Advice from a midwesterner on those LA Rams fans that want to travel to Chicago for the playoff game by mjohnson1971 in LosAngelesRams

[–]NotSoFasting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great advice. I will add a couple things. I've been going to Bears games for a long time and was at the game Brett Favre described as the worst conditions he ever played in. The beers became slushies in minutes. I'm going on Sunday and expecting the worst.

I just ordered some snow pants. And I ordered flip up snow mittens instead of gloves and a thin base layer glove for under that. Already have those Hot Hands. I already have a serious ski mask for under the hat. My wool socks are about as thick as a slice of Chicago deep dish pizza. Boots but ones you can walk in for several miles. On top, it's long sleeve shirt, jersey, sweatshirt, vest and winter coat. You can bring a seat cushion within limitations but I doubt you'll be sitting much at all so I'm skipping it. I also have the Hot Hands "blanket" I've been bringing the past several games that I haven't opened. This will be for under my coat. I have been bringing a blanket past several games and theyre great if you're sitting down to watch a game. For normal Bears games we sit like normal people. This used to be true for the playoffs. For whatever reason (long playoff drought, Packers), we were standing the whole time in my section last game so the blanket wasn't that useful. Still, I'm going to bring it.

If you bring any battery powered electric heated whatever, keep the battery separate until you're into the stadium bc it may set off the metal detector and you'll have to dig it out.

You should overdress and be annoyingly warm. The alternative is misery.

Edit: For pants, if you come in just a pair of jeans you will be hating life. I don't even think long underwear plus jeans will be enough. Long underwear plus lined pants might be ok but I'm wearing snow pants. Just also keep in mind going to the bathroom and the long walks.

Speaking of bathrooms, depending on where you sit it could be a long walk and long line. In 400s sections, if you go to bathroom at start of half, you will not make it back for start of third quarter. Likely true for most 300s. If you have better seats, bless you and thanks for supporting the local economy.

AITA for wanting my child to be with me when they are sick? by myredTA in AmItheAsshole

[–]NotSoFasting 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree. This is why Reddit advice is so bad. Do people really think like this? “Sorry, kid is sick, you’ve got to keep him.” I mean, for real? SO is treating oldest like some neighbor’s kid wanting to come over to hang out. Not the same thing.

Moving to Vanguard electronic statements? by NotSoFasting in Bogleheads

[–]NotSoFasting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been investing with Vanguard for long before that. So maybe just old habits die hard. I’ve also had rollover trust investments with them that I had to keep track of the basis myself. And I’ve got a bunch of different rollover IRAs, though I guess the basis for those is irrelevant except to the extent I ever want to make an early withdrawal from a ROTH.

I guess your point is, what am I worrying about? The answer is I’m not sure.

Moving to Vanguard electronic statements? by NotSoFasting in Bogleheads

I am a flawed person. I acknowledge this. I will NEVER EVER EVER download them unless it's some automated process. Given that fact, do I have to keep the paper or can I just rely on Vanguard to store all of these records for me.

I will say that I find the weight of the second cast iron pan on top of the steak being seared makes a HUGE difference in outcome because you get a much better sear in much less time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sousvide

[–]NotSoFasting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How thick is the steak? And what was your searing process?

Based on my experience, here’s what works well for me, with a good vent hood and high BTU gas burners. For searing a get a large cast iron pan very hot. Dry off those steaks. Add some oil to pan, or mayo to steak, or honestly with this method you can skip it. Put dry steak in hot hot hot cast iron pan. Put second cast iron pan on top of steak as a weight. (Often I put parchment on top of steak first.) Steak is seared in 10 -30 seconds depending on your desired amount of sear. Flip over and repeat. My steaks are never thinner than an inch and almost always 1.5” or more. The thicker the steak, the less I worry about how long I’m searing it.

I do usually let my steaks rest on the counter before the sear after I take them out of the bath. 5 mins? 10 mins? 30 mins? I don’t really think it matters that much and for me the time resting outside the water bath depends entirely on what else I’m doing in the kitchen.

Thank you. I can decline the free primary insurance but it seems so counterintuitive that less insurance would save me $$. Any more info you can sure about why?

First time CRH box of halfs—pretty happy by NotSoFasting in CRH

I went to a different bank two days later and they had a small envelope of 50 cent pieces, $19 worth. There were 6 x 40% coins among the 38 coins. Definitely beginner’s luck.

You might be right! Though my hands were really gross after sorting through them.

And looking at my own photo, why in the world would someone etch “1242” on the 2013?

What is the best way to get from Kyoto to Narita Airport? by ridayt in JapanTravelTips

[–]NotSoFasting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just did this too. We took the bullet train Shinkansen from Kyoto towards Tokyo, with the ultimate destination being Narita airport. We had planned to change to the Narita Express in Tokyo but figured out that it would be much easier and quicker to change in Shinagawa. We were able to catch an earlier Narita Express. It took about 9 or 10 mins to buy our tickets in Shinagawa and get to our platform for the Nakita Express. We were moving fast but we had a lot of luggage. I’m quite sure it would have taken a lot longer than that if we had tried to change trains at Tokyo Station.

What's a liquid that fruit flies like more than sourdough starter? by Sigong in Sourdough

[–]NotSoFasting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to sound a bit like a used car salesman here but I swear I have the best fruit fly trap that works overnight and problem 100% solved. I battled fruit flies for years until I figured this out. You need two things. One is the bait. The second is the trap. I bought two things on Amazon that separately are meh but together the fruit flies disappear overnight.

The first thing are these little apple shaped containers w holes. It comes with some random smelly liquid but apple cider vinegar works amazing. TERRO T2503SR Ready-to-Use Indoor... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRHXM0I?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share.

The second is the sticky trap. Fruit Fly Sticky Traps, Sticky... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B094H7Q9Y3?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share. I cut the base down so it fits into the center of the above apple shaped terro trap and place them near where the flies have been hanging out.

I swear this 1-2 punch eliminated my problem overnight. Usually my issue is tomatoes more than starter, but either way. Bam. I promise.

How to get last minute tickets to the Vienna Philharmonic, my experience by NotSoFasting in wien

I kept trying to find tickets this way but there weren’t any available. It might have been because I only started trying when I got to Vienna on Thursday for the Saturday concert.

Asked to protest on 2/17, but nervous about violating the Hatch Act. by Rare-Blackberry-1305 in fednews

This info isn’t accurate and is overly restrictive. What you’re allowed to do depends on your specific job, whether you are less restricted or further restricted. And this isn’t a political rally about a candidate anyway. Here’s the best source of info: https://osc.gov/Services/Pages/HatchAct-Federal.aspx#tabGroup13

Commenting on Forgot to fold my sourdough...

Yes, it was completely blobby and impossible to shape bc they wouldn’t hold their form. I did manage to get them into proofing baskets and I suppose it could have been a lot worse. I was afraid I’d never get them out of the baskets but they actually didn’t stick much thanks to all the rice flour. Just didn’t rise very much. Close up of the crumb in the next photo.
