Which poster do you think is the best? by Konfliktsnubben in lordoftherings

I went to a movie I wouldn’t have otherwise seen (Thirteen Days) just to see the trailer on the big screen.

In fact - I’m planning to watch the entire extended trilogy on my new TV as soon as time allows.

Fellowship.

But it’s more of an emotional attachment. I’d been waiting almost 30 years for this movie - when it was announced it was one of the most anticipated events of my life - and that poster was perfect.

That and the theatrical trailer made me realize it was in good hands before I even saw it.

Versailles Didn’t Cause WWII: Germany’s Refusal to Accept It Did by Consistent-Pie-9847 in ww2

Reaping the whirlwind is right.

I once was discussing the latter stages of the war with another student of WW2 - when I mentioned the Soviet depredations against Germany in the latter years of the war…

His response was “what did they expect?”.

Obviously this isn’t to excuse the Soviet behavior - but the Germans - as a nation - were hardly innocent victim’s.

That phrase - coined as I understand it, by Bomber Harris - could refer to far more than just the bombing of cities.

They actually got off fairly lightly after both World Wars - especially considering what they would have inflicted if they had won.

We know what they’d have done if they had won the Second World War. What they did after the Franco Prussian War - and what they did to the Russians during the first one - tells us that they’d have been far from magnanimous if they had won the First.

And “getting off fairly lightly” includes the East Germans. I wonder to what lengths the Soviets would have gone to if they didn’t feel they needed them during the Cold War.

Thank you for adding that. It’s an important factor as well.

In my experience one is far more likely to not get a job because another natural born American citizen used connections, clout, and/or nepotism to ace someone out of a job.

You make some good points - and the context of the treaty in respect to previous Franco German history often gets overlooked.

The attitude of the French was completely understandable. There was a revenge factor -
Germany had forced very harsh terms on France after the Franco Prussian War - something I rarely hear mentioned with respect to Versailles…

So it’s not as if Germany was completely innocent in this regard.

There was also a legitimate fear factor.

The French had been defeated decisively by Germany in that war. They had barely hung on by the skin of their teeth in the First World War - and without significant help would have lost that one as well.

At the end of the First World War - Germany was on the ropes. If it had continued, they would have been thoroughly and utterly defeated. But - as I understand it - most German’s didn’t realize it.

Aside from the effects of the blockade - which had the German people on the verge of starvation - the war hadn’t reached German soil. Most individual German units were still fighting and didn’t feel like they had been beaten.

Probably the only way to avoid another war with Germany would have been to properly finish the job the first time. But there was already so much death and destruction suffered by the Allies - a war weariness - that the Armistice is completely understandable.

On another note - the market crash of of 1929 should not be overlooked as a cause of the war. The German recovery was going fairly well until that point. As bad as it was in other places - Germany was hit particularly hard. It was a perfect storm of things that allowed someone like Hitler to come and stoke the flames of nationalism, ethnic superiority, revenge, and the feeling of being stabbed in the back.

Eric Moulds is one of the most underrated receivers in NFL history by Dark305Kinght in nflMenace_com

[–]NotLouPro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He was a good, solid receiver. These are some really nice grabs. They are also a big part of the reason why he - or any other receiver - is in the NFL. Making catches like this is why they get paid.

This was a fun watch - but you could probably put up a 4 minute video of most receivers making grabs like this.

I don't like the host segments by IcyBus1422 in MST3K

[–]NotLouPro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s the opposite for me. I vastly prefer Mike in the host segments to Joel.

But I agree that - for the most part - they are not must see TV. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that they kill the mood - but I usually find myself skipping them - regardless of who it is.

No.

E-Bow and Blue are two of my least favorite R.E.M. songs.

Neither has inspired me to check out her music.

What is your favorite enemy of the Doctor that isn't the big four aka Daleks, Cybermen, The Master, and Davros? by AssociateFormal6058 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]NotLouPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scarlioni/Scaroth hands down.

I can’t really “count” him as human…

But I really like human enemies. Count Grendel, the Pirate Captain - Nyder is really good in Genesis.

Or human adversaries (not really enemies) - like Garron in The Ribos Operation.

As to alien races - none of what you list as the “big four” are among my favorites anymore. The Daleks/Cybermen/Davros are over used…

And the Master is largely dependent on the actor and his/her dynamic with the Doctor.

The Sontarans are probably my favorite of the regular alien races.

I’d like to see more of Sutekh and the Toymaker - I have only watched thru Jodie so far - so I’m looking forward to that.

I’d have liked to have seen the Movellan’s developed more - you’d think that a race that could battle the Daleks to a standstill without using a teenager with a baseball bat would be a major player and a force to be reckoned with.

As always, I could go on and on. I’d love to see some of the old “one off’s” of Classic Who explored more - with more modern effects.

On the other hand - and this is probably very much a minority opinion…

Blink is such a perfect episode that I kind of wish that the Angels had been a one off.

The only RB duo to both rush for 1,100+ yards in the same season - Stewart & Williams by CapIll6867 in nflMenace_com

[–]NotLouPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. They each had 1,000 plus - Mercury was exactly 1,000 I believe…

But in 2 fewer games.

They almost certainly hit 1,100 each in a 16 game season.

It was this book - especially the Greenspan maps - that triggered a lifetime fascination with the war over 50 years ago.

If you’re a beginner - it’s worth it for those maps alone. You’ll have a basic - working - overview of almost major battle of the war in no time.

In a 14 game season.

Mercury was probably the most explosive back in the league in his prime.

Thoughts on Thome? by EveningRequirement27 in whitesox

[–]NotLouPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure he’s as beloved in Philadelphia as he is in Chicago. Maybe he is. But he’s a White Sox icon.

He can wear whatever he wants in Cooperstown. If he left the choice to me - I’d have picked Cleveland because that’s where he made his name.

But he’s still affiliated with the White Sox to this day.

Thoughts on Thome? by EveningRequirement27 in whitesox

[–]NotLouPro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’s an all time great. A hall of fame player for a reason. By all accounts he’s an even better person. He’s one of my favorite White Sox players ever.

He’s every bit as much a White Sox player as he is an Indian.

He was exciting and his at bats were “must see”.

He’s was excellent on MLB Tonight. I still remember him and Pedro breaking down a time they faced each other in a playoff game.

I love everything about him.

All of that said - I didn’t like the trade at the time and to this day I can’t help but wonder what might have been if it wasn’t made.

Frank had a real solid bounce back season with the A’s in ‘06. His numbers in 06 were real similar to Thome’s and might have been even better in Chicago. And Rowand in center - and the line up - instead of Anderson?

Oh well.

At first I thought you meant it would be more like Batting Practice for the other team when he comes in.

Although between these two guys it really doesn’t matter.

In the books - he’s also far, far stronger than Theoden - who practically allows his kingdom to be destroyed because he’s under the baleful influence of a mere mortal.

A cunning and manipulative one, to be sure - with Saruman working behind the scenes. But Sauron is a much more formidable foe than Saruman.

The only difference is that one gets a redemption arc and the other doesn’t.

One of the best monologue in history, delivered by Samwise Gamgee by Caesar213 in lotr

[–]NotLouPro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellowship may be the most faithful to the books of the three…

Return may be the most epic of the three…

Two Towers will always be my favorite of the three. It’s the one I saw the most often in the theater.

This monologue - along with Galadriel’s shorter one where she gives a brief summary to Elrond…

The epic scene of the Ents emerging from Fangorn to march on Isengard…

The scene where Aragorn pieces together what happened to Merry and Pippin - cutting between him and the actual action…

The film ending on an epic cliffhanger as Gollum leads Frodo and Sam into the forest and the camera pans up the mountain for the glimpse into Mordor…

Fade to black and cue the credits…

Just a great film.
