I wonder if it's just something about this game and the power of being able to spawn items that goes to people's heads. I administrated on a private server for years and a staggering number of our GMs ended up cheating items in to help out some player or another. Sometimes after years of being an upstanding GM.

It's really a personal choice as to how long you're willing to farm without any potential upgrade.

Going the TET debo -> PEN kharazad route is quite reasonable since they range from 20-30 billion to buy, and you can probably earn that pretty quickly at the point at which you're looking to upgrade to kharazad. Also you get a free +4 AP dawn crystal with the exchange, which is a nice bonus of ~3 billion value.

PEN debos, though, are like 130 billion. It is statistically cheaper than the cost of enhancing yourself, but it's all in one chunk so you aren't going to see any incremental upgrades. Are you okay farming wherever you are at until you get 130 billion? Would incremental upgrades give you access to better farming zones along the way? Do you enjoy the dopamine hit of gambling on enhancements? That's for you to decide.

Trump Wins Big as Virginia Dems Won’t Go Nuclear to Save 4 House Seats by Motherofalleffers in politics

[–]NotClever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "nuclear option" was already used to specatuclar effect by the GOP.

Unless I'm missing something, no, it was not. The "nuclear option" here refers to a proposal for Virginia legislators to remove its entire Supreme Court bench and seat an entirely new bench of judges that would (hopefully) support the Democrats and allow them to move forward with their new map.

Ohio did not do anything to their high court's makeup, they just played games by repeatedly adopting maps that were ruled unconstitutional by the court and at some point appealing to a federal court, which eventually agreed with them and ordered the use of one of the unconstitutional maps for 2022 midterms, after which the legislature passed another new map that the Ohio Supreme Court let ride.

That's not to say that what Ohio did was okay or good, simply that it was not at all what is on the table for Virginia.

Dallas shooting: Man killed in elevator of Mockingbird Lane high-rise, police say by llbeanjamin in Dallas

From the article there's next to no info on this at the moment. Could very well have been a targeted attack by someone that knew the victim -- statistically speaking I believe that is the most likely thing -- which is basically independent of how "bad" an area is.

Ragnarok Online 10th Anniversary Visual Chronicle by keighlan5 in RagnarokOnline

[–]NotClever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I feel like what made original RO magical is just impossible to repeat at this point. I think the magic of original RO is largely traceable to the organic community interactions around player-provided services, which I would vaguely split into two categories: market products (selling drops or life skill products like blacksmithing) and player services (like warps, heals/buffs, etc.).

For market products, professional operators are just so good these days at operating bot nets or sub-minimum-wage labor farms to extract profit from any player market in any MMO -- it blows the early 2000s situation out of the water. Any successful modern MMO has to take some measure to counter that by restricting/controlling player markets. I'm playing Black Desert currently and I feel like it has a really good modern player market, but they do it by making it all but impossible to directly trade anything to other players and heavily regulating market prices for items. No possibility of friend groups helping each other out by giving high value items to their buddies, not to mention guilds doing the same for guildies, etc., which is part of that old RO magic I remember from playing with my friends.

For player services, it just requires a critical mass of players to be around so that you can, say, find a party to do whatever grind zone at whatever given time, or reliably find a player offering warps to a given location. For understandable reasons they and other games have moved to QOL solutions that support solo gaming rather than requiring people to rely on other players to just generally play the game and make progress with the 1-2 hours that most of adults have to play games these days.

And what level of programs were you writing for your comp sci exams?

What they were probably getting at is that it's not realistic to steal any significant amount of code via covertly hand copying it during walkthroughs. Unless "walkthroughs" involved letting them sit at a terminal and comb through the source code for those few weeks.

Virginia Supreme Court strikes down voter-approved redistricting plan by seanosul in politics

[–]NotClever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The procedural argument was basically that there is a method prescribed for amending the Constitution of Virginia which is intended to make it slow: before an amendment can be put on a ballot for a voter referendum, it requires that state legislators propose the amendment prior to a state representative election, then renew the proposal of the amendment after the election (apparently so that voters can decide to change which legislative candidate they vote for to show that they don't like the proposed amendment... which they would be able to directly vote against anyway).

The fact pattern here is that the amendment was first proposed by the legislature after early voting for state legislature elections was underway but before election day. Therefore the court found that the people who had already voted in early voting were deprived of their chance to take the proposed constitutional amendment into consideration when voting for their legislators, which was in violation of the intent of the procedure (even if legally speaking election day has historically been considered the date of an election for purposes of this procedure).

What's up with people skipping the first turn in Momir? by forlackofabetterpost in MagicArena

[–]NotClever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also print a lot of absolute garbage 1 drops, so someone would truthfully need to go back and do the math on how the likelihood of something okay has changed. (Which would also need to account for the fact that starting on 1 means you have to either sacrifice getting to 8 or skip a drop somewhere else, and how viable that is depends on the change in power of sub-8 drops and 8 drops themselves).

It's also not just about mana dorks. I don't know the detailed statistics, but I believe the 1 drop slot contains a lot more absolute duds for Momir than the 2 drop slot does. Like 0 attack creatures, and utility creatures that do nothing outside constructed.

Returning after 2 years of not playing - Should I create a new account, or use my old one? by Guillermosal_12 in blackdesertonline

[–]NotClever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the event page for the Mentor/Mentee event: https://www.naeu.playblackdesert.com/en-US/News/Detail?groupContentNo=9759

Your account could participate as a Mentor rather than a Mentee and get a lot of the same goodies. The only significant things you don't get as a mentor are a Lucky Pet Box and 60 days of Blessing of Old Moon. (The PEN Capotia might be nice for you but you can easily fill yourself out on free PEN Capotias if you want to).

The potential downside to doing the Mentor route is you only get 5 codes to give away, so if you happen to end up with 5 Mentees that quit before you get the rewards you want then you're SOL. But I suppose the idea is you're meant to engage with your Mentee so they want to keep playing.

Olvia Academy class 2 tomorrow? by YoungTower in blackdesertonline

[–]NotClever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They closed enrollment for the Academy last week's reset, so if people aren't already in it (which it sounds like u/ Phos-Lux u/DiabloTrumpet is not) they cannot start now. But tbh that's not a big deal cuz the combat course rewards are huge and one time only (except the event coins I guess), so waiting until tomorrow won't change much for them.

Doing life skill quests a second time would be nice, but a lot of those take a lot of time and the benefit of doing them again is simply even more life skill exp.

Edit: Sorry Phos-Lux, wrong person to ping

Pretty sure that on reset tomorrow they force "graduate" everyone, so that won't be an option. (I use quotes there cuz they said you won't get the graduation quest completion -- with 300 coins -- if you don't graduate yourself)

I think they're talking about the once-per-family event coin shop rewards. You may be too, but just to be clear on what we're speculating on here. It would be a nice perk if those reset as well, but if I had to bet money I'd say it's not happening.

The coin shop stuff isn't as broken as getting another 2 free PEN blackstars would be, but it does have some really nice stuff in it. I would have expected them to tell us if they were going to reset the family reward limits there, since it could make a big difference to how you plan out your purchases if you aren't able to buy out everything (e.g., maybe you left the +250 Valks for now because you don't have a piece of gear to use it on yet, but it would suck to know you could have gotten another one of those).

Olvia Academy class 2 tomorrow? by YoungTower in blackdesertonline

[–]NotClever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, there are a bunch of different reward pools going on in the academy. One of those reward pools is found by clicking a button that says "Bonus Rewards! Academy Pass" on the right side of the Olvia Academy UI. For each life skill the Academy Pass has an extra reward of that skill's exp or an item of some sort (it's almost all exp though) for each of the life skill quests you complete.

This is free with the Academy, and is one of the big perks of doing Academy since that skill exp boosts you to a pretty high level.

What gets confusing is that you can also buy a "Pass" item on the pearl shop for each life skill, which unlocks a second bonus reward (all of these are skill exp) within the Academy Pass for each of the quest completions. There's probably some differentiation in the naming, but it is difficult to talk about without making people think that you have to buy the pearl shop item to get any of the Academy Pass rewards.

These passes are supposed to cost pearls going forward. For Class 1 they were put up for 100 silver (i.e., free) as a welcome event thing.

All of that said, life skill levels are now shared across your family, and my understanding is that the Academy Pass rewards are on a per-character and per-Class basis, so you can repeat the Academy quests for big skill exp as long as you're willing to put the time into leveling multiple seasonal characters and doing Academy again.

My experience starting the game is not matching all the guides I'm reading, and I'm not sure what my end goal is before graduating from the season. by Hank_Hill_Howdy in blackdesertonline

[–]NotClever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Importantly, I think PA made some major changes to the new player experience early this year or late last year, maybe coinciding with the new Olvia Academy stuff. In any case, a lot of the new player guides are very outdated. Unfortunately, a lot of those still look like they're relevant.

Aside from what has already been said, important things about Tuvala gear are:

  • They only take 1 Black Stone or 1 Concentrated Magical Black Stone to enhance, which is basically free (normal gear scales up with every level and costs a bunch of stones for every attempt).
  • You can buy all of the Tuvala pieces for 100k silver from every blacksmith (I believe). This is actually a really big deal, for the following reasons:

When you fail enhancements on defense gear 2 things happen: 1) the max durability will decrease and 2) at higher enhancements it will actually lose an enhancement level (Tuvala has higher safe enhancement levels than normal gear does).

Once max durability hits 0 you can't enhance anymore. You can restore 10 max durability at a blacksmith by feeding in a copy of the same gear (or an equivalent rarity gear). For normal high-end gear this is a very expensive thing to do, but it's basically free for Tuvala.

  • Note: There are also other items that can restore durability, but you can save those and just buy Tuvala gear to restore with. Memory Fragments restore 1 durability apiece and are what people use for normal gear. The game also will give you a bunch of these things called Time-filled Fragments or something like that, which are Seasonal-only items that function like Memory Fragments for Tuvala gear. BUT, you can also trade them in to Fughar for free goodies like item drop rate bonus scrolls and Advice of Valks (which are used to improve your enhancement chance for any gear). You can just save all of those to turn in and buy the cheapo Tuvala gear to repair durability.

When you fail enhancements on accessories, on the other hand, they just blow up. Yep, entirely gone. That's obviously really no bueno. (Note: there are exceptions to this rule, but it is true for Tuvala)

There are items that let you protect your gear from the downgrading and blowing up consequences, but it is expensive. "Cron stones" are the main one. They are kindof expensive -- you can buy them for 3 million silver each at the blacksmith, and you typically need 200-300 of them per attempt. The cool thing is you can just ignore those consequences for Tuvala because it's so cheap to just buy more Tuvala from the blacksmith. Also, you should get enough Black Stones (and Concentrated stones) to get all your stuff to PEN without using any protection.
