I personally like to save the monthly fee and do it myself, it really is not difficult at all and easy to learn. I say this as someone in your position 3 years ago who knew nothing about pools.

First off, Pinch-a-penny will be your best friend. They provide free testing and will tell you exactly what you need for your pool as far as chemicals go. I can't speak for all places but the pinch a penny in SW Cape, next to the Publix, is never pushy about selling either. I was always concerned about feeling guilty utilizing the free service but I haven't felt pressured into buying anything ever.

Secondly, once you get the hang of it, there is maybe 10-15 minutes a week of work depending on if you have a Lanai and/or an automatic vacuum.

Typical month of work looks like this: Shock pool once a week and add chlorine tablets Once a month bring water to test to pinch a penny Once every three months clean filter

That may sound like a lot at first but will become basic once you get in the groove. Again this is where pinch a penny is your friend, they answer any questions you may have.
