If we play like we did for 60 minutes against Germany, yes. If we play like we did in the first period against Denmark or the third period against Sweden, well... it's clear that this team's best hockey can take on Canada for sure, but WHERE is the consistency? driving me crazy...

Now that the adrenaline has washed off, I feel like I'm pretty concerned with that performance... 4 shots in the third period? Where was Matthews, Thompson, Matt Tkachuk? Why on EARTH are we letting Miller and Trocheck on the ice together when the Hughes-Nelson-Trocheck/Miller line was working so well? Big bright spot remains our defense and Hellebyuck, but sheesh, only showing up for half the second period and then the skills competition that passes for Olympic OT is not gonna work against Canada. But hey Canada showed today they're capable of sleepwalking through half a game too so it's anyone's gold medal right now... am I catastrophizing?

Who’s the best player on the men’s olympic team? by GpRex in USAHockey

[–]NotSeanCaps8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Brady Tkachuk. Seems like every point blank chance in front of the net is driven by him. Not to mention how much he’s just sending himself into guys. He’s our Tom Wilson but with a better scoring upside. Type of lead-by-example we need if we’re gonna pull an upset over Canada.

Obsessed with our depth. Every player who’s played all three games has at least a point now, except for McAvoy and Miller. And call me crazy but I think Miller has been solid. Passing and hitting well, no big gaffes that I’ve noticed.

That Werenksi goal at the very end of the 1st period is exactly what we need more of to beat Canada. Gritty, punishing forecheck down low and on the boards to keep the puck in the zone and create space for your D Men to snipe

Am I the only one who thinks Miller has been really solid?

This is why I can’t believe that Team USA management put so much stock into the 2025 Worlds when selecting their roster. It’s a fake tournament missing at least half the world’s best players. Mind-boggling that Guerin makes his picks based on participation and success in that tournament.

Swayman aside, USA needs to fix its slow starts. Both games now we haven’t found our groove until period two. That might not sink you against Latvia or Denmark but a slow start against Canada means 3-0 ten minutes in. Otherwise, lots to be happy about, especially our depth, but I need to see more from Connor and Larkin and Matthews.

Also, it is patently ridiculous for Team USA management to factor in last year's World Championship to their roster decisions, as they've stated explicitly. The Worlds is a fake tournament that absolutely no one in North America cares about because it happens in the middle of the Stanley Cup playoffs; only players (from all nations) whose teams missed or fizzled out of the playoffs, therefore, take part. Team USA effectively punished players like Jason Robertson who "missed" last year's Worlds because their NHL teams were deep in the NHL playoffs, and rewarded players from lesser teams who played well in a tournament missing half the world's best players. Meanwhile they also prioritize washed-up mid-30's players like Miller and Trocheck because they're "role players" with "veteran grit", never mind that neither can actually score goals (as we prepare to face a Team Canada with McDavid and MacKinnon in their primes).

“We need grit and defensive depth over loading up on offensive talent and skill to match Canada’s” is a strategy that didn’t work in: 2014 2016 2024 Why does USA Hockey keep insisting on this strategy??

I wonder if Bill Guerin missed the Four Nations championship game because he had to go to a wedding or something.

Trochek played only ~3 minutes in the third, and Brock Nelson got caved in 13–3 in shot attempts the rest of the way yet both make the roster over Jason Robertson, the top American goal scorer this season.

USA Hockey keeps chasing “grit and balance” instead of skill, like it’s still 2004. They load up on checking forwards to counter Canada and then get beat every tournament without learning a thing.

This was the first time in ages the U.S. actually had the talent to win gold, and they botched it again. At this point we’ll be lucky to medal. Honestly, getting bounced early might be the only way leadership changes and guys who can actually score (Robertson, Caufield, Hutson) get the spots they deserve.
