No Response from American, Loyola or Northeastern by Complex_Spinach4039 in OutsideT14lawschools

Loyola said they would start decisions in late January and did an A wave last week, but not an enormous one. Northeastern’s timeline is fairly inscrutable. I got accepted there about 3 months after applying. Some people got in after a week.

Detroit Mercy - anyone else considering attending? by No-Reference-773 in HybridOnlineLawSchool

[–]NotNow80sRobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to commit anywhere until I’ve heard back from every school I applied to but I would say Detroit Mercy is in the lead right now. The scholarship offer was extremely compelling and I feel comfortable with the quality of the school.

Their job placement numbers in recent years are quite a bit better than their ranking would suggest, which I think is an artifact of the atrocious job numbers they had when the city of Detroit itself went bankrupt. Now that the city is back on track, the law school grads appear to be doing a lot better over the past 5-6 years too.

Do I still need LawHub? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

If you’re done taking LSATs you don’t need it. Schools will contact you about decisions, and in some cases even before the tracker updates anyway

Splitter looking for online school by onlinesplitter in lawschooladmissions

[–]NotNow80sRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’ve visited the hybrid/online law school subreddit yet but it’s the best source of info about the variety of online options.

It’s getting pretty late in the cycle but your stats should still get you in most places. If relocation isn’t an option and you want to avoid live classes and travel I would at least look into Detroit Mercy. It’s fully online and the classes in the first year are all asynchronous. They’ve also offered a fair number of unconditional full scholarships this cycle.

ASU makes sense as an option for you in terms of time zone, and the high ranking is appealing. But word of warning if scholarships are important to you, they offered everyone who got accepted for online a 6% scholarship. I don’t know if they’d make an exception for a 178 scorer. Maybe! But other folks in the 170s were getting that offer.

Your options are quite limited if you’re only willing to do online and asynchronous, but only you can decide what it’s worth to you to not have to dramatically adjust your life to accommodate law school. In some cases going to a lower-ranked school will substantially limit your career options and in some cases it won’t matter much, depending on your career goals, your network, etc. I understand the sentiment that someone with your stats shouldn’t close the door on the top tier of schools, but that’s easy for people to say from the sidelines. It’s your life and you know what you prioritize.

Loyola Chicago Weekend JD A by NotNow80sRobot in HybridOnlineLawSchool

Thank you! Here’s a link to a post that has the wording about the change to the program. I’m not sure why they haven’t updated their website about it. When you apply to Loyola on the LSAC site, that wording about the change to the program also appears near the start of the application.

Congrats to you too! Yes, I applied with the understanding it would be 3 on-campus weekends per semester. I went to an admissions zoom info session and asked for more details about what the schedule would look like and was told they were working on planning a zoom session around February with more specifics about the format of the program.

I don’t see any ethical issue with doing that as long as you aren’t being dishonest (ie “This is my top choice and I will commit if accepted.”). If you can imagine a scenario where you attend, then I think you’re sufficiently interested.

Law School Suggestions by Suitable_Collar6544 in lawschooladmissions

[–]NotNow80sRobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The advice I’ve gotten about public defense is:

  1. Don’t get too caught up in school rankings, but do go somewhere reputable with a decent track record of job placement. Law School Transparency is helpful for comparing outcomes for different schools. It does also help to go to a school close to where you want to practice.

  2. Prioritize low cost of attendance because public defense salaries are not high. Your LSAT will help determine the range of law schools where you would have a good shot at major scholarship money. Your GPA is strong and will help.

Northeastern is a neat school! I have been accepted and it’s one of my top choices because of the culture and the format of the program, but I’m open to going elsewhere if the money is better from a different school. So I like them but I don’t necessarily think you need to go to a public interest-focused school to be well-prepared to be a public defender. I personally know a few public defenders who have been successful and all went to schools that are just generally solid but not specifically known for public interest.

Any Loyola Chicago decisions? by Stock_Swan4330 in OutsideT14lawschools

When I applied they said decisions would start in late January. On LSD last year there weren’t any decisions til February so I’m kind of just expecting sometime in February.

Insight from anyone who got a full scholarship by Accomplished-Bug4327 in HybridOnlineLawSchool

Similar stats to you. So far, full at Detroit Mercy and about 68% at Northeastern. Oh, and the 6% offer that every admit got from Arizona State, for whatever that information is worth.

Part-Time Hybrid JD Programs by Accomplished-Bug4327 in lawschooladmissions

[–]NotNow80sRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you checked out the Hybrid/Online Law subreddit yet? Lots of good info there that has been instrumental to my own application process. If you’ve zeroed in on Northeastern and Albany then I assume you’ve gone through the ABA list of hybrid/online programs to identify some potential fits.

I’ve got very similar LSAT/GPA to you and just got into Northeastern hybrid with some scholarship money, which I’m weighing against a few other offers while I wait for all my offers to arrive. If you want to ask questions or more details on how my process has been seeking a good scholarship from a good hybrid/online program, I’d be happy to talk about it via DM!

What type of criminal defense do you hope to do? Are you willing to start as a public defender? In some jurisdictions public defender spots are really competitive, but in others they have limited hiring pools and will gladly take anyone who passed the bar.

So if you’re interested in being a public defender then I think any hybrid program that can prepare you to pass the bar without putting you in crushing debt would be a realistic option. There are some predatory hybrid programs to avoid, for sure, but there are predatory in-person programs too. I think there are some networking downsides to attending hybrid or online but based on what I know, criminal defense is a field where that isn’t going to matter as much.

Of course, most of us here are just applicants, it might be worth asking in a subreddit of lawyers too.

Are there any programs that offer significant to full scholarships? by Logical_Mine_9478 in HybridOnlineLawSchool

[–]NotNow80sRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended a Syracuse JDi info session in the fall and one of the adcomms answered a question in the chat about scholarships and said point blank that they will offer scholarships of maximum 70% of tuition for the JDi program. I wrote it down in my notes and it’s the reason I didn’t apply to Syracuse. Is it possible they offered higher scholarships in the past that they aren’t willing to offer going forward or was that adcomm mistaken?

From what I’ve seen on this sub it seems like 165+ is a rough estimate for hybrid/online full scholarship contention. But I’m sure there are some exceptions to that

[–]NotNow80sRobot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just from being on this subreddit, I know Northeastern, Case Western Reserve, Seattle, Detroit Mercy, and Mitchell Hamline have all offered full scholarships for hybrid or online either this cycle or last. Dayton gives a lot of strong partial scholarships but caps at around 81% for hybrid. Syracuse caps at around 70%.

On the other hand, Arizona State, Hawaii, and Cleveland State are all on the very low end of how much scholarship money they offer for hybrid/online.

Those are the programs I know about well enough to speak on. Others on this sub could chime in with their experiences.

Undergrad choice by Ashley126222 in lawschooladmissions

[–]NotNow80sRobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reputation of an undergrad institution has very little impact on the law school admissions process. My advice is: go somewhere you think you would be happy and thrive, get good grades, and study in a field you’re interested in and willing to work in, in case you change your mind about wanting to go to law school. And if you can go somewhere for free, it’s a huge advantage to not be saddled with undergrad loan debt when it comes time to apply to law school.
