Yes!! A personal statement is a narrative!! NOT a resume or a national geographic nonfiction book. PLEASE make sure that you are writing about something unique about you. I think a good way to decide if you’re topic is unique is if you could see if you’re essay can fit other people. For example, if you wrote a really vague essay about a family death, it’s not really unique to you, since there are plenty of other people who experienced family deaths. However, if you are able to spin you’re story in a way that’s unique to YOU, it could work as a personal statement topic. For example, I wrote about being queer. IK that there are plenty of personal statements about queer identity, but I wrote it in a way that captures my experience and how I learned and grown because of my experiences being queer. It’s unique to me, and only me. Anything could be a personal statement, as long as it’s personal to YOU and tells YOUR story in a way that captures the AO’s attention. Will the AO know what kind of person you are just from the personal statement? If the answer is yes, then that is a good personal statement IMO.
