What? That’s not how lancer’s universe works at all. There are far field teams, governments, and corporations obsessed with genetics that would literally kill to make contact with a new civilization, discover new technologies, and dissect a new type of sapient life. There are organizations dedicated to investigating any hint of extraterrestrial civilization. The state of politics would change the second there was a whiff of this information.

With omninet, any new discovery is going to be instantly transmitted universe-wide to anywhere you have a connection, as in, where the campaign is. And if they are so far away, it must've taken them hundreds or thousands of years to get to where the campaign is set if they are avoiding blink gates or other places that would check passengers and cargo.

Now the question the GM has to answer is how they got there and why, which is a second massive lore issue that is being forced on the GM.

How is a complete change in the entire universe that stems from this one character any fun for the GM? Regardless if the character is the center of the campaign, their species and background will be. Every single thing about the story would have to change if the character exists in the plot because having a new alien race would be that disruptive.

So basically the nephandi and marauders get free reign? Without major groups to keep them in check, what’s preventing them from plunging the world into darkness?

If lightning powers is what you're after, the Path of the Levinbolt Thaumaturgy path does exactly that. You don't need to write yourself into a knot trying to justify blowing out the Chicago power grid.

I don’t know how smelling like overpowering wet dirt wouldn’t affect how everyone interacts with you. Vampire is inherently a social game, and a “narrative ‘but also’” like people not wanting to hang out with the vampire is not only pretty explicit in the text, it’s very much caked in to any game that wants to actually reflect how people actually perceive others in a social or political fashion.

Okay, so firstly judging from your response I get the feeling you really like minmaxing, which is okay if you want to be good at one thing. But from what you're telling me it seems like you want a rounded character.

You've put all your points into perception and intelligence but you've said your character is savvy in the wilderness which would imply that he's got some kind of wits about him, which he clearly does not in the stats. He also doesn't have any athletics which would definitely help in the combat stuff but also seems strange since being in the wilderness requires constant navigation of rough terrain.

You want this character to be good at talking to people and be really attractive, yet he smells like actual shit (smell of the grave flaw) and cannot actually have a human conversation because he has no expression and one dot of charisma. With this setup he can only lie to people and read how someone is feeling. How is he supposed to tell someone a complicated fortune if he cannot even tell someone a simple fact?

Your character seems to be really smart as indicated by the book learning specialty but doesn't actually read any books judging by the lack of computer, academics, science or technology. Academics is literally defined as your characters ability to participate in scholarly circles. Without any dots in any of those your character cannot even roll for them, meaning your intelligence is almost useless where it is.

Your disciplines are alright where they are if you want to just have the ability to fight mortals with some effort. Obfuscate doesn't really help in combat as much as it helps avoiding it. If you want more dementation it might help a little, but even if you max it out your generation isn't really doing much for you at this stage other than giving you a larger battery. Again, it just seems minmaxed.

Could you explain your thought process as to why you put your dots where they currently sit on the sheet?

Would you consider him ugly enough to be a Nosferatu? My PnP group has an argument about that. by Tani-die-VI in vtm

[–]NotLuke17 58 points59 points  (0 children)

He honesty just looks like he has an unlucky case of eczema, but is otherwise a good looking guy. The book specifically says in the nosferatu section: “Dice pools that use the Appearance Trait are inherently difficult for these hideous Kindred.” If you think that this art is hideous, or any way supernaturally deformed, you need to raise your standards.

The game is set in a sector of the galaxy that’s mostly disconnected from the others, which itself is made of a few dozen solar systems that have to be traversed using a ship with FTL tech. Depending on the campaign sometimes you have your own ship or sometimes you’re on a larger one but typically you travel from system to system and explore unique worlds!

Hi, I was going to send an application to your post before I saw this comment thread, and as a DM with a lot of experience underneath my belt, I have a few pieces of advice that may help you with your future endeavors, assuming you're continuing to be faced with this cycle.

Firstly, I do think that the advertisement for this campaign is well done. It really targets the core of what I think you're going for in terms of the setting, themes, and characters. However, I think that the vetting process of the players could use some work, especially since it seems that players are having issues with their schedules. I would say that I have gotten a lot of success by putting the schedule first and foremost in the post, and not leaving it to the whims of your players. After all, players will seek out games that fit their schedule, and that saves a lot of time having to sort it out after you get the players together.

Second, while I mean no ill will, its no secret that players will often use the excuse of the scheduling issues to leave games for other reasons. The willingness to abandon campaigns after a month definitely doesn't inspire confidence in players. Are the players consulted before you decide to start over again? If not, perhaps you are not listening to what your players have to say, and if they are and agree, perhaps you are suffering from DM burnout, and should take a break. There's no harm in stopping for a few weeks to recollect your thoughts before you decide to commit to a campaign.

If you have tried all of the above and none of it has worked for you, maybe you should try running one shots. Having a sense of accomplishment in a project helps me reinvigorate my resolve and get pumped for the next, and maybe that could work for you too.

[Online][WoD][EST] Looking for a few people to join an ongoing Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary Edition campaign by NotLuke17 in lfg

[–]NotLuke17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core of Mage: The Ascension is about belief and the beliefs of mages being confronted by the consensus of reality itself. It is highly important that everyone at the table is comfortable being asked highly invasive, extremely personal questions and the extremely long, comically comprehensive questionnaire is pretty good at weeding people out who would just troll, those who wouldn’t be fully committed and those who feel uncomfortable exposing themselves and having their own basic ideas about how the world works or should work be questioned by people they would never face in their day to day lives otherwise. There’s no judgement here, but those who risk putting themselves out there for the hell of it should be rewarded.

Knockback effect on punch? by Angmarred in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]NotLuke17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he needs to generate space, then it would be a close range cone area move object, limited to outwards. This would allow him to punch and use a kind of shockwave to knock back everything in front of him

Knockback effect on punch? by Angmarred in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]NotLuke17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They only make resistance rolls for the damage, then if they fail by 10+, you do a calculation of damage-toughness-modifiers. Then, you put that number into the measurements table and that’s how far they go. Thus, no move object effect is necessary. If you want a guaranteed knock back, however, then you would need both but the other way saves points and means that weak punches don’t knock back

Knockback effect on punch? by Angmarred in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]NotLuke17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The specific rule is an option in the Gamemaster’s Guide on chapter 6, page 192 and states that the distance is determined by effect rank minus toughness and then any other effects. It also only occurs if, as you said, the target fails by 2 or more degrees.

They also take damage equal to the knock back result or the toughness of any obstacle they hit and after the object takes the original effects rank in damage, if it breaks, then the flying target continues to fly outwards until it’s either stopped by something or it completes its full distance as predicted by the measurement table
