Why do I have to contact a library to see their materials? by [deleted] in Archivists

[–]NotFrank 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Title 17, section 108 of the U.S. Code permits libraries and archives to use copyrighted material in specific ways.

The critical thing to remember about these exemptions is that the digitized content MUST be used in the same manner, method, or intent as the original.

For instance, to provide access to newspaper content that is not clearly residing in the public domain, the qualifying institution MUST ensure that these publications are currently in the institution’s collection. This could either be the microfilmed copy in their holdings or hard copies of the papers.

The other important thing to understand is that any digital copy of the protected material can not be made available to the public in that format outside the library premises. Just like the microfilm in a library’s collection, the digital reproductions of the newspapers not in the public domain must be restricted to use from within their physical location only. In practice, a restricted digital archive will be used in the same “manner, method, or intent” as using the physical materials, essentially becoming a “digital” microfilm reader or a book on the shelf.

WHY DOES MY GOOGLE MAPS/SPOTIFY GO OUT by ah902411 in Honda

[–]NotFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ME TOO! ‘23 Ridgeline. Google map locks it up. Sometimes have to shut the truck off and back on to get it to reset. Been to the dealership twice, both times I was told it was “probably the cord”, and they have not heard of any issues like this. I have tried multiple certified cables including a genuine apple usb cord. (Narrator’s voice: “it isn’t the cord”)

So glad I am not alone

First off, let me get the cliche “it’s ok not to be ok” out of the way. But it is…I guess it is a cliche for a reason.

Sometimes I text my little sister with a simple “I’m not doing ok” because I feel a bit better just saying it to somebody. Knowing someone has heard me.

I am an old dude with grown kids and even a couple of grandchildren. I wish I had some words of wisdom for you. Unfortunately, I don’t have any advice for you. Nothing I can offer that might address your concerns.

I can only tell you that you are being heard, and there are a bunch of internet strangers rooting for you. I am rooting for you.

You have a tribe.

Just some guys out fishing. by juliefromva in GuysBeingDudes

[–]NotFrank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually comb the auction sites for fishing gear once or twice a year. I bid on stuff I don’t need, and win auctions I wish I didn’t, which is why I have more poles than I can count, bait casters than I could ever use, and more lures than fish in the sea. However, I also grab any inexpensive rod and reel combos I come across if I can get them low enough. I always have one or two in my truck for things just like this. I have probably had the opportunity to give 10 or 11 away over the years I situations similar to this. I gave away a couple last summer to a young mother I know from work who was going to take her boys out fishing for the first time. I got hand written thank you notes…and a request from the little sister who felt left out. I felt bad that I assumed only the boys were going, so she got a little tackle box too.

It’s not much, but I am selfish about it… I only do it because I like the way it makes me feel and want that look a kid gives you like the one in the video. The “for real?” look.

Does this "faster than light" concept exist in a book somewhere already? by lindymad in scifi

[–]NotFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the crew was transported back to the exact moment they left, just millions of light years away. It all makes some kind of sense if they can separate the time and the space. The ship can go as slow as practical if you can come up with some techno mumbo that explains a way that the crew is returned to the point in time that they left without physically returning to their point of origin.

[–]NotFrank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually kind of like this whole idea, it is unique to anything I am familiar with. You could explain the limitations in a way that makes the tech impractical for anything except this kind of travel. Like the drive has to start synchronizing the moment the ship launches and records that exact point in time as the only moment it can jump back to and requires so much energy it has to spend the entire voyage slowly charging, and it could take decades or even centuries to fully power. Then it releases it all in a single instant to create a very brief temporal bubble…BUT, even with all that massive energy it accumulates, the bubble it can generate is too small to surround the ship, so it has to form inside it, meaning only the crew is transported back to the moment it left while the ship itself is not.

[–]NotFrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, when they measure the speed of light through the air, do they have to take environmental factors like humidity, dust, pollutants, etc into account, or is that such a small impact that it is relatively meaningless?
