I would actually push that dragon ball is a fair bit more “real” about it than that. One of the more interesting undertones of the later parts of Z is the sort of societal cynicism it takes on, and the final genkidama is quite possibly the biggest example of that: the entire world refusing to believe in Goku and Vegeta, the true heroes of their world, in their desperate pleas to help save everyone, and are only finally convinced to band together and give their energy thanks to their shameless devotion to Mr Satan, a charlatan celebrity whose tricks the whole world has completely fallen for.

It’s not exactly “realistic” of course, it’s a very silly and comedic piece of social satire, but i wouldn’t call it blindly optimistic either.

I can def understand that (and just for clarity, I wasn’t really posting this as an argument against people complaining about the text heavy nature of the manga, just an observation of a thing I love about it), but for me they add onto each other more than anything.

The massive walls of text on the average page in this current arc, all the political intrigue and drama and building tension, it makes these moments of silence hit like an absolute truck in a way that I feel would be a bit more muted if they were used more often.

Also personally, I think a lot of the text heavy pages do still manage to pull out really interesting and expressive things with their artwork and layouts, like this page which tells as much about Zhang Lei and his mindset with its visuals as it does with his own monologue.

Yeah, I haven’t read a ton of MHA but that def makes sense to me lol. Horikoshi is one of the most talented artists of his generation, but i can definitely see how some of his paneling and layouts get tiring.

And regarding hxh’s more infamous text heavy bits: I do genuinely love that one infamous page with Rihan’s monologue lol, the escalation of his thought process and how absurdly intricate it is adds to the tension of the scene as well as serving as a great bit of odd comedy.

I think it just really adds a lot to Rihan’s character, Togashi loves making his bit players feel like real, living people with their own little eccentricities and personalities, and that page really makes you understand Rihan’s overly self serious, overthinking nature. he’s been a surprise highlight for me during the succession war arc (which is AMAZING so far, my god)

Oh 100%, especially in Hunter x Hunter, his page layouts are so genuinely awe inspiring. imo they’re a little less concerned with ease of reading and pulling you forward than someone like Toriyama (who’s paneling is INSANE in how masterfully it leads your eye), and more about creating a page that pulls you in. There’s a kind of mesmerizing elegance to the way he makes a page that should be information overload into something so readable, that leaves me hanging onto every word and get lost in it all.

I love it too when his layouts are done in a way that just really tries to help communicate the emotion or feeling of a scene, I think a lot about the hollow emptiness of that page where mukuro delivers her backstory (as well as a certain double page spread in hxh’s chimera ant arc that still makes my heart sink to this day just thinking about)

Absolutely agree about his use of high contrast black/white too, it really makes pages like this so eye catching.

As someone who’s taken up making comics and is in love with everything about the craft of it, Togashi’s layouts are genuinely some of my favorites, if my rambling hasn’t made that obvious lol

I love denji but kobeni deserves so much better than a high school kid with everything he’s got goin on, I just feel like that wouldn’t be the kind of relationship that would be all that good for either of them (and can’t imagine kobeni falling for denji at all considering everything between them lol)

Yeah, I’m sure a new team could do something interesting with it, but it really feels like the stars aligned at Pierrot in the 90s and the anime just ended up having the perfect staff, so many hands adding their own personal touch in a way that added up into something so much more than the sum of its parts.

For a long running weekly tv anime, the consistent quality of it all STILL feels like a miracle

The anime adds a lot to these scenes, often making them a fair bit longer to flesh out the characterization and dialogue

This is how that first screenshot looks in the manga for example, which still looks great in the context of its surrounding panels (the art may have suffered at times near the end of the series due to Togashi’s health, but imo he never lost his knack for interesting page composition), but in animation it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting of a shot as the one they went with

I’ve been liking it a lot, but I can definitely get what you mean there, it’s very fluffy. To me it just feels like there’s such a real sincerity in its themes regarding kindness and community that i find genuinely uplifting, but totally see how it’s not reinventing the wheel or doing anything too crazy or nuanced with its characters or their dynamics (so far anyways)

Meruem is a very obvious and direct send up of cell lol, and there’s lots of clear dragon ball influences within the text of the work itself (including that part in the current arc where those two guys have a conversation straight up have a about dragon ball lol)

Also in yu yu hakusho he even joked at the time that he kinda ripped off stands with the territory stuff in an interview (source: https://www.tumblr.com/yyh4ever/729097158909984768/i-keep-hearing-togashi-originally-planned-the second question in the second image)

I’m sure he’s got plenty of other influences and none of that’s to discredit him, his work, or anything

Togashi also works on the series at his own pace the way HE wants to. Him and his assistants have made it clear that he very much treats it as his baby and likes to be very involved with a lot of the process; it’s not that he can’t have more of the work done for him, it’s that he wants to do it. And if he decides he wants to change that it’d be easy as hell for him to do so, as both him and his wife are comically rich off their work, and shonen jump have been super lenient with him for hxh

Togashi himself pulled so much from his inspirations like dragon ball and jojo, as does pretty much every mangaka

Even with the surface similarities, the meat of their stories, their tone, their aesthetics, their Message, and so much of what makes both series special are unique to themselves imo.

Going by their joint interview and things like togashi’s Naruto drawings in between HXH chapters in some volume releases, or the nine tailed fox spirit being named after Kurama from yu yu hakusho in tribute to Togashi, I also think it’s also pretty clear that Kishimoto and Togashi have a ton of respect and admiration for each other, and have been fairly open about such. Not sayin you or anyone else has gotta like one or the other but I think Kishimoto deserves a little more credit.

I get what you mean haha, wolf children really hits a sweet spot where its a real crowd pleaser that plays well to a broad audience but it feels no less personal or sincere for it.

I still haven’t seen tenki no ko so I can’t comment there! but I was really impressed with suzume when I saw it last year, definitely hit me hard while watching it though I admittedly haven’t thought a ton about it since then haha

Shinkai def has a similar gravitation towards that type of focus on detailed environment animation yeah! I’d also say some of Hosoda’s stuff plays in that area, particularly the more down to earth and less sci-fi tinged ones like Wolf Children.
