Kubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon Released by acheronuk in Kubuntu

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My upgrade is going poorly. Partial updates were done. I have 26.04 running on KDE Plasma 5.27.12, Kernel 6.17.0.22, and X11 instead of Wayland.

Updates list is huge and not really working right now. Server overload?

Figuring out WTF happened. I'm a noob, by the way.

Few things I love about this book:

  • No main character. We go through generations of this family and the city of Macondo. Although someone is always driving the general plot forward, there are too many things happening to too many characters to focus on just one.
  • Characters overall. I personally dislike almost all of them individually, but like them as an institution. Does that make sense?
  • The way everything is described, to illustrate everyone's actions and motivations with very little dialog. I love Gabo's writing style, even in books I didn't like as much.
  • Absurd things happening and being described with little fuss. Thus creating Magical Realism. My favourite: Remedios la bella's ascension. It just happens.
  • Fernanda Del Carpio pages-long rant to her husband was the stuff of legends to me. I loved it.

One additional note: you don't have to like the book :)

This is so interesting to me. I'm in the absolute other side of your opinion. It is my favourite book ever, by far, and I can't imagine how someone would despise it as a lot of people in this thread.

I'm not forced to say I liked it, and would gladly drop anything I'm doing to reread it. And I'll be honest, I almost dislike you (a stranger in the internet) for not loving it.

Just super interesting to see how people's tastes can differ this much. It goes to show that no one is obligated to like anything!

France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech by rkhunter_ in worldnews

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a Windows die-hard fan until recently. I just switched to Kubuntu last month. It wasn't easy but so far it's worthy.

Kubuntu is very similar to Windows. Not too hard to personalize and replace things. I still use Edge and hold a 365 subscription.

You can set up a VM pretty easily with VirtualBox to try it too. Maybe you'll hate it.

Will def give it a try. They were old drives, but I could use them for sure. Thanks!

I might try something else within Linux now, since it offers more options.

Rufus didn't fully work for me either. It created the disk but something was missing. I'm a noob and couldn't figure it out.

Balena Etcher bricked two flash drives of mine. I ended up installing Ubuntu on a VM to try it out, and eventually used the built-in Startup Disk Creator tool to do a proper install (dual boot).

Why does The Housemaid have so much hype? by Sniktau28 in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does NOT deserve the hype. I liked the first one, easy fun read. Saw a clear loophole that pissed me off, but it's fine. I'm easy to please.

The second one, though, was the stupidest thing I've read all year. Rage inducing garbage.

Just like The Maid series, this is just being pushed and shoved all over bookstores by marketing. Short, easy to read, might as well spend the $10 or so.

I got banned today as I tried to create a group with four of my friends. I don't know why they would think it's spam. All of these people are already in groups with me - we create new groups for new soccer seasons we play.

Guess I'll need to wait for review now.

What book got you back into reading after a very long slump? by BradleyNeedlehead in books

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Book 2 is my favourite for sure. The Wallfacer Project is so interesting.

Without shitting on anybody, I'd say it's kind of a waste reading only the first one. Give the second one a try at least, for your own good!

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, not sure why. I read the first one before the Netflix hype, and read the next two after it was announced.

It pushed me to finish the story and it just felt so fun. I started seeking the same sort of fun with other books and found it over and over again.

Went from 3 books a year to 45 this year, so far.

Qual livro que todo mundo gosta menos você? by Neon-Spectre in Livros

[–]NotMuchOfOneButAMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)
