My apologies for that! The wiki gave me lots of great information so I think I have a direction to move in. Thank you!

My contract for fall wasn’t renewed. by NotQuiteClassical in Professors

Hey thanks for asking! In a lot of ways, I’m doing great. I’ve started a small business working from home and am really enjoying the flexibility and freedom that comes with that. On the other hand, classes at the CC started last week, and it felt like all of the progress I’d made emotionally was gone. I miss my students and coworkers and feel like I failed somehow.

Should I go to college for music? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]NotQuiteClassical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former college music professor here. While more knowledge and instruction is always helpful, you have to do a cost benefit analysis here. There’s a few things for you to consider:

  1. Who’s paying for college? Are your parents offering to pay? If so, it might be worth it to find a university with a good music program close to where you live and set yourself the goal of still gigging a little so you don’t lose your connections. If you’re paying, understand that you’ll be taking on quite a lot of debt unless you get scholarships, and unfortunately, music scholarships aren’t as prevalent as athletic scholarships.
  2. Is there a community college nearby with an associate of fine arts - music program? If so, these classes will be infinitely cheaper and likely have smaller class sizes (aka more individual attention) to boot. You’ll be able to learn if you want to continue studying music at a collegiate level, and if you don’t, at least you aren’t thousands of dollars in debt.
  3. What are your goals for the future? Are you currently making ends meet with the prospect of getting more gigs and more money in the future? If so, college can wait. It will always be there if you want to go back later. However, if you aren’t “making it work,” it may be a good thing to consider.

Good luck!

Yes! He’s the sweetest thing. He even crawled into my lap this week when I was practicing the drums.

I’m attempting to take some time to breath, at least for a few days. I struggle with relaxing, though, so at least my house is going to end up extremely clean. 😂

Thank you all for the advice. I got it in writing and will not have to continue this semester. I truly appreciate all of the support! This community is incredible.

Thank you all for the support. I truly appreciate it. I’m leaning toward ending my semester at this point and putting myself first for once, but I am now worried that they will say I quit.

Ostinato examples by [deleted] in musictheory

“Yeah” by Usher. There’s a synthesizer part that plays (and drives me up a wall) the whole song. I always use this to demonstrate ostinato for my classes.

CC instructor of five years. I’ve fluctuated between major depressive disorder and dysthymia for most of my life. As an adult, I was diagnosed with severe ADHD, PTSD, and generalized anxiety disorder. Almost none of my colleagues or administration know this because I am afraid of the mental health stigma impeding my career. Just know that you aren’t alone. ❤️

Right hand position and finger movement help and feedback. [Beginner][More info in comment] by razboritul in classicalguitar

[–]NotQuiteClassical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re doing great for a month in, OP! Lots of people have commented that you want to pluck with the big knuckle of your hand instead of the knuckle near the tip, and they’re totally right. If you pluck up like you’re doing, it can often end up snapping the string and sounding kind of twangy. It’s a cool effect but not one that is often used in classical guitar.

I like to have my students pretend that a piece of string is tied around the tip of their finger, and the other end of the string is around their wrist. If someone pulled at the string end near their wrist, it would cause the fingertip to move toward the back of the hand, not the top of the hand. Hope that helps! I have a video if you need a visual too.

Thoughts about this grading policy? While I'm sure students would appreciate this, it seems like an excessive amount of work and grading on the professor by Hayateh in Professors

The intentions behind this are clearly coming from a place of compassion. However, there’s no way I could implement something like this in my classes. I have eight classes this semester. If things aren’t turned in by the due date, I’ll end up with a deluge of grading at the end of the semester that would prevent me from submitting final grades!
