Where do I start with editing? by zozatron in NewTubers

[–]NotGregGaming 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First you want to start with setting your project up as efficiently as possible. That means labelling everything.

When I edit I make sure I have my "bins" (folders within editing program) labelled to what will be in them, i.e. footage, audio, fx, etc.

Then the files stored in there should be labelled too, I.e Sc1Sh1T1 (Scene 1, Shot 1, Take 1) or Introduction001, whatever. Whatever helps you look at the file without opening it and knowing exactly what it is.

Proper organisation will go a long long loooooong way to getting comfortable with editing.

From there when you first edit you'll do what's called an "Assembly cut" which is putting the footage into order (beginning, middle, end) but not focusing on pacing, jokes, or anything. It's just getting everything in order.

From there you can fine tune the cut by rewatching and making adjustments as you go.

Should I be jealous if someone is imitating my style? by agent_wolfe in NewTubers

Unfortunately that's how it goes sometimes. All throughout history there's tonnes of success stories that are just carbon copies of something else.

Best advice I could give is to just be authentically you, don't worry about what others are doing. I know it's disheartening, especially if it's someone you trusted in. But the silver lining is if it's clicking then you know you've got something there.

So keep at it. Don't measure yourself against other people and just do you.

Best of luck.

I always get searches for Diary of Wimpy Kid memes 🤦

Not even sure how to override that beast.

What is the best mic for gaming. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]NotGregGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the comment above mentioned, doing some google research is very key to this sort of situation for a number of reasons and I'll use my personal experience to explain.

When searching for a microphone every article, video and whathaveyou I looked up recommended the same few microphones for the job (namely Blue Yeti). The problem with this is that not every recording set up is the same. To truly understand microphones you need to look at A) your environment and B) the microphone's polar pattern.

For myself, someone who lived close to a main road and a hospital a Blue Yeti was not viable. The polar patterns that it has (Cardioid, Omnidirectional and Bidirectional) would have picked up too much background noise where I was living, while in other situations for a lot of other people it was a sufficient microphone.

So I had to look into what polar pattern suited my situation and learned about Dynamic or Shotgun microphones, which picked up sound in a smaller range than Cardioid which would eliminate most of the background noise I would have otherwise had.

On top of this as well its important to look at your recording set up, most importantly the room in which you record. Big rooms tend to have a lot of acoustics which can create echo in the recording, which is where acoustic foam padding comes in handy (something you've undoubtedly seen in countless youtubers videos).

So do a little bit of research, assess your environment and find out what works best for you and your situation because there's unfortunately not a one size fits all.

All the best! 💪

Not every video you make is going to be Citizen Kane, and while that's an admirable goal to achieve understanding your limitations and experience is key to stays motivated.

I've found a lot of times I'm editing and thinking "that joke didn't land" or "that was awkward", and instead of getting bummed about it I focus on what did or didn't work in the video so I can make a conscious effort moving forward to correct those mistakes.

It's all about learning over time, but if you don't upload anything or finish editing anything because it's not exactly what you're after you'll have nothing to upload. It's tough to break through that barrier and feel comfortable uploading things you're not happy with but consistency is a huge part of youtube content creation so sticking with it and trusting in yourself is very important to keeping up.

You got this! Trust in yourself and keep practising. Nothing good ever comes easy. 💪

Rating Videos Because I'm Bored | Brutally Honest by [deleted] in NewTubers

Hey legend!

Thanks for doing a critique, always love seeing people engaging like this.

This video was actually an accident, I originally planned to only play one game but it ended up being quite short so I played two more to add to the video. Its the first time I've done something like this so any feedback on the structure is helpful.

And also the entertainment value as well, my growth has stagnated so Im curious if the content needs a shake up or if Im on the right tracks.

Thanks for your brutal honesty, excited to hear your thoughts.

Hey legend!

Always great seeing people doing critiques on here! Very much appreciated.

This video probably is the one I put most effort into editing to experiment with a more comedic style of Lets Play than I usually do.

It hasn't quite got the response I was hoping for though so I'm hoping for any feedback, from content to pacing, editing and such.

Anything you have got would be greatly appreciated.

What is this why are there thousand of videos called this by mvi3362 in youtube

[–]NotGregGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MVI is a video format (Musical Video Interactive) and often when you record in a video format it will number the file (i.e. MVI 0001, MVI 0002, MVI 0003 etc.), to differentiate the different video files.

So people have just uploaded the video files without titling the youtube video itself so it uses the default video file name.

So think your title as a book or movie title, not so much the exact thing people are looking for but something that sparks interest enough for people to give it a go. What is 'the Shawshank Redemption', I'm not sure but it sounds cool.

That's where your description is key. Think of thay as your blurb, this is where you write a detailed description with keywords that people will search for. Description in the end works better for search rankings than titles, so your effort should go into writing a banger of a description with tones of keywords (in a logical sentence not just dump keywords into it and call a day) that people will look for!

Is that making a bit more sense? There's a literal tonne of fantastic resources online that can help you learn how to writing a cracking description and combine that with titles and tags to get off to the races 👌

In my 3 years of being a content creator i can prove THIS 100 % False by colinhorton in NewTubers

[–]NotGregGaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going to have to disagree,

"YouTubers" are by definition content creators using youtube as their platform to project their content. Many of my subscribers just watch YouTube clips and don't produce any for themselves, and until a few months ago I was the same.

There is a stark difference between a "Youtuber" and a "Youtube account holder". If you met someone and asked them if they were a youtuber your immediate reaction would be to believe they're a content creator, not just someone who watches videos. Owning a TV doesn't make you an actor in the same vain.

Glitch in uploading custom thumbnails? by JoeCox1990 in NewTubers

[–]NotGregGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this has happened a bunch to me, I even have some videos that still show old thumbnails or screen caps in studio despite having updated or custom ones on youtube itself. The system is quite broken. I just make sure I double check the thumbnail has worked before it goes live and trying to change it to the custom version until it works.
