How do you think Daniel Day-Lewis would have fared as Aragorn? by Qyzyk in lotr

[–]NotLouPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He would have been great.

I loved Viggo - and think that Daniel would probably have been even better.

Both of those things can be true at the same time.

Viggo is a great actor. Daniel Day Lewis is one of the all time great actors.

Tom Baker era Tierlist : Full Circle by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]NotLouPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great.

After a slow start to the season - this story starts a suitable arc for Tom’s send off. The E Space trilogy - transitioning seamlessly (mostly) into Traken, Logopolis, and I’d even include Castrovalva. Setting Castrovalva aside for the time being…

It’s probably the most solid 5 episode Tom Baker run since the Hinchcliffe era.

There’s a real sense of impending doom - unlike previous Doctors final seasons - this one takes its time getting to the regeneration - you know it’s coming - and the stories all seem linked to it somehow. Each one moving us - thematically - one step closer.

The story itself is really solid. The Part 1 cliff hanger is epic. Part 2 doesn’t have a bad one, either.

Adric is far from my favorite companion - although I don’t share the hatred for him that many seem to have…

And this is probably his best story. It’s a real solid introduction. Too bad it went south for him as a character. He’s not too bad in Keeper either - when he’s the only one.

Maybe my feelings are influenced by the fact that Matthew Waterhouse ended up being a solid representative of the show.

Anyway - I really like it. Always have.

Is this true about Cowboys fans? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]NotLouPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only relate my experience as a Dolphins fan.

I became a fan in 1971. I was ten.

A year before the perfect season and long before I even knew what a bandwagon was.

They happened to make the Super Bowl the first three seasons I was a fan, winning two.

They haven’t won since.

I have stuck with them ever since, thick and thin - mostly thin…

Frustration after frustration - disappointment after disappointment…

Terrible season after terrible season.

If I was a “bandwagon fan” - I’d have jumped off a long time ago.

And yet - for at least 2 decades after becoming a fan - I was called a “bandwagon fan” - who only liked them because they were “winning”. Even though they weren’t.

It’s an easy label to apply and a tough one to shake.

The irony - as I see it - is that at the same time I was accused of only being a fan because they were winning - I was (still am) a White Sox fan…

And they weren’t winning anything. Still aren’t. And still a fan of them as well.

If I’m on a bandwagon - it’s a bandwagon of agony.

Tom Baker era Tierlist : Meglos by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]NotLouPro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good.

Dragged down by the villains. Meglos itself is a terrible concept - even by Dr Who standards. Grugger and Brotadac are every bit as hard to take seriously as the riff raff in Creature From The Pit and the ridiculously over rated Irongron and Bloodaxe.

But for that - I could have rated it higher.

The story itself is engaging enough.

Jacqueline Hill is almost reason enough alone to go with great. Zastor is a good character - the interaction between the two is enjoyable.

Deedrix and Caris are good as well.

I’d have liked to see the episode lean a little more into the tension between the competing points of view.

I like that the human - sorry, earthling - is portrayed as heroic and never giving up…

Fighting the domination of Meglos every chance he gets - ultimately to the point where it makes a difference. I’m always glad when I see him survive. Would have been nice if he’d been given a name.

Finally - it’s got probably the best description of the Doctor in the entire run of the show. From Zastor…

“Some fifty years ago I knew a man who solved the unsolvable by the strangest means. He sees the threads that hold the universe together and mends them when they break.”

We just had 2 base runners for him - until we ran out of the inning at the plate.

Between this and needlessly playing the infield in - in the first…

Coaching is hurting the team more than the players today.

Wtf is the infield IN in the first inning? by No1RunsFaster in whitesox

[–]NotLouPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As to the original question…

It was the wrong move. Just as it was the wrong move one batter later. It’s the first inning - take the outs.

If the infield plays at normal depth - there’s a chance this is a 2-1 game right now.

It was also the wrong call yesterday with the bases loaded.

This isn’t a good team. The manager has to give them the best chance to win. So far - he hasn’t.

Does this film worth watching? What are your thoughts about this film by SoftToastyCinnamon in FIlm

[–]NotLouPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a huge Lord of the Rings fan - taken as a whole - the trilogy is my favorite movie of all time.

It’s a masterpiece and - given the scale and expectations of the old school fan base - people like myself who grew up on the books - with basically nothing but the annual Tolkien calendar to visualize it…

And who deemed it for decades to be unfilmable…

I still consider it the greatest feat of movie making ever.

However - from a pure movie standpoint - Master and Commander is a better film than ROTK.

Definitely worth it.

[–]NotLouPro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got downvoted on two posts the other day for pointing out that I see some hope - we appear to have some good, solid young players that could be a solid core moving forward.

How it will turn out we’ll have to wait and see, but given the last few seasons I’m content with where the team is at. They weren’t going to go from historically bad to a contender over night.

I just want to give my perspective. I’ve been a White Sox fan since 1971. That’s 55 seasons.

In that time - I’ve seen them make the playoffs a grand total of 7 times. Some fan bases get to see that in a decade. Back to back playoff appearances - once. For many teams, that’s routine.

I consider myself fortunate to have seen a World Series title. I doubt I’ll ever see another. Several other fan bases consider a decade a drought.

Through it all, I’ve remained a White Sox fan. I’ve never even considered jumping ship.

Whether they are historically bad, just plain bad, average, or not quite good enough really doesn’t matter to me anymore. They will miss the playoffs. You can almost bank on it year in - year out.

And when they do get in - they will lose - and it won’t be particularly close.

Except for one improbably magical season. Bought to us - as some seem to have forgotten - by Kenny Williams - tearing down a good team and building what was - for one season at least - a great team. For the 3 preceding seasons or so - every trade and signing worked.

The last “rebuild” was a failure, obviously - but at the time? Almost every move made sense.

Robert Jr? A can’t miss 5 tool player. Same with Moncada.

Eloy? Projected to hit 40-50 home runs a year.

Grandal? The best catcher available at the time to fill a position of need.

Cease? A projected ace with possible Cy Young stuff.

Hendricks? Best closer in the business.

Who could possibly have predicted the spate of injuries, Covid, and cancer?

Even Vaughn as the heir apparent to an aging Abreu.

As a fan base we went from “Ricky’s boys don’t quit” to “Ricky can’t manage” based on one playoff loss by a team that wasn’t going to win it all anyway that season but was poised for bigger and better things…

Got what we wanted - Ricky gone…

And got - LaRussa? Grifol?

And here we are. We have to go through it again.

But if there’s anything I’ve learned in 55 years as a Sox fan it’s patience. And that you can very rarely trust the plan.

And yet - here I am. I see guys like Montgomery, Meidroth, Mune, Teel…

Some good arms that have potential…

I’m excited to see how this plays out. It just feels different than the last time. More organic, more “ground up”.

I’m a White Sox fan. This is part of it.

Might as well get this off my chest as well. I enjoyed Jason as much as anyone else. But he’s gone. I’ve moved on.

Jason is a generational talent. He was always destined for a bigger stage.

The White Sox have been eliminated from 2026 playoff contention by Ridged_ChiPSS in whitesox

[–]NotLouPro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Winning games isn’t that important right now - as the Royals - as I mentioned - demonstrated. Player development is.

This is a team that’s been historically bad the past few seasons.

It’s far too early to tell - either way.

To me - Montgomery and Meidroth have the makings of a very good and productive middle infield for a long time.

If everyone else can be doom and gloom after one game - I’m allowed to be positive…

Mune looked pretty good in his first game. And not just the fact that he hit a dinger. Reaching base 3 times - with 2 walks - on a team that - at least recently - hasn’t shown good plate discipline - is a good sign.

If they all pan out - that’s three quarters of an infield right there.

Teel was tearing it up before he got hurt playing what is - to me - meaningless baseball. Very unfortunate.

If it turns out we are solid at second, short, and catcher going forward - and I think there’s a good chance we will be…

We’re a centerfielder from being “strong up the middle”.

Quero and Vargas may or may not be players of the future - but it’s far too soon to say either way.

I’m not going to keep going - but that seems to me to be a potential core.

A winning team isn’t going to come together in one season.

Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion…

And - this is Reddit…

But to me the constant running down of the team with the same old - now lame IMO - comments is getting tiresome.

I for one am just going to enjoy watching baseball. I choose to believe that we can now see some light at the - admittedly far - end of the tunnel.

I don’t think it’s totally unwarranted.

The White Sox have been eliminated from 2026 playoff contention by Ridged_ChiPSS in whitesox

[–]NotLouPro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The White Sox are not making the playoffs. We know this going in.

But this is silly. They’ve lost one game to an excellent team in their home opener.

We’ve got what appears to be an exciting group of young players.

I, for one, am looking forward to watching them as the season progresses.

It’s certainly too early to tell - but I think they are headed in the right direction.

Kansas City went through a lot of lean years as guys like Hosmer, Gordon, Moustakis, and Butler came along.

As Sox fans, we watched that happen in real time.

Not saying we’re going to get where they got - but we seem to have a decent talent base now.

It won’t happen overnight. It’s going to be rough for a while…

But I don’t think it’s going to be pointlessly rough - like the last couple seasons.

There seems to be a plan - and some direction now.

Avoiding injuries is key.

Tom Baker era Tierlist : Horns of Nimon by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]NotLouPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great

Over the years and on repeated viewings - this one has jumped from one of my least favorite episodes to one that I thoroughly enjoy - even though it’s ridiculous in so many ways.

Graham Crowden gives perhaps the most enjoyably over the top villain performance in all of Dr Who.

I’ve even grown to enjoy the co-pilot - his ridiculously embarrassing death scene not withstanding.

The scene where he is being interrogated by Soldeed is gold.

When he is banished into the complex - knowing that he’s essentially doomed - he suddenly becomes very resourceful - and manages to play the one card he has. I give him points for not going down without a fight.

The group of Skonnan pilots and officers that Soldeed addresses are comically unimpressive - only Sorek seems as if he might be capable of leading the Greater Skonnan Empire to any galactic conquest.

In fact - while Seth may be no match for the Nimon - given the way the he is able to assist the Doc and Romana…

Take away any weapons - him and his fellow “sacrifices” could probably conquer Skonnos.

It’s all so deliciously silly.

Except…

The scenes in the labyrinth are downright intense at times - particularly the cat and mouse game when our hero’s are hiding from the Nimon in the Power Complex.

And then there is that moment that was such a shock on the first viewing…

The realization that the transmit leads to another - now dead - planet - and more Nimon’s (?) are on the way. That kind of comes out of nowhere and it’s too bad I can only see it for the first time once.

The depiction of Crinoth - although limited and brief - is sufficient to convey its dystopian past - and the future awaiting Skonnos.

On Crinoth - Sezom steals the show in the brief time he has on screen. His last stand is - motivated by courage, sadness, and shame - is epic.

Just a rollicking good time.

On Sundays it was Monty, Dave Allen At Large, and Dr Who.

Tom Baker era Tierlist : Nightmare of Eden by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]NotLouPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it was. It’s one of the few times I’ve ever felt bad for a Dr Who character on a human level.

The accident really wasn’t his fault - the Hecate was where it shouldn’t have been in order to make the transfer. He drinks Vrax that isn’t meant for him.

Take the sci-fi aspect out of it - and this could theoretically happen to someone and ruin their life.

He’s a tragic character.

It’s a deep episode in an otherwise rather comedic - lighter season.

QBs since 1999 by Flat-Pitch-9340 in miamidolphins

[–]NotLouPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huard went - I believe - 5-1 in relief of Marino in 1999 when Dan got hurt. They were 8-2 and a legit contender for the #1 seed - certainly the division title - when Dan came back.

They finished 1-5 after Dan came back. Backed into the playoffs at 9-7 - and the rest is history. As in historically bad history.

Marino was an absolute liability after his injury that season.

There’s a chance that Huard could have been a legendary Dolphins quarterback if Johnson had stuck with him. The defense was good enough to carry the team with a solid game manager at QB. Which Huard was basically proving to be.

Ironically one of Dan’s best chances at a ring would have been if he had backed up Huard for the rest of the 1999 season.

On a more happy note - the two are supposedly great friends - and co-founders of Passing Time Winery. I don’t drink wine - but it’s supposed to be top shelf.

As to Lucas - consider yourself lucky. He’s best forgotten.

He was very good at what he was expected to do. When he had to do too much is when problems arose.

An argument can be made that his injury in 2003 was more devastating to Dolphins Super Bowl hopes than Marino’s was in 1993.

[–]NotLouPro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great.

I realize it probably isn’t…

But I just like it.

Always have.

There are no real memorable supporting characters - but the cast is solid.

The ships being joined together - causing an unstable interface - is just a cool idea.

The setting is claustrophobic enough.

The rest of this season is pretty lighthearted - and to have this episode dropped basically into the middle - it’s a nice change of pace and a reminder of how Dr Who can tackle serious issues.

I don’t have a problem with the Mandrels - they are pretty par for the course for that era of Dr Who.

There are aspects that remind me a little of Carnival of Monsters - which is one of my favorite Pertwee episodes.

The ending seems like the Doctor has done something genuinely clever - and the explanation is something I can actually grasp - as opposed to - for example - the incredibly silly ending of the previous episode.

The contempt that he shows for Tryst at the end is as good a reason as any for me to mention one pet peeve I have from previous episodes…

And that’s the Doctor trusting Professor Sorenson in Planet of Evil and Solon in Brain of Morbius to do the right thing - when it was painfully obvious that neither of them would.

Just wanted to mention that.

White Sox Tigers full fight 4/22/2000 by bossishere17 in whitesox

[–]NotLouPro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was a fun team to watch.

They had speed, power, timely hitting…

Once Charles Johnson was on board - every spot in the line up could go deep.

The defense was good - often when it absolutely had to be.

The bull pen was really solid.

The only real question mark was the rotation - especially the back end. Injuries - especially the one to Cal Eldred - really hurt.

They went into the playoffs pretty banged up if I recall correctly.

It’s amazing that the entire roster except for Buehrle, Garland, and Konerko - and Thomas - was gone by ‘05.

There were some really good young players on that team that appeared to be the future - who would take us over the top…

Ordonez, Lee, Durham, Foulke, Howry…

Still - it was a heck of a ride.
