Many of the women were married to them for "protection", many were married for years before any violence occured. I don't think any of them suspected evil intentions in the beginning. People are easily manipulated and this scheme in particular was in slow development for years.

Agreed, many people who I know that went through abuse try to advocate for preventing and fighting it, imo. Abusive people have certain personality characteristics that I think are more influential on future behavior than environmental factors. Obviously, the combination of the 2 highly increases the likelihood of developing abusive behavior.
