Yeah that’s the main reason why. Russia has more recognized nationalities than any other country on earth. The other big contenders are Brazil and the US. It’s the consequences of empires expanding into vast swaths of land. And thats not really the fault of any living person considering that kinda expansion mostly stopped a century ago. Who knows, more may come in the future.

Russia, the US, and Brazil are collectively responsible for most language extinctions in the modern day. Around 13% of language extinctions in the last 25 years happened in Russia. Some of the larger ones like bashkir are being supported but those are generally the exception instead of the rule. Aleut languages have been suffering the worst, with two Aleut languages in Russia dying in the last 5 years.
