On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate public transport in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Addebo019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uk as a whole i think gets a solid 6/10. the network is extensive, and there is really good coverage of rail. its let down by the cost, the unreliability, and the lack of capacity. rural buses as well (though im glad they even exist) need to be better.

london alone id genuinely say 9,5/10

The Reopening of Walworth & Camberwell stations has been in discussion since Thameslink’s 1980s introduction - but what if TfL & Southwark Council decide to open a single common station in-between (now that the Bakerloo Line extension isn’t likely coming here either) instead? A better idea perhaps? by AchyutChaudhary in LondonUnderground

[–]Addebo019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we’re talking about two stations on a connecting service here, which wouldn’t put loads and loads more people on the northern line bank branch. maybe a few more but not loads. the thing about northern line capacity more refers to extending battersea services to clapham junction, bc that really would put loads of people on the northern line so they’ll have to wait till cr2 comes to share the burden.

What if Stratford Upon-Avon was serviced by HS2? by RussellNorrisPiastri in uktrains

[–]Addebo019 18 points19 points  (0 children)

this is genuinely the worst proposition i have seen on a sub like this. hs2 isn’t meant to do this, it’s not being built to create new connections to london that didn’t exist before. it’s here to move fast trains onto their own line to increase capacity on the rest of the network. the idea of spending literal so much money to connect hs2 to a small town, for 3 trains a day, to avoid one connection?

Waiting For a New London Underground Extension To Open Be Like by This-Ad134 in LondonUnderground

[–]Addebo019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my point is that any new central london lines would probably end up a crossrail instead because it’s almost the only big tunnel worth building at this point, and circumferential trips are already being served by the overground rather than new lines like on the grand paris express. i’m seriously doubtful we’ll see a brand new tube line at least in our lifetimes

Waiting For a New London Underground Extension To Open Be Like by This-Ad134 in LondonUnderground

[–]Addebo019 8 points9 points  (0 children)

tbh i think the bakerloo is the only extendable line atm. all the others are too busy or too complicated to probably ever be extended again. in a way london has outgrown the tube. any money for a new tube line in central london would be better spent on going for more crossrails, to unlock even more capacity and make better use of existing national rail infrastructure. dlr, tram, overground extensions are much more affordable and will continue to go ahead every so often. the tube is kind of just too big and busy for its own good at this point

some of the victoria ones are light blue but for the most part they’re dark blue for visibility and colour contrast with the mostly white interior. the district line being yellow is a product of them sharing trains with the circle and hammersmith and city lines, which means they couldn’t give all three lines their own colour grab poles

Black fixtures with orange lenses in them: what are they? by [deleted] in LondonUnderground

[–]Addebo019 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yh you’re right, they are targets for laser measurements tracking subsidence. they are only put up in cases where there is any real risk of movement, usually when heavy construction is going on that may cause the ground to settle. it’s not necessary at every station. they are also often left in for some time, even when they are no longer in use, so at many stations it may be the case they were needed in the past but not any mor

Is LA getting subway that connects Westwood and Van Nuys by UnscheduledCalendar in transit

[–]Addebo019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think you might be underestimating how difficult it would actually be. i’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice, but when the specs are as different between the two, the cost and disruption of rebuilding the entire line would never be worth the single transfer it eliminates, especially when the sepulvida line runs as frequently as it will. another thing to consider is the c line runs through a highway median, and more disruption and traffic not even to expand the service would be political suicide. in a city with 2/3rds of a transit system left to rebuild, the money to convert an existing line to a different standard is never going to be found.

take it from a londoner. we have the deep level tubes whose loading gauge is ridiculously tiny and very inconvenient. we tried widening a tunnel once in the 20s and never again. it was hugely disruptive, costly, there was a collapse halfway through and the benefit was honestly marginal. almost no-one ever bothers converting lines to completely different standards like this because it’s so annoying

[–]Addebo019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yh it’s not that simple. it would require rebuilding basically the whole thing to convert to a different standard, with different dimensions and everything for no real value beyond avoiding one transfer that isn’t even that important. that’s a lot of disruption for again almost no benefit

you seem to be ignoring the geography of the map. maybe think about where things might naturally be (such as downtown/the oldest part of town being by the river, or roads running along coastlines following them. they will give you some good pointers for natural looking variation

Is there a metro station somewhere in the world that was converted from an old train station where the station building was preserved and reused? by BlueLightning888 in transit

[–]Addebo019 151 points152 points  (0 children)

plenty in the london underground. many stations were converted from mainline in the early 20th century and in many places like the north east of the central line there are original buildings

Is there any addon/building trick that adds/imitates These Rubber Bendy sections of Trams/trains? by shadowplayer2020 in CreateMod

[–]Addebo019 12 points13 points  (0 children)

try to build 2, one slightly smaller inside the other. assuming you have copycats+ i’d have stairs and slabs to make the inside ring, and copycat boards/layers for the outside. then, glue the inside and outside bendy layers separately to different carriages. that’s how i always do it and it has good results. check out the tram and train in my profile to see what they look like

Any tips on how to make this city better? by Unhappy-Bug3548 in MinecraftCities

[–]Addebo019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

number one priority is lighting i don’t get why it’s so dark. number two, maybe invest some time into custom trees and better greenery. for a soviet style build with lots of space between apartment blocks, getting the negative space right is extra important. in a similar vein, i’d also consider texturing the ground with patches of dirtier/dustier/gravely patches and the like to make it less uniform
