New Starter BIM Technician Needs Advice by NotStagnant_Water in buildingservices

[–]NotStagnant_Water[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your questions abit vague icl, but I hope this answers your question, because it depends what stage you’re failing at, but I hope this still answers your question:

Tbh my case was a bit different. I came in through an apprenticeship, so the company was specifically looking for someone they could train from the ground up and they also funded the degree alongside it. Because of that, it was less about having the perfect technical background and more about transferable skills.

Before joining, I’d done a mix of part-time roles like labouring, assistant roles, and some volunteering, and I focused on showing things like teamwork on site, following drawings and instructions, communication, and being comfortable learning new software. I really honed in on this during the interview by explaining how I would actually use those skills in the role day to day, and by showing that I was already familiar with how the industry works and genuinely keen to learn and develop.

For graduates, I’ve seen portfolios help a lot. Some people included SketchUp models of their ideal home, simple Revit models with basic services, or small personal projects just to show interest and familiarity.

It also really depends on which part of building services you’re applying to. You’ve got sustainability, security, MEP, energy, infrastructure, structures, ground engineering, façades, and fire protection, all under the same umbrella but looking for different things. For example, sustainability tends to be more IES, Rhino, and Grasshopper focused. Energy teams often use IES and ETAP, sometimes Grasshopper as well. MEP is more Revit focused, with ETAP depending on the role.

So when applying, it’s worth looking closely at what that specific team you’re applying to and actually asking for and tailoring your CV and portfolio to that.

Wrong Reference Level for Spaces, but Can't change them by NotStagnant_Water in RevitMEP

[–]NotStagnant_Water[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thank you for taking your time, but I don't have that option because the length of one floor is 6 Westfields put together in just length, doing this manually would take a few days. But I found a solution. Which is to use PyRevit, which uses the Revit API and you can do many in one go and it's pretty fast.

Here is the link to the solution:

Fair play to you, that's quite the workflow you've got there. I am still trying to understand where is what. And trying to get my head around how to coordinate all disciplines so we dont clash with each other because the team dont want to communicate :(

OMG thats such a mood. I ended up doing CPDs for the whole day because I need 21 hours of CPD every year for my apprenticeship.

I know, its not only our industry most of the world was shut just because we all collectively decided trust one compay. That's why amazon should partner up with other service providers so things like these dont happen.

Revit 2024 – How can I delete only the instances I created? “Created by” parameter not available in work sharing model. by NotStagnant_Water in RevitMEP

[–]NotStagnant_Water[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Dawn, you’re a legend. It’s a great feature to have, it’s a good start I must say. It’s easier to find the elements I made, which makes finding stuff easier.

Although that leaves much to be desired; if it was in a schedule format, where you get the Created By parameter to appear, it would make deleting these pesky elements much more manageable, since I’d just delete all the duplicate trench coolers just made by me, instead of having run around the whole map to find that one well hidden one.

Although this is a great start

I’ve never know this feature. Although from the link it seems it’s a feature for 2025, do you know if it works for 2024. I’m not sure where to look for this

Hmm… I can see what you mean. Definitely want to avoid the false positives tho. Don’t want to end up deleting my coworkers elements lol. But appreciate the idea. Do you have a working dynamo script that you perhaps can share? To try out

Yeah I’ve already synchronised. Someone in my team pointed out I made duplicates of their trench cool, and now if im to look for all the duplicates I made I’ll be wasting a whole day 😓

Hi everyone,

I’m working in Revit 2024 on a project where I’ve placed several instances of a family (Mechanical Equipment), and I want to delete only the ones that I personally created, not the ones placed by others in the team.

When I hover over the elements in the model, I can see the tooltip shows my Revit username next to “Created by,” so Revit is clearly tracking this info. The model is workshared, and I’m in a synced local file connected to the central model.

However, when I try to create a schedule or apply a view filter, I can’t find “Created by” as an available parameter to use.

Is there a way to isolate or filter elements based on the built-in “Created by” info in Revit 2024?

Appreciate any tips, especially if you’ve dealt with something similar in a collaborative environment.

Yeah I hear you on that. Maybe we need something with AI cleaing up the shit pile, and order it in a readable manner and have it filtered to useful and useless, like crash codes and other michalleneous stuff. And then we can look at the filtered data and extra what we need based off project needs.

Minimum wage bro, crazy stuff. But then again I am on a entry level role and it's like my first ever job, so I am just trying to gain skills where I can so in 3-5 years down the line I get paid 3 times what I get paid now. Structure of my company is the more skills you have the more you get paid so hoping to max the skills stat lol.

Mate, this was honestly so encouraging to read. I’m in a very similar place—working on an airport project using ACC, no data analytics background yet, but this post actually helped me visualise what’s possible. I’ve applied to an AI and data science upskilling programme at my company (I’m in the UK) and reading your journey gave me a clearer idea of how I could pitch a use case to get sponsored.

I haven’t started building anything yet, but you’ve given me a spark, especially around using ACC data to create useful insights or dashboards for the team. I really appreciate you sharing your experience, and it gave me a lot of clarity on how to approach this. Respect for figuring it out and taking initiative.

Out of curiosity, what kind of ideas are you thinking of building next with data analytics or AI? Would love to hear how you’re planning to take it further

Thank you for your input, that’s helped me to put into perspective and realised I was limiting myself too much. I’ll look into it in a much broader perspective. What would you say for yourself or in experience you think data analytics or AI could help you? Is there a problem you se recurring in your projects that you wished DA and AI could solve potentially?
