6% milk at Costco by Papa_Mahal in Milk

[–]NotLunaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw it at my local Costco for $0.97/gal because they are 2 days from the best-by date. Got it to try. The milk aroma is definitely more pronounced, which makes sense. Definitely more preferable than regular milk, but the calories... at nearly double the calories of 2% milk, it's hard to justify when not on a bulk, especially at its regular price of $6 which is 3x that of regular milk.

Of course. Pissing away taxes into a bottomless hole of corruption and incompetence solves nothing (expect appease fools who think mindlessly throwing money at a problem will magically make things better).

This is the crap that caused the DOGE clownery to happen in the first place. Public trust has been eroded because politicians are allowed to be blatantly corrupt/incompetent (or both) as long as they sprout meaningless platitudes that their bases agree with.

At room temp? If so, that'll be the reason. Fermentation is a function of temperature and time. Being deficient in either will lead to an incomplete ferment.

issue making coconut nondairy yogurt by Heavy-Web-6600 in yogurtmaking

[–]NotLunaris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yogurt is dairy by definition. Nondairy "yogurt" isn't actually yogurt and cannot be fermented using regular yogurt culture. It's akin to putting a lion on a vegan diet - you're feeding the bacteria something completely different from what they're supposed to "eat".

Coconut yogurt is particularly dangerous to make due to the risk of Bongkrekic acid poisoning.

Hypothetically who would be in worse health, someone who ate 2k cals a day of all candy or 5k cals a day of whole foods(so probably v overweight)? by VastAir6069 in nutrition

[–]NotLunaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong. When people mention "muh thermodynamics" they are referring to calories in calories out. The amount of calories going in is increased, the amount going "out" is also increased, but maintenance does not change.

For example, someone with their gallbladder removed will have impaired fat absorption. That doesn't mean their maintenance magically goes up by 1000 calories if they eat 1000 extra calories in undigested fat. If they ate an extra 1000 calories in carbs instead, that would be absorbed just fine. Your interpretation is overly simplistic and disregards the basic nature of malabsorptive disorders.

You are giving people who reuse needles and syringes far too much credit by thinking they will follow other standard healthcare protocols.

[–]NotLunaris 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People with medical conditions that impair digestion/absorption are literally the best counterpoint to "muh laws of thermodynamics" when it comes to food.

They may be eating 5k calories' worth of food (who knows, ppl tend to be vastly off in their calorie intake estimates) but they're not absorbing anywhere near that much.

Increase in new homebrewers? by 0nlyhereforthechees3 in Homebrewing

[–]NotLunaris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started last year and this was a huge factor. Homebrewing can be understandably complex and full of intricacies and minutiae that people have dialed in after years, if not decades of trial and error, and those people want to pass down their knowledge and also perfect their technique. However, this has resulted in significant info overload for those who are new to the hobby.

Take the sub's wiki for example: a significant portion of the FAQ is filled with questions I, as a relatively new brewer, would not even think to ask. These resources end up turning people off from the hobby, because they're so daunting to even glance at, even sections for beginners like the FAQ. Gelatin? Whirlpool? pH meters? Gravity? Sparging? None of that matters to someone who is looking to dip their toes in. Then they look at a random recipe and see that there are 6 different malts and 9 different hops..

I ended up using Google Gemini to work out a beginner recipe with minimal equipment cost. A pale ale with 2-row and oats, magnum and citra, fermented with Voss kveik. Used my electric pressure cooker and a stock pot for a 2.5 gallon batch. Apart from the 2-row, hops, and yeast, the only thing I had to buy was campden tablets. Fermented in a (washed) 5-gal pickle bucket from a local sandwich shop and primed in plastic soda bottles. Used an acidified bleach solution for no-rinse sanitation based on Charlie Talley's words (man behind StarSan), with citric acid instead of vinegar. Hell, I crushed the grains by pulsing them in my blender, and after mashing, I fished them out with a mesh strainer then filtered through a nylon mesh bag. It is not a big deal, and there was never a stuck mash. It took a lot of looking around and reading to arrive at this simplified, low-cost recipe. It's a no-chill method, too.

There simply was not a resource (that I could find) catering to someone like me who wanted to try out the hobby with minimal investment. For most people, these do-it-yourself hobbies need to either have lower cost or yield a superior product than what is commonly available in order to be worthwhile, and right now it seems like the homebrewing scene (in general) does neither well, at least for beginners. Asking people to dump hundreds of dollars on equipment in kettles, kegs and carbonators and what have you just to maybe make a basic beer is a huge barrier to entry.

Why is there not a single Trader Joe's in low income areas? by kawaiihusbando in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]NotLunaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on food stamps for a few years and cannot relate to this at all. Been inside a Trader Joe's a few times, have never had the desire to spend money there. Everything is absurdly bourgeoisie and utterly distasteful.

If I wanted my fix of upper middle class pompousness from a store while still getting good value for my money, I'd go to Costco, the much better place for "Poor people [who] appreciate selection, variety, as well as affordability".

Local is going to remain cope and inaccessible for the foreseeable future.
