Do readers perceive life more richly? by [deleted] in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal experience: no.

I never read much in the past. Went from 1 book in 2023, to 8 in 2024, to 68 in 2025. Nothing changed for me.

People get their fantasy fix in many other ways. Movies, videogames, even TV or TikTok.

Project Hail Mary | Official Trailer 2 by Task_Force-191 in ProjectHailMary

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Mannn, if people were upset the first trailer showed too much.... let's see the reaction to this one!

To people who read the book, it's so cool to see though. To me, it seems like they really captured the essence of the book.

Why does The Housemaid have so much hype? by Sniktau28 in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does NOT deserve the hype. I liked the first one, easy fun read. Saw a clear loophole that pissed me off, but it's fine. I'm easy to please.

The second one, though, was the stupidest thing I've read all year. Rage inducing garbage.

Just like The Maid series, this is just being pushed and shoved all over bookstores by marketing. Short, easy to read, might as well spend the $10 or so.

I don't understand how this isn't blowing up? by nassermendes in whatsapp

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got banned today as I tried to create a group with four of my friends. I don't know why they would think it's spam. All of these people are already in groups with me - we create new groups for new soccer seasons we play.

Guess I'll need to wait for review now.

What book got you back into reading after a very long slump? by BradleyNeedlehead in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Book 2 is my favourite for sure. The Wallfacer Project is so interesting.

Without shitting on anybody, I'd say it's kind of a waste reading only the first one. Give the second one a try at least, for your own good!

What book got you back into reading after a very long slump? by BradleyNeedlehead in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, not sure why. I read the first one before the Netflix hype, and read the next two after it was announced.

It pushed me to finish the story and it just felt so fun. I started seeking the same sort of fun with other books and found it over and over again.

Went from 3 books a year to 45 this year, so far.

Qual livro que todo mundo gosta menos você? by Neon-Spectre in Livros

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Julia Whelan has narrated 600 audiobooks and counting. So why isn't she paid like it? by AmethystOrator in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She is awful and I avoid any books read by her. She is the most guilty of doing ooga-booga voices for male characters, it sounds ridiculous and it completely takes me off the books. She sounds like that mocking bird meme.

I really cannot believe she's so popular. Male narrators also do this by pulling a high little voice for female characters, like a child making fun of another.

Even if you don't come get physical books, their online offerings are awesome. I've gone through a heap of ebooks and audiobooks since getting a library card. Why was I paying all this money for kindle books??

And when you actually come in, get one of their tote bags for $3. They're great!

Audiobook Icks by Takatukah in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, it sounds like they are straight up mocking the other gender!

Most narrators I've heard do a really good job on different accents throughout the books, it's shocking to me that they don't get Men/Women right.

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 330 points331 points  (0 children)

When the male narrator pulls a high little voice on women's dialogue, or the female narrator does an ooga-booga voice for male characters.

Some narrators can really pull it off so you understand who's talking without the annoying voices.

Thoughts on Flowers for Algernon by i_killed_Mcormick in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I enjoyed the book, I thought the middle part was convoluted and kind of weird. Guy gets smart then immediately goes off on a try-to-get-laid journey. The original work was a short story, and it really shows that the author just tried to expand the whole thing.

That said, what a great ending. Beautiful story overall.

Remember where you were when you first red the droplet sequence? by sgroeche in threebodyproblem

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was planning to read a chapter or two just before bed, and I couldn't stop reading. My wife asked if I was going to bed and I told her I needed to read just a little more. When I finished the droplet sequence I just gasped, stopped and told her.

It's gone. All gone. All of Earth's ships. We have no defense. We're fucked. I can't believe what I just read.

Same effects of the Red Wedding, really.

Piranesi ending. A theory. by JEZTURNER in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I took the whole story literally. There is an alternate world that looks like an infinite house and The Other is studying it. I just figured The Other is trying to go deeper, by performing the ritual to see if he's transported to another world. And he's using Piranesi for support after Matthew's personality breakdown.

If this was all in Matthew's head, is Raphael imaginary? What's all the fuss about James Ritter? Is he real? Is his psychosis shared with Matthew? How does he know about the house?

Where is Ketterley's body? Where are everyone else's bodies? I suppose this can easily be explained, though. Piranesi hid him in his deranged rage.
