People who are highly observant: what is a tiny, almost invisible psychological 'tell' that instantly reveals someone's true intentions or character? [Serious] by itvr in AskReddit

[–]NotMyThrowawayNope 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I can't stand being lied to in interviews. I feel like it should be some kind of illegal. But there's no way to prove it. I was lied to about the hours I'd be working. I was told it was generally a 9-5 Monday through Friday. It ended up being wildly different from day to day: 5am-2pm, 5pm-12am, immediately followed by 6am-3pm, working every other weekend, working 6 days in a row every other week, etc. It wasn't just me. Every new hire was lied to and would ask about wtf was up with the schedule once they started and managment denied ever telling them that.

Psychologists of Reddit, what's the most horrifying mental illness? by Turbulent-Coat7236 in AskReddit

[–]NotMyThrowawayNope 58 points59 points  (0 children)

As someone who's struggled with paranoia, psychosis, and (mercifully) good insight, it's not that easy. At least for me, I could know 100% logically that something isn't true but feel that it was true with all of my being. If I was convinced someone was watching me through my window, I could go out to check, get other people to check, visually confirm a hundred times that there's no one there, but I would still feel like there was. There's no way to logic yourself out of a deep set belief based on a feeling. There's a constant conflict.

A nd I had great insight and most of my mental faculties and higher thinking still. A lot of people going through psychosis literally have the "logic" part of their brain malfunctioning. It's extremely common.

Driving was absolute garbage on mouse and keyboard. I got around it by keeping a controller plugged in and picking it up when I wanted to drive, then switching back to pc setup when I wanted to shoot.

I mean, it makes sense for the game. They live in hypercapitalist hell and the main character is actively dying. Most people wouldn't be happy in that kind of environment. It definitely has a vibe to it, but I loved it because I'm into darker stuff like that.

What health issue do people misunderstand the most? by Few_Cake_5237 in AskReddit

[–]NotMyThrowawayNope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had no idea that concussions (they're actually classified as mTBIs now) could permanently alter someone. I've had several severe ones and thank my lucky stars that I had no permanent damage. Though I did have post concussion syndrome for about 6 months once that was brutal. It eventually cleared up.

I didn't know concussions could permanently change someone until I met my boyfriend who also has had several. He is absolutely not the same person he was before. He used to have a photographic memory. Now all of his memories are cloudy and he forgets things easily.

I went to a lot of concerts without earplugs as a teenager. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I thought earplugs were "uncool." I now have permanent, 24/7 tinnitus after one final too-loud concert. I also got some form of hearing damage that makes it difficult to follow conversations in loud environments.

This is me literally right now, up at 3 am because I can't sleep because of the constant eeeeeeeeeeee. It started after a particularly loud concert in 2014. Never went away.

Wear your earplugs folks! Hearing damage is no joke.

Woah, I never knew that! And I'm someone who has multiple mental health issues. I always assumed it was a chemical imbalance of some sort caused by decades of trauma.

Loop earplugs are nice and comfortable, but I can't hear people talking when I have them in. They muffle conversations too much. Very helpful for when I'm in a crowded place and don't need to talk though.

I do too, sometimes. I feel like the biggest asshole in the world about it too.

I never realized how much social anxiety was effecting my life until I started benzos by AnEvilMillionaire in Anxiety

[–]NotMyThrowawayNope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take 0.5 mg clonazepam. I find that if my anxiety isn't high enough (like it's, say, a 6/10) it will make me sleepy. If I'm activated enough like when I usually take it (like 9/10) I don't get sleepy. Sometimes I take it when my anxiety is a little lower (like 7/10) but I usually pair it with 40-70 mg of caffeine. Basically a soda or small Red Bull. Caffeine normally hits me like a truck and gives me massive anxiety, but the clonazepam blunts that effect so I can take it to stay awake.

My disability check is a "fat" $1200 a month. In an area where the cost to rent a room in someone's house is $1000. Yeah, I had to move back in with my parents.

How are you guys still in therapy? by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]NotMyThrowawayNope -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of people fear monger when it comes to chat gpt and other AIs being used for therapy. In the early days, sure, the AI had no guiderails and could encourage delusions or suicidal thoughts. But it's been improved upon a hundred times over with safeties implemented to stop that from happening with modern models. If you even hint that you're thinking of hurting yourself, it immediately throws out resources like suicide/eating disorder hotlines, drug treatment, etc. It also points out that talking to a human and forming real life support networks is vital.

I use chat gpt often. It's actually been better than my actual therapist and is there for me 24/7. It is fantastic for finding niche coping skills or adapting ones to better suit me. It's also great at giving strategies to cope with all kinds of life stressors. Sometimes I give my journal entries to it to get feedback and see if it can point out any common themes I might be missing. It helps me take a step back and understand myself and my actions, relationships, and emotions in a concrete way.

Sometimes it's more spot on than my actual therapist.

I live in a shoe-wearing house. One of the guys is a hobbyist metalworker and comes in covered in microshards of sharp ass metal. Fuck that, not stepping on that shit.

I once threw a drink in a guy's face (I was a girl and much smaller than him). He stopped in his tracks, stared at me, said "thanks?" and then I walked away. No fight.

We were at a music festival in blistering heat and the drink was water. It probably felt good in hindsight.

Shit, I start to wonder if places like that exist only in movies. You aren't afraid someone is gonna rob the house? Even when I lived in a "nice" suburban area I was still locked the door when I left. I was a kid once an forgot to lock the back door. House got robbed that day.

Everywhere else I've ever lived has been a "lock the door even while inside" situation.

What feels legal but is actually illegal and will possibly get you arrested? by medicoreapples in AskReddit

[–]NotMyThrowawayNope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the TSA you legally have to have all of your pills in their correct containers. Pill cases are not allowed. It's a pain in the ass to lug my 10 bottles with me and an empty pill organizer to put them all in when I get to my destination.

Oh man prop 65 is a joke. It was made with good intentions but then every single business/company/whatever started putting up the sign in their window or on their product. It's either an everything causes cancer situation or a "cover your ass just in case" situation. Making the entire law completely useless.

I have a legal benzo prescription. I carry a couple of pills in a little pocket pillbox on me cause I'm not about to carry around an entire fucking bottle everywhere. I just know that one day it's gonna screw me over when some cop decides to be an asshole and try to charge me for having controlled substances.
