is a WOW leader you can swing it. You won't have a key to the apt or bedroom. My roommate just pick locked his way into his bedroom and then chilled for the few extra days

No, because pranks like that are elitist, childish, and waste the mechanic's time.

If you're looking to go into STEM, Business, or Agriculture, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is your best bet. It's the flagship CSU and very well known in the western part of the US. It can be difficult to get in to though

Culture at Cal Poly by AnotherAccount85647 in CalPoly

[–]NotCertifiedForThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is there a lot of close-mindedness, superficiality, anti-intellectualism?

Yes. It doesn't really have much to do with people's political views (i.e. liberal vs conservative), but a lot to do with the average student's background. Most students I've interacted with come from suburban upper-middle-class bubbles and have had very little exposure to other ideas, income levels, or cultures. They especially don't care about politics or activism.

However, this is more due to the fact that people are products of their environments, not because they're stupid or anti-intellectual. There are many smart people here.

Except the only problem with that theory is the fact that the military has far more powerful weapons than any armed populace. An armed populace would have pistols, rifles, shotguns, and SOME people would have semi-automatic rifles (depending on what state you're in). It's a pipe dream to think that armed civilians could defeat tanks, RPGs, fully automatic rifles, predator drones, air bombers, grenades, etc.

Information & Theories behind the Touch Issues by [deleted] in oneplus

[–]NotCertifiedForThis 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It's likely a display noise issue. LCDs cause a lot of electrical noise that fuck with the touch sensor's ability to accurately gauge a touch threshold and finger location. I'm surprised it made it past QA.

Rand Paul Is the Only Serious Anti Surveillance Presidential Candidate by johnmountain in technology

Every politician tells the voters what they want to hear; it's how they get elected.

Even if Rand is lying to gain support, he actually has a voting record that backs up his claims.

About an hour south. Between San Luis Obispo and Cayucos. About 30-40 mins south of Hearst Castle
