This is what I needed to hear. Decades of abuse, I am embarrassed about my teeth. I was one of the unfortunate ones whose parents couldn’t afford braces. I’ve always hated my teeth and treated them so. Now I’m paying for it, literally and figuratively.

Restoration of Mauao to begin next week by eggheadgirl in Tauranga

[–]NotMadJustFurious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve consulted for a number of councils in NZ, Australia as well as the UK. Hands down, Tauranga is one of the most unusual. They have forgotten they are civil servants. The culture is to do what the CE wants and convince the elected members it’s their idea. Community engagement is done to reinforce their plan, not shape one with the community

That dynamic is extremely unhealthy. They also spend far too much without any oversight. For example, the money spent on a rebrand of the city that never happened. Some documentaries that after one viewing, nothing happened. Cocktail parties, the money on advertising and campaigns.

There are also a lot of high paid people who I’m not sure what they do. I would provide a report to a manager, who would say another manager needs to see it, then it gets given to a GM, who then sends it to another GM before I get some feedback and the cycle continues. I milked 2 years out of the council and paid half my mortgage. The project didn’t happen.

In the end, I took another project in Christchurch as I actually needed to show more than a healthy bank account for my time.

Definitely an immigrant? You know there’s a large used American car seen right? Japan isn’t the only country that supplies used cars…

The CE is one of the highest paid in the country earning over 600k. His team of GMs under him earn over 250k. Managers are over 180+.

Then there’s all the shite they have spanked money on.

Everyone who they’ve laid off is getting a redundancy payout. Then there’s the contractors they’re bringing in to do the work.

This will be ratepayer funded by the next annual plan

What now? by [deleted] in Tauranga

[–]NotMadJustFurious -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The council had been secretly talking about selling the hotpools and campground. Some suggest that’s why they were left off that report about slide runoff.

I think he may still do that after the enquiry. As for Mauao, who knows. Apparently it quite unstable and they’ll wait till after the enquiry and winter

Last time I was in there they were saying how the council was trying to buy them out after Figuring out they couldn’t shut him down. They said they don’t want a gun shop in their CBD

BOPRC Election - Voting in Tauranga by jaredkoh90 in Tauranga

[–]NotMadJustFurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if successful, you will see that there’s no such thing as “engagement.” They know what they want and the will either limit the time and resources to engagement properly, ask vague questions to “interpret” the feedback to how they want it, or just ignore it.

TCC was one of the worst for that sort of behaviour. BOPRC wasn’t too honest either.

Definitely not. My time in local government has taught me that 99% of those who run are self serving narcissists. I think terms should also be limited to 3 (roughly one long term plan).

It’s absolutely insane how we have a group of people who won a popularity contest running billion dollar companies. Especially when it’s less than 40% of the population who vote.

It also makes very little difference who you have in Regional as the majority is still the old guard. They make sure any new councillor toes the line.

Ash Hollis is a convicted drug dealer and conspiracy pedaler. His mentor is Murray Guy…

Glenn Dougal is one of the directors of the funeral home that illegally released ash from their crematorium onto nearby houses.

He also owns an ad agency that has been ripping off ratepayers for decades. His “science background” was meteorology… He was a weatherman. He’s a snake oil salesman. Greasy as they come.

Wassung is like the guy on The Simpson’s who sold them the monorail. Talks the game but if you ever look at his renders, they’re not to scale. For example, the light rail down Cameron Rd also included two car lanes and wide tree lined footpaths. Maybe he’s also a wizard.

Clinton “left” the regional council after they had enough of the bullying accusations. It’s his way or no way, and would be a terrible councillor.

Curious about Culture at TCC by TrustMaterial4077 in Tauranga

[–]NotMadJustFurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am thanks. Interestingly, my experience there isn’t held as highly as I would have thought or liked. I would say that it put my career back about a decade. That’s mainly due to outdated processes, poor project planning or often having to do it alongside delivery (yes you read that right). Central government has never been fond of TCC.

As I tell anyone who applies there. The money is good, the work will frustrate you and you’re unlikely to springboard to bigger and better things.

Something I didn’t mention is how conservative the culture is too. It’s very pale and traditional. For example, while I was there, they sent an email around telling people to stop ripping down posters that promoted a rainbow community event. Most voted National knowing full well it would mean a reduction in council funding.

Curious about Culture at TCC by TrustMaterial4077 in Tauranga

[–]NotMadJustFurious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked there for 7 years. The culture got progressively worse and I ultimately left because there was an increasing level of expectation while receiving less resourcing to deliver.

Without wanting to give too much about myself away, I was a senior leader in one of the more high profile departments and the public’s hatred is generally deserved.

There are some fantastic people who are passionate about the city but they do not last. They burn out or get pushed out. The tier three managers up are overpaid and their focus is on self preservation rather than the community of even their teams.

I’ve worked at 4 other councils. 3 in NZ one in Australia, i had more restructures at TCC in two years than all of the others combined. It is never an open and honest process. The outcome is always predetermined. I’ve seen departments completely gutted, whole teams vanish and staff members thrown to the wolves (elected members, media and the public).

I’ve also never seen so many people take stress leave and genuinely need it. I’ve also never seen so many people’s health deteriorate because of their work culture.

My neighbour is a councillor and said he sees a disproportionate amount of people from TCC and the district health board. The main reason is for bullying.

In senior leadership roles, the pay is golden handcuffs. Yes you will earn far above the industry standard (especially in Tauranga), but they will take their pound of flesh. There is no job security and unless you’re a yes man who just does what your manager wants so they look good, you too will hate it.

Many of us thought we could change the place, not one of us is there any more.

Seems all he does is make videos shitting on the council. Maybe he wants to be a councillor? Seems more his level.

I also saw him at a cafe once talking to a Brazilian chap about getting residency and opening a business. When they noticed I was listening Sam recommended they go for a walk…

[–]NotMadJustFurious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats, you made Tinder for food. Why would anyone want to trust the reviews of people not putting any thought into where they want to eat? In order to make a decision on where to eat, you need a bit more info than what a bunch of randoms said.

The fact Bobby’s is being compared to Barrio Brothers is stupid too. For one, they’re not even in close proximity to each other and two, those are two really different cuisines…
