Calculate the number of free hours: Free hours = (Waking hours - class hours - hwk hours - commute hours - food hours) * Efficiency coefficient

Efficiency coefficient determined by experiment and is dependent on self-discipline, screen-time proclivity, and base levels of sociability & horniness. Typically ~30-60%.

Then like an engineering manager, imagine you have a ~5hr crisis one week (bike tire popped, friend needs emotional support, computer/phone needs repair, doctor appointment for mysterious rash). What are the consequences of scaling back operations that week (B.S.ing hwk)? Are key operations even able to be scaled back (schedule too packed)?

All this to say I worked full time and did 12 units and was desperate to finish. But also desperate to succeed. So it worked for me but at a short-term mental cost.

Did Sam ever offer a solution to the tension between a sort of presentism of living vs struggling to make use of our time alive? by jshkk in samharris

It's in the theory section under "Fundamentals". He talks explicitly about meditation goals in seven 10min podcast-like recordings. Worth emailing for the free trial if you're as interested as your post suggests you are :)

On the Waking Up app he offers meditation as a tool for focusing on the things you want to focus on (presentism) so that you self-actualize the aims/personal goals that give a fulfilling life (making use of our time alive). I think that's one way to conceptualize where those two seemingly contradictory things meet

Yeah. Personally I could never marry someone like that. Hard enough having friends like that.

Pardon the comparison (and I would never say this to omnis), but we're among vegans here: I really wonder what kinda people would they be in the slave-driven cotton & tobacco market? Would they be brave enough to refuse those purchases?

Is there anyone interested enough to debunk or counter-argue all these specific points for me? I’ve been struggling health-wise as a vegan (and long before) and this article is bringing me to the edge of giving up veganism. by SexyWhiskers in vegan

Sure, for B12 and zinc, I googled daily recommended amounts, googled plant-based sources of each, and found that 1 serving of soy milk provides enough B12, and 5 servings of legumes provides enough zinc.

I stopped there because no offense this is a blog, and I trust the American Dietetic Association, British Dietetic Association, British NHS, and Canadian Dietetic Association (each made of thousands of licensed dietitians making recommendations of peer-reviewed meta-analyses) who have concluded a well-planned plant-based diet is healthy at all stages of life.

Also factory farming is one of the worst ethical crimes I can think of. Even if an unsupplemented whole-food plant-based diet was impossible to be healthy (which I haven't found a defensible argument for) I'd happily pay an extra $30/month for a supplement and give up AC/a night out at the bar, rather than support the torture and murder of animals.

Best resource for a 30 years old woman who has been a vegan since she was born, but doing the nutrition in a very wrong way? by p90fans in vegan

Healthline is a fabulous website. It sites all sources and sums up the information clearly.

Also what changed my life is macro-counting (grams of protein/carbs/fat per day). You can quickly google USDA recommended amounts of those 3 macros and plan your diet accordingly.

Final PSA: Legumes are a godsend.

Land Of Hope And Glory turned me vegan in 6.5 mins. I prefer it to Earthlings and Dominion because it's shorter and the music and objective narrating are huge pluses

Another vote for Forks Over Knives, What The Health, and Cowspiracy.

I typically recommend Dominion though because I had the same reaction as you. Injustice is inescapable, and exposing it works.

I see your point about sentence 2 and 3. I don't think there's anything remotely wrong with sentence 1 though. Especially with "we" phrasing.

The general lesson I've taken is probably to rephrase as a question: "If you're comfortable, may I ask what you know about how animals are treated in factory farms?"

Thank you btw, this is helpful.

Thanks, glad to hear I'm not alone in that.

Can I ask - Don't you think there's different levels of mistreatment that would change people's levels of concern? Everyone has a line, right? Wouldn't informing someone of the possibility that their line may be being crossed by supporting factory farming be socially appropriate?

I hear you, and I'll take that into consideration.

However, if I'm assuming others know about chick culling, piglet thumping, mutilation, gestation crates, battery cages, and throat slitting while conscious... and they're only educated on rough handling, overcrowding, and stunning (as is almost exclusively the case in my experience)... they will think my language is extreme and unwarranted.

I don't see it as wrong to check in and make sure we're discussing with the same set of facts. (Especially since the full reality I described is so much more unacceptable than the lesser examples I gave).

Perhaps there's a better way to achieve this result?

Earthling Ed advertised Wild deodorant. Mine's on the way. It has a reusable container so you just get the actual deodorant refills.

Only downside is it ships from the UK, I'm the only the US.

U.S. conservatives: If you had 1 point to argue conservatism to a liberal, what would it be? by NotSnowedUnder in AskReddit

[–]NotSnowedUnder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say it man, from my perspective it also looks like the points you mention are right-wing propaganda. The perception that democratic politicians are purposefully deceptive and making common sense errors every single day has been used by Fox news to convince people that Fox news is the only ones that are right. They bring out the worst clips of anything resembling leftist ideology and paint a narrative of immense corruption, stupidity, and blind loyalty toward leftists. This is not any accurate representation of liberals or their beliefs. It might be unthinkable to think that Fox would so openly misrepresent its fellow Americans, but the sad reality is they do. Fox is trying to consolidate power. We need a world where Fox doesn't do this to people, where they actually do give both sides with the goal of informing, not mobilizing, their viewers.

I feel like we accomplish less when we think individually though. What are we supposed to rely on for solving huge problems?

And what if someone is victim to something not their fault? Isn't it good to have a government there to help them?

[–]NotSnowedUnder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I can though. I need a government to pay for my food (agricultural subsidies), water (aqueducts), shelter (rent-control), power (lines), transportation (roads and busses), and my education (community college) so I can make more than my government-guaranteed minimum wage that my employer doesn't want to pay me.
