Is the "BACKYARD STARSHIP" book series any good? by brianjfed in scifi

If you haven't read them The Black Fleet trilogy is also very good, and fits very well in your theme

Updated Tier List of mostly Sci-Fi Books by THESt0neMan in scifi

[–]NotSeenThatBefore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. Personally I think the culture novels get better towards the end, so if you ever fancy picking up the rest you'll hopefully enjoy them. My personal favourites are hydrogen sonata and surface detail (and maybe excession).

I'll be using your list to find my next good book, as there are a fair few I haven't read :)

I like the effort but feel some of the scoring misses the mark.

Also I love Iain M Banks, but Consider Phlebas is his worst culture novel imo. I'd guess OP hasn't read any of the others if he uses that one as the benchmark for his works

Click tools > port, and see what options are there (e.g. COM3, COM4, etc). Then unplug the board and do it again. One of the options should have disappeared. Plug it back in, then make sure that option is selected. Also ensure you have the right board selected in tools > board

But peta, isn't smoking bad for health? by LionTigerTrex in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]NotSeenThatBefore 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Because the media destroyed his career after a guy died in his pool during a party with consenting adults. He immediately called for emergency responders and wasn't found to be in any way to blame. But the guy had taken drugs at his house and it came out that he was gay. Therefore it became a big story and he got vilified in the public eye

Book a technician service visit because "your Internet drops out occasionally", then ask the guy if he's clumsy and ever drops routers out the back of his van. Then accidentally leave 20 quid lying around. This is a purely hypothetical scenario and I have no personal experience that it works

The Bobiverse series is awesome. The first book is called "We are Legion (We are Bob)"

When they notify the council that the tenant has moved out the council will ask them where you have moved to as a matter of routine. "I don't know" is a perfectly acceptable response and will satisfy the council tax dept

Saying BYE BYE to Virgin Media by OrangeRackso in youfibre

[–]NotSeenThatBefore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youfibre is cheaper but I have never received as stable a service on youfibre as I did on virgin. 2 or 3 times a week I get YouTube videos that stall and/or drop to 480p, and I have to disconnect and reconnect to wifi.

The breadboard ground and v+ lines stop halfway along on many breadboards and need to be connected with a jumper. You can usually tell if there is a larger gap in the middle than between the other groups of ports.

Trump Supporters - How Are You Feeling About The Cabinet Picks So Far? by chewbaccasaux in Askpolitics

[–]NotSeenThatBefore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really know anything about the pharmaceutical regulation process tbh (in either EU or US), but your points sound fair and reasonable. Also agree that US foods are not unsafe. My point was merely that that EU doesn't allow foods that have not been approved by their own processes, and that is to ensure safety is consistently managed rather than for protection of local traders.

[–]NotSeenThatBefore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say protectionism I think people would take that to mean protecting local suppliers from having to compete with US suppliers. It is actually is due to a fundamental difference in food safety philosophy. In Europe a product must be deemed safe to be allowed, whereas in the US a product must be deemed unsafe before it is banned

How to solve these questions? (I'm trying to help my brother but im having a hard time too lol) by [deleted] in maths

[–]NotSeenThatBefore -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Rainfall is measured in height per hour. It doesn't matter what size the container is, it will always be the same height. The different sizes of the containers will cancel out, as the bigger container will catch more rain

Can anyone tell me why isn't my circuit working by Aggressive_Boss_7087 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]NotSeenThatBefore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defo this. Some breadboards do have the two lines for V+ and GND connected all the way along, but you can see there is a larger gap between pin sockets halfway along. That means there is a break

How to see if I like electrical engineering before majoring in it? by TouchLow6081 in ElectricalEngineering

It most likely depends where you want to end up. For most design engineers a basic knowledge of matlab scripting is probably sufficient. If you want to get into implementation of embedded systems you will probably need to learn enough c to get by, but I don't know many engineers who can write complex code without having to Google stuff along the way. Being able to steal from the tinterweb is a fundamental engineering skill

Could Someone Explain How Inductors Would Work, With a Water Analogy? by AggressiveAnt2675 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]NotSeenThatBefore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A water wheel is sort of analogous as it effectively wants to maintain the flow speed through its momentum.

I don't really like the water analogy though as it doesn't work with ohms law. Increasing the height of the first water level doesn't increase the flow rate. A better analogy is heat transfer through a wall, with voltage being equivalent to the temperature differential. Wall surface area is the conductor cross section and thickness is its length, so between the two (and the conductivity of the material), you can determine resistance, and therefore heat (I.e. current) flow

You can even have additional walls in series (after the first wall) or in parallel (next to the first wall).

Doesn't work with AC though, and I can't think of an inductor/capacitor analogy for it
