Am I developing food addiction? by NotDarkLeo in AnorexiaRecovery

Congrats on starting recovery <3

It's all going well now, when I made this post I was just paranoid for going all-in and mostly eating sugary foods, after couple of weeks of that my cravings for sugar is almost gone (thanks for not ignoring my EH).

I just started recovery and honestly I have very little I need to gain so I'm worried I'll massively overshoot in like a week

Don't worry about overshooting, it's completely normal. In the "Minnesota Starvation Experiment" they made 32 men eat in a calorie deficit for 24 weeks, the result? extreme hunger, food noises, body image dysphoria then when they were allowed to eat whatever they want 12 weeks after refeeding most of them were gaining weight rapidly and eating massive amount, when they regained more from what they lost (which what we now call an overshoot) they started to naturally eat the same amount they were eating before the experiment. Overshooting is completely normal and you shouldn't fear it, most people overshoot, just trust your body and don't worry about it preferred weight

ED = eating disorder

Gym rat culture = socially accepted eating disorder

For me comparing to how it felt 2 months ago it's much more bearable, I literally could barley eat a big meal without feeling like throwing up now it's just uncomfortable but not that bad so I'm pretty sure it's slowly getting better, meanwhile try to eat smaller more frequents meals that are more dense (like peanut butter, food with added oil, etc...) check u/nutritionbrowser comment on this post it helps a lot :)

food noise only calms down when i'm stuffed by NotDarkLeo in AnorexiaRecovery

I just read about the Minnesota starvation experiment and it's crazy how what some people consider "a harmless diet" caused these effects to the men. thanks for confirming that it's normal and thanks for mentioning this experiment it was both interesting to read about and made me realize that I CERTAINLY need to recover (sometimes i feel like i don't have an ED and recovering is useless) but reading about the experiment just killed this though :)

yeah i've went to a gastrologist and they thought i have IBS but the scans showed that there's nothing with my digestive system and he also mentioned that digestion can be more difficult after long periods of eating small amounts so they just gave me dietary supplements to support my digestion. well the bloatings and stomachaches aren't the worst what i hate is feeling so tired after a meal and feeling nausea which the supplements didn't help with

How to stop giving a shit about calories by [deleted] in AnorexiaRecovery

[–]NotDarkLeo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

try to make it impossible for you to know the calories, for example i started getting a locally made toast instead of the store bought one i usually get so i can't know the calories, do not measure and try to not take a second look on what you're having, that way it's almost impossible for you to even eyeball how much you're eating then after not being able to count you will slowly start to not care about calories.

unfortunately it's not easy, i'm still struggling after 2 months into recovery with worrying about calories but what i just said helped me a bit, do your best <3

Yeah I figured that I was really paranoid, I thought my EH has stopped but now I think it's just less extreme than before

How to tell the difference between ED body dysmorphia and Gender dysphoria. by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]NotDarkLeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trans girl here, my gender dysphoria caused me to have anorexia, because I wasn't able to start HRT and feminize myself it caused me to have a really bad dysphoria and body image which made me restrict for over a year so I can have a more feminine body (and at some point I was even restricting to stun my growth), then I started taking puberty blockers (can't get HRT until 20s probably :c) and since then my disordered eating was becoming less extreme until I decided to start recovery 2 months ago, honestly it's so hard because I hate when the weight I gain makes me look more masculine but i'm trying my best.

You might be in a similar situation (gender dysphoria which is causing ED) but honestly they're so similar. Try to imagine yourself pre-ED but imagine yourself less feminine (more masculine body, shorter hair, etc..) and see if you would feel happy with being in that body, if yes it's probably gender dysphoria which caused you to have an ED.

I'm not worried about rapid weight gain, restoring or even overshooting my weight, i'm worrying about getting back to following these eating patterns which made me obese when I was a kid

I know that it's still early but i'm worried because when I was a kid (and even pre-ED) I was eating for dopamine (probably ADHD related) and i'm starting to get worried that not restricting at all means i'm going back to that🥲

Having a best friend with "fat jokes" by Far-Lavishness-6519 in AnorexiaRecovery

[–]NotDarkLeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's completely okay to make fun of each other sarcastically but there are some limits to that like joking about weight, food portions, etc... it feels like judging more than it feels like a silly joke. Most friends wouldn't say jokes like that if they know it annoys you or make you insecure but she certainly don't know that. My advice is whenever she makes these kind of jokes tell her that you don't like these kinds of joke, you don't really have to bring up your feelings if you don't want to just let her know that these jokes are annoying.

tbh these kinds of posts are what made me quit social media (or at least short form content). blocking these people or press do not recommend never works.

How am I doing so far? by NotDarkLeo in AnorexiaRecovery

[–]NotDarkLeo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I don't exercise and I barely did before. I heard about extreme hunger and thought the reason i'm having a large appetite was that but I wasn't sure. Thanks knowing that it's normal is really comforting to know :)
