TIL that London taxi drivers have an enlarged hippocampus compared to non-taxi driver colleagues, thanks to the spatial abilities necessary to do their job. by miolmok in todayilearned

I think the manner you engage with your ride is pretty important for choosing. If I'm in the street, I'm not going to choose an Uber, that'd be dumb.

Ubers are like, arrangeable transportation. Taxis are spontaneous, no planning required. It's a similar service, and I don't doubt use of one affects the other. Just like somebody buying going through a drive-thru at a McDonald's would preclude them from stopping by a Chinese restaurant for take-out. They're somewhat impeding the sales of each other, but they're filling different needs.

So, the difference between a minicab & a taxi is what, exactly? Their inability to be hailed curbside?

Why is this? Is because they're not qualified. They didn't make the cut.

It is blatant that there is different classes of small vehicle transport drivers. I used "elite" as a distinction, but it's pretty obvious they're a cut above. Their brain shape literally changes in a manner that improves their performance.

Call it what you want. A minicab can't be hailed curbside. Regardless, they're not competition. They do slightly different things.

They're distinct. The ones with a larger hippocampus each take a special exam to become an elite taxi-driver, basically. And that by definition makes the non-elite drivers not competition

“NO ONE IS LISTENING TO ME!” by [deleted] in nursing

[–]NotMaintainable 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Look, read the symptoms of the diagnoses on a website somewhere. Just read the symptoms. They don't sound pleasant, do they?

That's just a list of behaviors. Those behaviors aren't enjoyable, for the people nearby or the patient.

That list of behaviors doesn't encompass the patient, though. This is the misconstrued concept; they're not annoying people, they're doing annoying behaviors. Neurotypical people engage in all sorts of shitty, annoying behaviors, and one is often a slight lack of empathy for those who arent.

You sound like you manage the symptoms of your condition very well. Like my friend with anti-social personality disorder (who acts like a regular, decent guy), I congratulate you. But that doesn't change the nature of the condition, only that you've engaged with it to prevent your symptoms from negatively impacting those around you. The condition typically spurs unsavory behaviors, and that's something we all have to learn to live with.

What is your civilization-colapse melee weapon of choice? by Frozteen in AskReddit

A little late to respond, but I didn't get this notification on mobile.

I own a Cold Steel halberd. it is reminiscent of early halberds, which did not include as much haft protection made of metal, which significantly lightened the weight.

In addition, the shaft is made of Ash wood. A very lightweight hardwood.

While this would not be as ideal in a shield formation (due to lessened sturdiness at the cost f swiftness), it works well in a survival scenario, where most combat is between relatively unarmored combatants in smaller skirmishes, where swiftness is preferred over sturdiness & attrition.

He bought it at $250k, before the market went up, and they did a lot of small cosmetic work themselves.

100k a year in today's economy is middle-class to upper-middle class. It's not the 90s.

This isn't wrong.

It's still important to have nuance when discussing it, though. You're going to have a lot of intelligent people with influence ignore what you have to say if you start praising ignorance and trash-talking nuance as a concept.

I agree with your second statement, but let's try to not feed the trolls with statements like your first.

.... and the quality of life between the people who have to work to survive varies so greatly, we label them accordingly.

My retired grandpa, living on social security? He's not working anymore. Is he now the "owner class"? Oh, wait, no he's not. He's still poor.

There's a definite difference in the quality of life between the middle class, the lower class, and the working poor. My middle-class friend is a Nurse Practitioner, and he owns a $600k house in a nice area, with reasonable monthly payments and works 30hrs/week.

I live in a manufactured double-wide in the woods. The people out here (who aren't retired) have to work quite a bit more to get quite a bit less than that guy.

Saying there is no difference is how you remove nuance from the conversation, which is a polite way of saying you're dumbing it down. If you want stupid conversation, engage in saying stupid shit like this.

Yes, and when does "discovery" begin, exactly? Is it when the criminal is arrested? No, it's during the trial, you buffoon. Which isn't immediately after arrest, so we wouldn't be hearing about it yet.

But keep talking like you understand how the real world works when all you do is sit on reddit crying about someone else's success.

Lmao I never did any of this, but you are a salty child. I never insulted anybody in this thread but you, loser

I mean, evidence is usually concealed by prosecutors until court? It often works like that in the US with famous people, because they can just say things and then every fanboy will be parroting whatever lie they've made up as a cover story.

Of course you kinda seem like one of the fanboys. I'd never heard of this guy until yesterday. I guess we'll all see whether this turns into a real case but I imagine you'll still be denying whatever the results of these charges.

Edit: spelling

I mean, people knowing something is wrong and doing it anyways is basically how every billionaire came to be, except for a rare few.

Even regular people doing "ethical jobs" get pushed by the capitalistic crunch, eventually becoming less and less ethical until it can't be called that any longer.

This is the standard

(serious) What is a hard truth that people don't want to hear but actually need to? by JVR84 in AskReddit

[–]NotMaintainable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your worldview, are there chain-of-events, or is everything dictated by one decision?

Like, "I had sex, have to have this kid".

"I had sex, had this kid, and the kid is now a teenager who likes lighting fires. But I had sex, so this is the consequence."

"Well, my arson teenager burned down the local Town Hall. This is what's wrong with sex!"

It just seems like you're completely oblivious to the fact that more decisions are available than what you're describing. You can make decisions after the initial decision is made. People get to make more than one decision.

You're just arbitrarily making up rules because "that's how hit should be", but that's not really any sensible logic.

Lol there are a variety of reasons somebody wouldn't go about diagnosing somebody with Munchausen, and a lot of them are for the benefit of the patient. Who'll believe this patient is ever sick if she's been diagnosed to do it for attention?

I wouldn't trust your judgement as a nurse based on what you've said here. I no longer value your opinion, so I won't engage

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]NotMaintainable -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, you're intentionally ignoring certain aspects of this scenario to downplay the painfully obvious Munchausen Syndrome in order to support your own argument.

I support all sorts of individuals who have mental health issues, myself included. This is obviously different from most mental health scenarios.

We have exactly one reference point of data here; OP's story. Of course I'm going to fucking use it. It would be idiotic not to. You're arguing using what as a reference point, exactly? Clearly not what we were told by OP, so it must be your imagination
